[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1896091] Re: [i915] Noise-like lines of graphics corruption when moving windows in Xorg sessions

2020-12-29 Thread Sam Lane
I can also confirm that on 5.8.0-34 I am getting this bug still as well.
It *seems* to mostly start happening after resuming from suspend, but
its too random to say for sure.

[i915] Noise-like lines of graphics corruption when moving windows in
  Xorg sessions

  Triaged
Status in linux source package in Groovy:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
  == SRU Justification ==
  [Impact]
Noise-like lines of graphics corruption when moving windows in Xorg
  sessions.

  [Fix]
Revert "UBUNTU: SAUCE: drm/i915: Synchronize active and retire
  callbacks".

  [Test]
Daniel van Vugt confirmed reverting the commit fixes the issue.
I can also reproduce the issue on one of my system, I can confirm it
  fixes the issue too.

  [Where problems could occur]
Race condition the commit solves may appear again.
The commit was reverted and replaced by an upstream fix, which is already
included in 5.8. So it should be rather safe here.

  == Original Bug Report ==

I left my desktop (T480s thinkpad docked to ThinkVision P24h-10)
unattended for a while, and then got the error message and now have
funny lines on activity, e.g. red lines flashing on top of gnome-shell
bar when switching windows, or white blocks/lines around typing text.

This is the second or third time it happened, reboot fixes it until
  the error pops up again.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1896091] Re: [i915] Noise-like lines of graphics corruption when moving windows in Xorg sessions

2020-12-29 Thread Corey Huinker
This bug reoccurred just now for the first time since I installed the
patched kernel.

Am currently on

```
Linux floombort 5.8.0-34-generic #37-Ubuntu SMP Thu Dec 10 18:01:14 UTC 2020
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
```

And Alt+F2 then 'r' fixed it again.

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
On 18.04 and 19.10, the Dell Vostro 5391 would lose the trackpad
cursor control completely, manifesting as a frozen cursor. On 20.04,
it comes back from sleep as a regular mouse, but tracks motion
differently and doesn't recognize any normal gestures or the right-
click. Plugging a USB mouse in is a workaround, but having the
  trackpad:

DELL096F:00 27C6:01F0 Mouse: Applying InputClass "libinput pointer

work properly through sleep/wake cycles would be ideal.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1887190] Re: MSFT Touchpad not working on Lenovo Legion-5 15ARH05

2020-12-29 Thread Ethan Reker
I can also confirm #322 works on manjaro after installing Linux
5.10.rc5.d1122 through the "Manjaro Settings Manager". Thanks!

  Update (#296)

  The latest kernel tree
  (https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git)
has the complete solution to fix this bug. So we can expect kernel
v5.11 to fix this issue without any additional work. Before the
release of v5.11, you are suggested to use #189 to save your touchpad.

The complete solution is three patches,
   - 47a0001436352c9853d72bf2071e85b316d688a2 ("pinctrl: amd: remove debounce
filter setting in IRQ type setting")
   - 06abe8291bc31839950f7d0362d9979edc88a666 ("pinctrl: amd: fix incorrect way
to disable debounce filter")
   - 8dcb7a15a585b6d0fee15751ce11d7a68cfedd56 ("gpiolib: acpi: Take into
account debounce settings")

The first two patches has reached the stable tree. If the last one is
also backported to LTS kernel, you won't need to install kernel 5.11.
But I don't know when this will happen.

  Hello

The MSFT touchpad of this Lenovo Legion-5 15ARH05 laptop is not reacting at
all (pointer and click never move when touchpad is touched). This has been
reported by other users in various websites, with various linux systems
including other Ubuntu systems, but I saw no launchpad bug so I post one.
Example of websites covering the issue :

Re: [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1899882] Re: hdmi monitor on

2020-12-29 Thread John Dunlap
Hi Koba,

5.6.0-1036-oem is much more polite than any of the 5.10 candidates you have
provided. 5.6.0-1036-oem boots to the correct configuration and usually
recovers from suspend to the correct configuration. Even better, it
doesn't turn off the dock when suspending or recovering from suspend.

My current configuration is mirrored with both the external monitor at 60
Hz and the laptop screen at 120 Hz, both set to 1920x1080. I would rather
have the two screens be separate but the mirrored configuration seems to be
a bit more stable when recovering from suspend.

