[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2009136] Re: No HDMI audio under 5.19.0-35 & -37 (regression from -32)

Title:
  No HDMI audio under 5.19.0-35 & -37 (regression from -32)

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in linux source package in Jammy:
  Invalid
Status in linux source package in Kinetic:
  In Progress

Bug description:
  [Impact]
  For amdgpu/i915, hdmi audio output device has disappeared.

  [Fix]
  The latest fix for the non-contiguous memalloc helper changed the
  allocation method for a non-IOMMU system to use only the fallback
  allocator. This should have worked, but it caused a problem sometimes
  when too many non-contiguous pages are allocated that can't be treated
  by HD-audio controller.

  As a quirk workaround, go back to the original strategy: use
  dma_alloc_noncontiguous() at first, and apply the fallback only when
  it fails, but only for non-IOMMU case

  [Test Case]
  1. boot with kernel applied the patches.
  2. check the cards in /proc/asound/cards.
 Get the hdmi cards.

   0 [PCH ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel PCH
HDA Intel PCH at 0xe232 irq 137
   1 [HDMI ]: HDA-Intel - HDA ATI HDMI
HDA ATI HDMI at 0xe226 irq 134

  [Where problems could occur]
  Low, this is just workaround and may have a better solution in the future.

  [Misc]
  All patches has been landed on OEM-6.1 and lunar.

  ~~
  CLARIFICATION: Just to avoid any confusion for those coming to this bug
report; the "Jammy: invalid" status above does *not* mean that this bug doesn't
affect jammy -- it does, and the kernel team is aware of this. All it reflects
is that the fix has to go into the kinetic kernel package which will then flow
into the kernel-hwe package implicitly.

  Currently known affected cards:

  * HD 7700 (comment 8)
  * R9 290 (comment 21)
  * RX 550 (LP: #2012141, and comment 27)
  * RX 570 (mine)
  * RX 580 (LP: #2009276, and comment 28)
  * WX 3200 (comment 29)
  * RX 6600 (LP: #2009542)
  * RX 6700 (LP: #2009275)

  [ Original Description ]

  After upgrading my Ubuntu jammy (22.04) desktop to the -35 release of
  the kernel, I found my HDMI audio output device had disappeared.
  Reverting to the -32 release caused it to appear again (hence why I'm
  filing the bug against the kernel rather than pulseaudio). I'm
  attaching the dmesg output from immediately after booting each kernel,
  but after a bit of trimming and diffing I *think* the following lines
  are the salient ones:

  input: HDA ATI HDMI HDMI/DP,pcm=3 as
/devices/pci:00/:00:03.1/:2b:00.1/sound/card0/input12
  input: HDA ATI HDMI HDMI/DP,pcm=7 as
/devices/pci:00/:00:03.1/:2b:00.1/sound/card0/input13
  input: HDA ATI HDMI HDMI/DP,pcm=8 as
/devices/pci:00/:00:03.1/:2b:00.1/sound/card0/input14
  input: HDA ATI HDMI HDMI/DP,pcm=9 as
/devices/pci:00/:00:03.1/:2b:00.1/sound/card0/input15
  input: HDA ATI HDMI HDMI/DP,pcm=10 as
/devices/pci:00/:00:03.1/:2b:00.1/sound/card0/input16
  input: HDA ATI HDMI HDMI/DP,pcm=11 as
/devices/pci:00/:00:03.1/:2b:00.1/sound/card0/input17
  snd_hda_intel :2b:00.1: bound :2b:00.0 (ops
amdgpu_dm_audio_component_bind_ops [amdgpu])

  These lines appear in the dmesg of the -32 kernel, but not in the -35
  kernel's log. Meanwhile, the following lines appear in the -35
  kernel's log but not in the -32:

  hdaudio hdaudioC0D0: no AFG or MFG node found
  snd_hda_intel :2b:00.1: no codecs initialized

  I'll also attach the output of "pactl list" under each kernel (this
  shows the HDMI audio sink showing up under -32, but not -35) just in
  case that helps shed any light on things.

