[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1938096] Re: [Lenovo X1 Carbon 9th] [SYNA8009:00 06CB:CE57] touchpad lagging after resume from suspend

2021-09-04 Thread Tim Richardson
I have this laptop. Bug happens on S3 suspend, much better on modern
standby (once it took two minutes or so for the touchpad to resume,
every other time it has worked).

Modern suspend does not use much battery. Mine slept for 8:20h last night and
the battery percentage declined from 96% to 94%.
my kernel is 5.13 and the session is Wayland gnome.

Title:
  [Lenovo X1 Carbon 9th] [SYNA8009:00 06CB:CE57] touchpad lagging after
  resume from suspend

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Hardware: Thinkpad X1 Carbon, 9th generation
  Touchpad: SYNA8009:00 06CB:CE57

Right after a clean reboot, the touchpad works fine. No issues
whatsoever. But after resuming from even its first suspend after a
clean boot, the touchpad feels less responsive, choppy or even laggy.

I have tried removing and re-inserting some HID kernel modules,
"psmouse", and setting i915.psr_enabled=0 in kernelstubs. Haven't
found anything that fixes it yet. The trackpoint works flawlessly all
the time, so that is the current backup when I don't have an external
  mouse connected.

My installed OS is Pop!_Os 21.04, but I have tested and confirmed this
on a live USB with Ubuntu 21.04 as well.

I have also tried upgrading to the latest 5.13.5 and 5.14.0rc2 kernels
from the mainline PPA, and tried bumping the libinput10 to 1.18.0 from
  the impish repos.

  To recreate:
  1. Reboot a X1C9 machine and see that the touchpad works fine
  2. Suspend it (to RAM, need to change a BiOS setting so it doesn't do a
software suspend)
  3. Resume from suspend and see that touchpad acts differently and less
responsive than right after a clean boot

  What is expected:
  1. Same responsive touchpad experience after resuming from suspend as right
after a clean boot.

2021-09-04 Thread Justin Myers
I have the same issue with an HP EliteBook 840 G5, using an Intel Core
i5-8250U (Intel UHD Graphics 620) and an AMD Radeon RX 540.

Under a clean Focal install (20.04.2), I can successfully boot and use
my machine under kernel 5.8.0-55, but I get the blank screen described
by other commenters under 5.8.0-59. `journalctl` and `inxi` output is
available here:
https://gist.github.com/myersjustinc/7a60811f846df88bab96b5207c4975f5

Under a clean Hirsute install (21.04), it similarly works under
5.11.0-18 and fails under 5.11.0-22. Corresponding output is available
here:
https://gist.github.com/myersjustinc/942f30176f65e774efd8d2f7886f4c53

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1942695] [NEW] DeskTop freezes for up to 5 seconds the first keystroke on Gnome terminal after boot.

2021-09-04 Thread Jose Netto
Public bug reported:

Hi Everyone,

Just after boot If I open gnome terminal the first keystroke (which one - arrow
up, letter, number, etc) freezes DeskTop for about 5 seconds. Only first
keystroke and only on first terminal section. If System Monitor is running
before, it freezes for this time and then shows 1 core at 100%.

This issue happens on my Raspberry PI 4 8Gb, my everyday Desktop.

I'm running Ubuntu 21.10, but same happens on Ubuntu 21.04 Ubuntu 20.10
and Ubuntu 20.04

Same issue happens on my Notebook Dell 5558 (intel I5 (5. gen)) running
Ubuntu 20.04 but it freezes for about 3 seconds.

You may think this a Debian legacy, but no, Raspberry PI OS does not
show this behaviour.

I think this is a Ubuntu legacy cause POP-OS 21.04 running on my
NoteBook has the same issue.

This config enables code that is disabled by default. However, there

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1835660] Re: initramfs unpacking failed

2021-09-04 Thread Ken Takusagawa
I've discovered that this behavior can also occur with the installer
(similar to bug 1900130) when the USB stick to which the installer ISO
was written is bad. (In this case, the error message is saying exactly
what it should be saying.)

Bug description:
"initramfs unpacking failed: Decoding failed", message appears on
  boot up.

If I "update-initramfs" using gzip instead of lz, then boot up passes
  without decoding failed message.

  ---

However, we currently believe that the decoding error reported in
dmesg is actually harmless and has no impact on usability on the
  system.

Switching from lz4 to gzip compression, simply papers over the
warning, without any benefits, and slows down boot.

Kernel should be fixed to correctly parse lz4 compressed initrds, or
at least lower the warning, to not be user visible as an error.

  [Impact]

   * Decoding failure messages in dmsg with a single lz4 initrd

   * Multiple lz4 compressed initrds cannot be decompressed by kernel,
  when loaded by grub

   * Multiple lz4 compressed initrds cannot be decompressed by kernel,
when there is padding between them

  [Test Case]

   * Create empty padding with $ dd if=/dev/zero of=pad4 bs=1 count=4

   * Create an lz4 compressed initrd with a single test-file in it with
some content. I.e. echo "second-initrd" > test-file, and then pack
that with cpio hewc owned by root & lz4 -l.