BTW, a number of months ago I updated my dock with
WD19FirmwareUpdateLinux_01.00.14.

Regards, John

Title:
Failure to write to NVMe disk soon after boot (APST-related)

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Hi all,
This one is similar to #1805816 and #1678184 (one was fixed, other closed).

  Symptoms:
During regular use, system starts failing after 10m - 1hr after start.
Icons start disappearing, writing to disk fails.
In-memory operations still work for a while (switching windows, streaming
video calls, typing).
After some time the entire system crashes, with a Black Screen Of Death
constantly looping:
  ---
  EXT4-fs error (device nvme0n1p5) ext4_find_entry:1455: inode #4594258:
comm gmain: reading directory lblock 0
[... same repeats for 8 times on average]
systemd-journald[439]: Failed to write entry (9 items, 270 bytes),
ignoring: Read-only file system
[... repeats for 10 times on average]
  ---

  Probable causes:
Updated both kernel and BIOS 2 days ago. Unable to determine, which one
caused the change.
Don't know how to determine which kernel and bios I was running before the
update.
Looks like APST issue, based on info from web and previous bug reports.

  Verification:
Created a rudimentary bash script, writing to a file in a loop,
incrementing timeout between two consecutive writes each time.
    Ran script using:
     - different nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us settings
   in GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash
nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=[0|200|5500]"
     - regular boot mode
     - logged in to account
     - on battery power
    With default_ps_max_latency_us NOT SET:
writing FAILS between 57 and 70 seconds timeout between writes
    With default_ps_max_latency_us=5500:
no write failure during 1hrs run
    With default_ps_max_latency_us=200:
no write failure during 30m run
    With latency 0:
no write failure during 10m run

  This suggests an APST issue.

  Machine:
    Lenovo Thinkpad T570
  Disk:
    SAMSUNG MZVLB512HAJQ-000L7
    512 GB (512110190592 bytes)

  System:
    OS 1: Ubuntu 18.04.5 LTS
  Kernel: 4.15.0-122-generic #124-Ubuntu SMP Thu Oct 15 13:03:05 UTC

OS 2: Windows 7 (on a separate partition on same disk, dualbooted with
grub).

  Actions taken:
Successfully checked the partitions for errors by running "Check partition"
and "Repair partition" in Disks utility in Ubuntu, running from a bootable USB.
Starting in "recovery mode" yields an error (among other suspicious
behavior):

sd 0:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg0 type 0
sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Attached SCSI removable Disk
    input: TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint as

No devices listed in conf file were found.
No devices listed in conf file were found.
   [repeats]

Without nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us set: writing fails between cca.
57 - 70, on battery.
    With nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=5500: FIXES THE PROBLEM.
    With nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=200: FIXES THE PROBLEM.
    With nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=0: FIXES THE PROBLEM.

  Previous behavior on same machine:
Same OS, with a previous Kernel has been running perfectly fine for the last
year, "on high revs" (it's a development machine).
   Often running on battery alone.
   sleep and wakeup without issues.
It is running Windows 7 (dual booted) without issues.

  Misc info:
To test different settings, did 'sudo nano /etc/default/grub' with each of
these settings:
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
    # GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash
nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=5500"
    # GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash
nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=200"
    # GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash
nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=0"
followed by 'sudo update-grub' and reboot.

Bug description:
  Update (#296)
  =

  The latest kernel tree
  (https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git)
has the complete solution to fix this bug. So we can expect kernel
v5.11 to fix this issue without any additional work. Before the
release of v5.11, you are suggested to use #189 to save your touchpad.

The complete solution is three patches,
   - 47a0001436352c9853d72bf2071e85b316d688a2 ("pinctrl: amd: remove debounce
filter setting in IRQ type setting")
   - 06abe8291bc31839950f7d0362d9979edc88a666 ("pinctrl: amd: fix incorrect way
to disable debounce filter")
   - 8dcb7a15a585b6d0fee15751ce11d7a68cfedd56 ("gpiolib: acpi: Take into
account debounce settings")

The first two patches has reached the stable tree. If the last one is
also backported to LTS kernel, you won't need to install kernel 5.11.
But I don't know when this will happen.