Title:
  No HDMI audio anymore

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  lsb_release -rd
  Description:  Ubuntu 22.10
  Release:  22.10

  Wayland

  5.19.0-35-generic does not work
  5.19.0-32-generic does work

  If following messages occures during boot, no HDMI audio :
  hdaudio hdaudioC1D0: no AFG or MFG node found
  snd_hda_intel :01:00.1: no codecs initialized

  No HDMI Audio does mean :
  Via lspci -nnk I get the following device :

  01:00.1 Audio device [0403]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Baffin
HDMI/DP Audio [Radeon RX 550 640SP / RX 560/560X] [1002:aae0]
Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. Baffin HDMI/DP Audio [Radeon RX 550
640SP / RX 560/560X] [1043:aae0]
Kernel driver in use: snd_hda_intel
Kernel modules: snd_hda_intel

  But this device will neither be indicated via pavucontrol nor via
  audio settings (mainsettings).

  Before I did installed the Ubuntu 22.10 on my system, I did test the
  live system. It did work without problems. And two audio devices, that
  is what I expect, will be indicated in the audio settings (one of
  them, the given above via lspci -nnk, is necessary to have audio via
  HDMI)

  * HD 7700 (comment 8)
  * R9 290 (comment 21)
  * RX 550 (LP: #2012141, and comment 27)
  * RX 570 (mine)
  * RX 580 (LP: #2009276, and comment 28)
  * WX 3200 (comment 29)
  * RX 6600 (LP: #2009542)
  * RX 6700 (LP: #2009275)

  [ Original Description ]

  After upgrading my Ubuntu jammy (22.04) desktop to the -35 release of
  the kernel, I found my HDMI audio output device had disappeared.
  Reverting to the -32 release caused it to appear again (hence why I'm
  filing the bug against the kernel rather than pulseaudio). I'm
  attaching the dmesg output from immediately after booting each kernel,
  but after a bit of trimming and diffing I *think* the following lines
  are the salient ones:

  input: HDA ATI HDMI HDMI/DP,pcm=3 as
/devices/pci:00/:00:03.1/:2b:00.1/sound/card0/input12
  input: HDA ATI HDMI HDMI/DP,pcm=7 as
/devices/pci:00/:00:03.1/:2b:00.1/sound/card0/input13
  input: HDA ATI HDMI HDMI/DP,pcm=8 as
/devices/pci:00/:00:03.1/:2b:00.1/sound/card0/input14
  input: HDA ATI HDMI HDMI/DP,pcm=9 as
/devices/pci:00/:00:03.1/:2b:00.1/sound/card0/input15
  input: HDA ATI HDMI HDMI/DP,pcm=10 as
/devices/pci:00/:00:03.1/:2b:00.1/sound/card0/input16
  input: HDA ATI HDMI HDMI/DP,pcm=11 as
/devices/pci:00/:00:03.1/:2b:00.1/sound/card0/input17
  snd_hda_intel :2b:00.1: bound :2b:00.0 (ops
amdgpu_dm_audio_component_bind_ops [amdgpu])

  These lines appear in the dmesg of the -32 kernel, but not in the -35
  kernel's log. Meanwhile, the following lines appear in the -35
  kernel's log but not in the -32:

  hdaudio hdaudioC0D0: no AFG or MFG node found
  snd_hda_intel :2b:00.1: no codecs initialized

  I'll also attach the output of "pactl list" under each kernel (this
  shows the HDMI audio sink showing up under -32, but not -35) just in
  case that helps shed any light on things.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2009243] Re: kernel 5.19.0-35 clobbers Creative S/B AE-7 Sound Card

2023-03-26 Thread MRATT
Hi, same for me and my new Ubuntu Desktop 22.04 64-bit installation and
new "Creative Labs Sound Core3D [Sound Blaster Recon3D / Z-Series] (rev
01)" (Sound Blaster Audigy Fx V2 + DBPro daughterboard).

Wondered why it was working when playing around on the USB installation
media (kernel 5.15) but not in the actually on the fresh install + dist-
upgrade computer.

Thanks folks.

