  [ASUS N550JK] After a system reboot, the audio seems muted until one
  raises the level above 50%

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Sometimes when I play a clip (be it a Video, song or a radiostation,
  it doesn't matter) and I have the volume lowered to 10% I can't hear
  any sound whatsoever. Not until I raise the volume with Fn + F12 (F12
  has a speaker icon on it to raise the volume).

  It's as if PulseAudio is muted until I raise the volume.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1981087] Re: thermald prematurely throttling GPU

2022-10-29 Thread sheldonwang
@Chris,
Could you advise what the next step we need to take is?
Koba already verified many old Intel systems (as described in #20).
Thanks.

Title:
  thermald prematurely throttling GPU

Status in thermald package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in thermald source package in Jammy:
  In Progress

Bug description:
  [Impact]
   * thermald prematurely throttling GPU

  [Test Plan]
  Test1,
   * Run game on the target machine.
   * the FPS must not be significantly reduced.
  Test2,
   * Run on others platform, ADL/TGL/CML/CFL/KBL.
   * Use monitoring tool(e.g. s-tui) and stress-ng to verify if the machine
runs normally.

  [Where problems could occur]
   * better support for Passive Policy. currently passive policy 1 is supported
and it should have a bug if the machine only enable pssive policy 2.

  ~~~
  I got a new game and started playing it
  It would run at over 100 FPS solidly some of the time and then cyclically dip
down to below 20 FPS for a few minutes
  I determined that it was thermald trying to keep my GPU below 70°C
  to determine this I sudo systemctl stop thermald
  The game ran solidly and consistently with the GPU at 75°C
  This is well below the specs set by the manufacturer and perhaps
  unreasonably low for a laptop
  But more importantly I was given no indication this was happening. I
  had to sleuth it out myself.
  Perhaps it is impossible to determine good defaults for all hardware,
  I don't know. However without an indication that this is happening
  there will be a lot of people with a mysteriously broken experience.
  This was extremely difficult for me to find and I had several friend
  who are experts on linux gaming and video drivers trying to track this
  down. I discovered it by luck and perseverance.
  This absolutely needs some sort of indication and hopefully a way to
  remedy it from the GUI. ideally it would set thermal limits that are
  more in line with what the device is designed for and not a
  conservative default if at all possible.
[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1995171] Re: Thinkpad P14s A 2nd Generation: No boot with Kernel > 5.15.0-48
2022-10-29 Thread Felix Bartels
The following messages appear visible during boot:
[0.437530] ACPI BIOS Error (bug): Could not resolve symbol
[\_SB.PCI0.LPC0.EC0.AC._PSR.AFN4], AE_NOT_FOUND (20210730/psargs-330)
[0.437547] No Arguments are initialized for method [_PSR]
[0.437548] ACPI Error: Aborting method \_SB.PCI0.LPC0.EC0.AC._PSR
due to previous error (AE_NOT_FOUND) (20210730/psparse-529)
When booting the kernel 5.15.0-48, the messages just appear. When
booting a newer kernel, these messages still can be seen but nothing
happens afterwards.
Title:
  Thinkpad P14s A 2nd Generation: No boot with Kernel > 5.15.0-48
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Bug description:
  Hello,
  I use Kubuntu 22.04 LTS on my Lenovo P14s (21A0-GE). After updating the
Kernel to a version above 5.15.0-48, the system didn't start. I therefore used
the old one (Version 5.15.0-48) from the recovery menu - the machine boots
again.
  I believe that this information is not enough to assess the problem. I
  see some error messages even when the machine boots correctly. Could
  anyone please tell me what I should try out or read out to get more
  information?
  Many thanks,
  Felix
Title:
  Thinkpad P14s A 2nd Generation: No boot with Kernel > 5.15.0-48
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Bug description:
  Hello,
  I use Kubuntu 22.04 LTS on my Lenovo P14s (21A0-GE). After updating the
Kernel to a version above 5.15.0-48, the system didn't start. I therefore used
the old one (Version 5.15.0-48) from the recovery menu - the machine boots
again.
  I believe that this information is not enough to assess the problem. I
  see some error messages even when the machine boots correctly. Could
  anyone please tell me what I should try out or read out to get more
  information?
  Many thanks,
  Felix
Title:
  Thinkpad P14s A 2nd Generation: No boot with Kernel > 5.15.0-48
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Bug description:
  Hello,
  I use Kubuntu 22.04 LTS on my Lenovo P14s (21A0-GE). After updating the
Kernel to a version above 5.15.0-48, the system didn't start. I therefore used
the old one (Version 5.15.0-48) from the recovery menu - the machine boots