  Original bug report

  - https://askubuntu.com/questions/1253830/lenovo-legion-5-touchpad (exactly
the same laptop)
  - https://www.linux.org/threads/lenovo-legion-5-touchpad.29536/ (similar

Thanks a lot for your time. It does not help, but I can confirm what
was reported on askubuntu by another user : the touchpad does work on

Re: [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1899882] Re: hdmi monitor on

2020-12-29 Thread John Dunlap
changed /etc/default/grub and attached.
Also attached /var/log/dmesg

The external display does not turn on at boot but by requesting different
"Display" GUI settings the dock is rebooted (Ethernet connection is stopped
and started) and then sometimes the external display is started but usually
with incorrect settings such as wrong aspect ratios and mirrored instead of
separate.
Also, the mouse (not attached to the dock) becomes unresponsive for several
seconds at a time.

Title:
No rule to make target 'scripts/module.lds' while building out-of-tree

  Fix Released

Bug description:
  kernel v5.10-rc1 introduced a change ( 596b0474d3d9 "kbuild:
preprocess module linker script" ) that affects where and how
scripts/module.lds is used and causes external modules to fail to
build since that linker script is not shipped in the
  linux-{image,header} packages.

I've been testing the mainline PPA kernel v5.10-rc5 and today
installed v4l2loopback-dkms and hit this issue.

It will affect all DKMS packages. Ubuntu carries 39 DKMS packages.

  See the LKML discussion:

Title:
System hangs after attaching Mediatek mt76x2u based USB Wifi network
  adapter

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
After attaching a Mediatek mt76x2u based USB Wifi network adapter the
system (Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS linux version 5.4.0-58-generic) hangs

  My findings after some testing:
  - A freshly installed Ubuntu 20.04 (for testing purposes) with an outdated
kernel 5.4.0-26 is not affected as the USB Wifi network adapter works without
any problems.
  - After updating this system to kernel version 5.4.0-58 the problem can be
reproduced.
  - After upgrading to Ubuntu 20.10 with kernel version 5.8.0-33 the USB Wifi
network adapter works without any problems.
So I guess it could be a software problem (maybe linux-image oder
linux-modules?).

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1909499] Re: iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: No beacon heard and the time event is over already...

2020-12-29 Thread Lyubomir
So i left the PC on this morning and now i check - i still have this
error 3 times even with the oem kernel. I'm not sure if this is the
reason for yesterday's frequent disconnecting, but it is the only wifi
error with red error i saw, so it's worth fixing it before checking if
the issue persists.

Also, the internet doesn't seem stable, from time to time it

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1867559] Re: Qualcomm Atheros QCA9377 wifi 802.11ac very unstable and low speed

2020-12-29 Thread Sergey
I have Acer Aspire A315-42G with the same WiFi adapter and suffer from the same

sorry, don't have anything else to test on LAN), on Ubuntu 20.04 at the same
spot I get 30Mb/s download speed. My region settings:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1909499] Re: iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: No beacon heard and the time event is over already...

2020-12-29 Thread Lyubomir
Okay so i'm running with the linux-image-oem-20.04-edge kernel now.

Another thing i should mention is that here currently it is morning. in
KSystemLog i couldn't see the beacon error with the standard 5.4 kernel this
morning, only the entries from yesterday night. Then i installed this kernel
you mentioned and rebooted, now can't see even them, so no beacon errors.
Not sure that causes the issues, maybe at night there are more people around
with their routers, interference or whatever it is called and the signal might
be lower?? I'm not much into drivers and waves so... :-\

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1909499] Re: iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: No beacon heard and the time event is over already...

2020-12-29 Thread Lyubomir
Is it okay to have this error?
Error! Your kernel headers for kernel 5.10.0-1008-oem cannot be found.
Please install the linux-headers-5.10.0-1008-oem package

I also installed the recommended package above, but then got this error:
Error! Bad return status for module build on kernel: 5.10.0-1008-oem (x86_64)
Consult /var/lib/dkms/nvidia/450.80.02/build/make.log for more information.
   ...done.

So i purged all linux oem and reinstalled linux-image-oem-20.04-edge
only.

2020-12-29 Thread AaronMa
@mikelito, the patches are only landed in oem-1038 kernel for now, not

Please try oem-5.6-1038 or wait for a moment.

@John, if you're free, Would you please help to try drm-tip?
You cound just download the files with "generic" and
 linux_header_***_all.deb
 https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/drm-tip/2020-12-28/

And enable drm.debug=0x11e log_buf_len=16M in grub.

If the issue still exist, please upload the dmesg