   * Create a combined padded initrd of stock initrd, pad4, and the
  test-marker initrd created above.

   * Boot above with "break=top" kernel command line.

   * With broken kernels, there should be dmesg error message that
decoding failed, and one will observe that /test-file does not exist
  in the shell.

   * With fixed kernel, /test-file in the initrd shell should exist, and
should have the expected content "second-initrd".

   * The alignment and padding in the above test case depends on the
size of the first initrd => if a given padded initrd does not
reproduce the problem, try varying the size of the first initrd or
that of the padding between 0..4.

  [Where problems could occur]

   * This changes compatible lz4 decompressor in the kernel, which can
also be used by other kernel modules such as cryptography, squashfs,
zram, f2fs, comprssed kernel image, pstore. For example, previously
rejected files with "bogus" length and extra padding may now be
accepted, whereas they were previously getting rejected by the
  decompressor.

   * Ideally kernel should switch to the stable lz4 format which has
better specification of end of stream.

Title:
mouse acceleration does not work on Logitech G402 Mouse

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
i am using Logitech G402 Gaming mouse.
ubuntu changes cursor speed faster when mouse speed fast, which is named as
"Mouse Acceleration". this is activated by default.
but somehow, this does not work with my G402 mouse. the cursor just moves
with no acceleration.
so i checked if my acceleration profile is incorrect with gnome-tweaks, and
it was set to 'default'. regardless how i change "Acceleration Profile", it
just moves without acceleration. weird thing is changing acceleration profile
between "Default"(Adaptive) and "Flat" does something. 'flat' gives much wider
range to mouse speed slider on system settings, fast is too fast, slow is too
slow.

i checked this with various version and distribution to confirm this is bug.
all version listed below is tested on USB live boot system with default
settings.
  affected version i checked:
  -Ubuntu 18.04 and variants
  -Ubuntu 19.04 and variants
  -Ubuntu 19.10 and variants
  -Ubuntu 20.04 and variants
-Ubuntu 20.10 latest release with package update and variants

  other affected distribution i checked:
  -Debian buster latest Gnome release
  -Debian buster latest LXQt release
  -Fedora workstation latest network install

as this bug affects wide range of linux distributions, i belive this is
x11-related or driver issue but i have no idea which one is the problem.

Title:
mouse acceleration does not work on Logitech G402 Mouse

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
i am using Logitech G402 Gaming mouse.
ubuntu changes cursor speed faster when mouse speed fast, which is named as
"Mouse Acceleration". this is activated by default.
but somehow, this does not work with my G402 mouse. the cursor just moves
with no acceleration.
so i checked if my acceleration profile is incorrect with gnome-tweaks, and
it was set to 'default'. regardless how i change "Acceleration Profile", it
just moves without acceleration. weird thing is changing acceleration profile
between "Default"(Adaptive) and "Flat" does something. 'flat' gives much wider
range to mouse speed slider on system settings, fast is too fast, slow is too
slow.

i checked this with various version and distribution to confirm this is bug.
all version listed below is tested on USB live boot system with default
settings.
  affected version i checked:
  -Ubuntu 18.04 and variants
  -Ubuntu 19.04 and variants
  -Ubuntu 19.10 and variants

  -Debian buster latest LXQt release
  -Fedora workstation latest network install

Title:
mouse acceleration does not work on Logitech G402 Mouse

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
i am using Logitech G402 Gaming mouse.
ubuntu changes cursor speed faster when mouse speed fast, which is named as
"Mouse Acceleration". this is activated by default.
but somehow, this does not work with my G402 mouse. the cursor just moves
with no acceleration.
so i checked if my acceleration profile is incorrect with gnome-tweaks, and
it was set to 'default'. regardless how i change "Acceleration Profile", it
just moves without acceleration. weird thing is changing acceleration profile
between "Default"(Adaptive) and "Flat" does something. 'flat' gives much wider
range to mouse speed slider on system settings, fast is too fast, slow is too
slow.

i checked this with various version and distribution to confirm this is bug.
all version listed below is tested on USB live boot system with default
settings.
  affected version i checked:
  -Ubuntu 18.04 and variants
  -Ubuntu 19.04 and variants
  -Ubuntu 19.10 and variants
  -Ubuntu 20.04 and variants
-Ubuntu 20.10 latest release with package update and variants

  other affected distribution i checked:
  -Debian buster latest Gnome release
  -Debian buster latest LXQt release
  -Fedora workstation latest network install

as this bug affects wide range of linux distributions, i belive this is
x11-related or driver issue but i have no idea which one is the problem.