again.
  I believe that this information is not enough to assess the problem. I
  see some error messages even when the machine boots correctly. Could
  anyone please tell me what I should try out or read out to get more
  information?
  Many thanks,
  Felix
[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1995171] Re: Thinkpad P14s A 2nd Generation: No boot with Kernel > 5.15.0-48
2022-10-29 Thread Felix Bartels
apport information
** Tags added: apport-collected
** Description changed:
  Hello,
  I use Kubuntu 22.04 LTS on my Lenovo P14s (21A0-GE). After updating the
Kernel to a version above 5.15.0-48, the system didn't start. I therefore used
the old one (Version 5.15.0-48) from the recovery menu - the machine boots
again.
  I believe that this information is not enough to assess the problem. I
  see some error messages even when the machine boots correctly. Could
  anyone please tell me what I should try out or read out to get more
  information?
  Many thanks,
- Felix
  3. Switch to another user.
  The original user's ~/.xsession-errors will rapidly fill up with
  errors along the lines of "vdpau_chroma filter error".
  At the same time, errors are put in /var/log/syslog as well:
  [7f9d604810a0] vdpau_chroma filter error: video mixer rendering failure:
  (repeat ad nauseum)
  At least one of the two will rapidly fill up its partition and
  problems will arise.
  With AMD video hardware and driver, the video continues playing - you
  can hear the sound despite being in the other user.
Bug description:
  [Impact]
  The Nvidia driver corrupts and/or forgets its textures when resuming
  from suspend, by design. Documented here:
https://www.khronos.org/registry/OpenGL/extensions/NV/NV_robustness_video_memory_purge.txt
  Although it's so awkward to implement everywhere that realistically
  compositors will never support it fully. Instead we're waiting for an
  Nvidia driver fix.
  *NOTE* that this is actually not a common problem because the system
  must be using Nvidia as the primary GPU to be affected. So generally
  only desktop users will encounter the bug, not laptops. And even then,
  only desktops that use suspend/resume and VT switching may trigger it,
  if ever. Even in development the bug cannot be reproduced reliably.
  [Workarounds]
  * Always log into a Xorg session and if corruption occurs then type:
  Alt+F2, R, Enter
  *
  [Where problems could occur]
  [Original Bug Report]
  I recently installed ubuntu 20.04 on my computer, and I am running
  into an issue when I do the following:
  * Login with a user on desktop
  * Select switch user, and login as second user
  * Switch user again, and return to original user
  At this point, text and icons in the menubar / sidebar are corrupted.
  Text and icons in normal windows appear correctly. I have attached a
  screenshot of what this looks like.
2022-10-29 Thread thedoctar
I also have this message. I use a Dell XPS 9360 with Lubuntu 22.04. Here
is my dmesg (note that I don't get any acpi warnings afterwards):
Title:
  found
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Bug description:
  I run the kernel 5.4.0-42-generic on a fully up-to-date Ubuntu "focal" on
Dell Latitude E6440.
  While scrolling through the output of `journalctl -b` I came across a warning
(marked yellow):
  [0.659825] wmi_bus wmi_bus-PNP0C14:00: WQBC data block query
  control method not found
  Now, since this is a warning, I get, ergo, warned.  What is it that I
  get warned about?  Is it just a printf or is some action required?  As
  every computer, the laptop suffers from various problems from time to
  time (e.g., boot or wakeup silently hangs up while the manufacturer
  splash screen is displayed), so, I don't know whether this message
  could be related to any of such problems.
  Here is the context of this warning in dmesg:
  # dmesg | grep -B 10 -A 5 "method not found"
  This is probably to do with composite unredirecting... In compiz we
  have a workaround to avoid this tearing by disallowing unredirect
  ("bypass") in known problematic video players. But I'm not sure if
  mutter has such a workaround/whitelist/blacklist we can use.
  It has some problem when user connect to external 4K monitor with refresh
Bug description:
  On 18.04 I could send files from my phone to my laptop at any time.
  On 20.04 I can't get files to be accepted by the laptop over bluetooth. After
much frustration and experimenting, I figured out that it will work, but only
if the bluetooth settings dialog is open. If the settings dialog is not open,
the incoming file is rejected.  If the dialog is closed after the file transfer
begins, the transfer continues but the file is discarded when the transfer is
complete.  This is very frustrating.
  I need to be able to send files (mostly photos and videos) from my phone to
my laptop without having to open the settings dialog on the laptop, just like I
could before upgrading.