  Attempted install of kernel 5.19.0-35 using the Linux Mint package installer
LM 21.1 Vera, release 21.1).
  Clobbered my Sound Blaster AE-7.
  Could not even locate the device using Sound manager utility on Linux Mint
Panel (the enumerated device showed up as the embedded sound chip on the mobo
which I had previously disabled in the UEFI setup).
  Uninstalled kernel and reverted back to 5.19.0-32 using Timeshift restore
feature which worked fine before the update to 5.19.0-35.
  Tried again to install 5.19.0-35 the same way, just to be sure.
  The SB AE-7 got clobbered again.
  So restored back to 5.19.0-32 generic one more time, using Timeshift. SB AE-7
works fine now with this lower version kernel.
  Current hardware config:

  Asus Prime Z790-P wifi mobo.
  Intel Core i3-13100 processor (with Intel UHD 730 graphics).
  Corsair Vengeance DDR5 32gb (2x16) ram, 5200Mhz.
  3 x Nvme SSD.
  Boot drive is Western Digital Black SN770 500gb.
  Asus Nvidia RTX-3050 PCIe graphics card.
  Creative Labs Sound Blaster AE-7 audio card (PCIe).
  On-board audio chip (Realtek 7.1 Surround Sound High Definition Audio) is
disabled in UEFI.
  UEFI is AMI/BIOS, revision 0812.
  Linux Mint 21.1 is running on barebones hardware, no VM involved.
  No other O/S's are installed on the machine.

Hi. I also am affected by this. I wondered why it worked on the install
USB (5.15.xxx) but not on the actual computer it got installed on.

This is on a fresh install of Ubuntu Desktop 64-bit 22.04, with an
immediate `apt dist-upgrade -y`

Thanks all!

Bug description:
  Hello,
  My computer Dell Inspiron 5515 does not always wake up after sleeping, since
Linux generic 5.19.0-35, under Ubuntu 22.10. The problem was not solved with
Linux 5.19.0-38. Before this version, it worked well. If I start with Linux
5.19.0-29, the sleep mode works well. I have not tested the sleep mode with
Linux 5.19.0-31.
  It appears that there is a regression with the published Linux kernel. I stay
available if any more information needs to be transmitted.
  Thank you in advance,

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2012818] Re: Computer does not wake up after sleep mode

2023-03-26 Thread Jason
** Description changed:

  Hello,
- My computer Dell Inspiron 5515 does not always wake up after sleeping, since
Linux generic 5.19.0-35. The problem was not solved with Linux 5.19.0-38.
Before this version, it worked well. If I start with Linux 5.19.0-29, the sleep
mode works well. I have not tested the sleep mode with Linux 5.19.0-31.
+ My computer Dell Inspiron 5515 does not always wake up after sleeping, since
Linux generic 5.19.0-35, under Ubuntu 22.10. The problem was not solved with
Linux 5.19.0-38. Before this version, it worked well. If I start with Linux
5.19.0-29, the sleep mode works well. I have not tested the sleep mode with
Linux 5.19.0-31.
+ It appears that there is a regression with the published Linux kernel. I stay
available if any more information needs to be transmitted.
+ Thank you in advance,
  Have a nice day,
  Jason.

  To whom it may concern:

  I was experiencing frequent wake-ups from s0i3x on a HP Pro 435 G9
  convertible [1] using the Qualcomm FastConnect 6900 Soc [2]. The issue
  is related to FW revision
  WLAN.HSP.1.1-03125-QCAHSPSWPL_V1_V2_SILICONZ_LITE-3.6510.9 that comes
  bundled with Ubuntu 22.10.

  It appears the SoC increasingly triggering  wake-ups after being
  suspended for approx. 4 hrs.

  Read the full story at [4].

  The solution is to upgrade SoC firmware to rev
  WLAN.HSP.1.1-03125-QCAHSPSWPL_V1_V2_SILICONZ_LITE-3.6510.23/ [3]

  Best regards,Carsten

  [Impact]

  CONFIG_BLK_DEV_FD should be disabled, consistent with Focal and Impish
  kernel configurations. this config is also considered a security risk
  on cloud platforms.

  [Test Case]

  Look for floppy.ko in either of the modules packages.

  [Where things could go wrong]

  There should be no regression due to the removal of this module.

  Azure: Fix TDX backport

Status in linux-azure package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in linux-azure source package in Kinetic:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  SRU Justification

  [Impact]

  A backport caused by a stable updates rebase was not performed
  correctly. The symptom is a failure to boot on TDX enabled
  hypervisors.