Title:
mouse acceleration does not work on Logitech G402 Mouse

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
i am using Logitech G402 Gaming mouse.
ubuntu changes cursor speed faster when mouse speed fast, which is named as
"Mouse Acceleration". this is activated by default.
but somehow, this does not work with my G402 mouse. the cursor just moves
with no acceleration.
so i checked if my acceleration profile is incorrect with gnome-tweaks, and
it was set to 'default'. regardless how i change "Acceleration Profile", it
just moves without acceleration. weird thing is changing acceleration profile
between "Default"(Adaptive) and "Flat" does something. 'flat' gives much wider
range to mouse speed slider on system settings, fast is too fast, slow is too
slow.

i checked this with various version and distribution to confirm this is bug.
all version listed below is tested on USB live boot system with default
settings.
  affected version i checked:
  -Ubuntu 18.04 and variants
  -Ubuntu 19.04 and variants
  -Ubuntu 19.10 and variants
  -Ubuntu 20.04 and variants
-Ubuntu 20.10 latest release with package update and variants

  other affected distribution i checked:
  -Debian buster latest Gnome release
  -Debian buster latest LXQt release
  -Fedora workstation latest network install

as this bug affects wide range of linux distributions, i belive this is
x11-related or driver issue but i have no idea which one is the problem.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1913198] Re: mouse acceleration does not work on Logitech G402 Mouse

2021-09-04 Thread blue-on
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected groovy

** Description changed:

i am using Logitech G402 Gaming mouse.
ubuntu changes cursor speed faster when mouse speed fast, which is named as
"Mouse Acceleration". this is activated by default.
but somehow, this does not work with my G402 mouse. the cursor just moves
with no acceleration.
so i checked if my acceleration profile is incorrect with gnome-tweaks, and
it was set to 'default'. regardless how i change "Acceleration Profile", it
just moves without acceleration. weird thing is changing acceleration profile
between "Default"(Adaptive) and "Flat" does something. 'flat' gives much wider
range to mouse speed slider on system settings, fast is too fast, slow is too
slow.

i checked this with various version and distribution to confirm this is bug.
all version listed below is tested on USB live boot system with default
settings.
  affected version i checked:
  -Ubuntu 18.04 and variants
  -Ubuntu 19.04 and variants
  -Ubuntu 19.10 and variants
  -Ubuntu 20.04 and variants
-Ubuntu 20.10 latest release with package update and variants

  other affected distribution i checked:
  -Debian buster latest Gnome release
  -Debian buster latest LXQt release
  -Fedora workstation latest network install

- as this bug affects wide range of linux distributions, i belive this is
- x11-related or driver issue but i have no idea which one is the problem.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1938096] Re: [Lenovo X1 Carbon 9th] [SYNA8009:00 06CB:CE57] touchpad lagging after resume from suspend

2021-09-04 Thread Mark Pearson
Just to pick up on some of the above comments:

 - my understanding is this is a touchpad firmware bug so not much point
reporting it to other distro's as well - it's not a Canonical/Ubuntu
issue either IMO.

 - Using S0ix/modern suspend (or 'Windows and Linux') sleep mode setting
in the BIOS is the fix. If you see other problems around S0ix they
should be reported so we can fix those (you shouldn't see excessive
battery drain). That's the supported/tested/certified sleep mode on
these Tigerlake CPUs.

We are working with Synaptics on a S3 fix - but it's been lower priority
I'm afraid. I don't have an update or ETA yet.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1939205] Re: sound dummy output 21.04

2021-09-04 Thread Override
Hui Wang: when booting from https://iso.mirrors.ustc.edu.cn/ubuntu-
releases/21.04/ubuntu-21.04-desktop-amd64.iso, the livecd was able to
produce sound and detected a soundcard of type "HDMI/DisplayPort Audio
built-in"

However when i reboot into my installed system there is still no sound
with it..

what else can i do to fix this? is there a way to boot from live and somehow
"overwrite" just the faulty kernel/subsound system?

Title:
SMBv2+ does not show all files when mounting a windows share

Status in Linux:
  Unknown
Status in Release Notes for Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in linux package in Debian:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
When using the SMBv2 Protocol to mount a top level windows share (such
as C:\) not all files (or directories) are shown that exist on the
server side. Exactly 2 files are always missing...

  Steps to reproduce:
On a windows7 PC (or Server) e.g. C:\ must be published as Share (must be top
level share - a subfolder like C:\data\ seems to work)

  sudo mount -t cifs //SERVER/SHARE_NAME /mnt -o
  domain=DOMAIN_NAME,username=${USER},uid=1000,gid=1000,nounix,vers=2.0

As a result always 2 Files (or directories) are missing in the mounted
  directory of the ubuntu installation.

Seems to be a kernel bug (source tree: linux/fs/cifs).

  Ubuntu 14.04LTS amd64
  Ubuntu 15.10 amd64