  [Fix]

  Make sure the sources match those of 'https://github.com/dcui/tdx.git
  decui/upstream-kinetic-22.10/master-next/1209'.

  [Test Plan]

  Boot on a TDX enabled hypervisor. Tested by Gauthier Jolly.

  [Where things could go wrong]

  This is a new feature isolated to TDX, so there is little chance of
  regression.

Title:
  Kinetic linux-azure - Enable TDX guest driver w/MSFT Hyper-v

Status in linux-azure package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in linux-azure source package in Kinetic:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  SRU Justification

  [Impact]

  Support for Intel TDX guest driver is just now appearing upstream.
  This patch set is a backport of the patches essential to enabling TDX
  guest support on the Microsoft hypervisor.

  Most of these patches are not yet upstream, but are considered benign
  with respect to MSFT hypervisors that do not yet have support for TDX.
  I have boot tested on an existing Hyper-v hypervisor to ensure
  backwards compatibility.

  This patch set will eventually be replaced by upstream patches.

  [Test Plan]

  Boot on a TDX enabled Hyper-v instance.

  [Where things could go wrong]

  Existing Azure instances could have boot issues.

  ms_hyperv_init_platform() hides HV_MSR_REFERENCE_TSC_AVAILABLE for TDX

  downgrade the rating of hyperv_cs_msr.rating, so Invariant-TSC can be

Bug description:
  [Impact]
  The Intel IOMMU driver provides an option for strict mode. When disabled,
batching of IOTLB flush operations is permitted, allowing the user to trade-off
isolation for improved performance. Ubuntu's kernel currently lacks a parity
for this feature for ARM.

  There's a significant performance gain to be had by removing the need
  to flush the IOMMU TLB on every unmap on arm64. I'm seeing a 25%
  performance gain w/ fio reads on a single NVMe device.

  This mode of operation is available for x86 via the
  "intel_iommu=strict" parameter. Upstream now exposes an equivalent
  feature for ARM platforms via the "iommu.strict=[0|1]" parameter,
  while retaining the default strict-enabled mode.

  [Test Case]
  Run fio with the following config before and after applying the patches and
collection IOPS count. Run again after applying the patches. Finally, run a 3rd
time after adding iommu.strict=0 to the kernel commandline.

  Performance should not regress after the update. Performance should
  further improve after adding iommu.strict=0 - but if it doesn't for
  some reason, that is not a regression.

  $ cat fio.rc
  [global]
  rw=read
  direct=1
  ioengine=libaio
  iodepth=2048
  numjobs=10
  bs=4k
  group_reporting=1
  group_reporting=1
  cpumask=0xff
  runtime=100
  loops = 1

  [job1]
  filename=/dev/nvme0n1

  [Fix]
  44f6876a00e83 iommu/arm-smmu: Support non-strict mode
  b2dfeba654cb0 iommu/io-pgtable-arm-v7s: Add support for non-strict mode
  9662b99a19abc iommu/arm-smmu-v3: Add support for non-strict mode
  b6b65ca20bc93 iommu/io-pgtable-arm: Add support for non-strict mode
  68a6efe86f6a1 iommu: Add "iommu.strict" command line option
  2da274cdf998a iommu/dma: Add support for non-strict mode
  07fdef34d2be6 iommu/arm-smmu-v3: Implement flush_iotlb_all hook
  85c7a0f1ef624 iommu/io-pgtable-arm: Fix race handling in split_blk_unmap()

  [Regression Risk]
  Most of these patches are specific to ARM, and have been regression tested on
both arm64 (HiSilicon D06) and armhf (QEMU virt) using "stress-ng --vm $(nproc)"

  2 patches do touch arch-indep code however:

  > 68a6efe86f6a1 iommu: Add "iommu.strict" command line option
  Adds a new command line option and sets an attribute that iommu drivers can
optionally react to. Doesn't change default behavior.

  > 2da274cdf998a iommu/dma: Add support for non-strict mode
  This driver is only built for arm64 and ppc64el (determined by looking at the
build logs). Most of this patch only changes behavior in the non-default (and
new) iommu.strict=0 case. The exception, which is called out in the commit
message, is this hunk:

  -   WARN_ON(iommu_unmap(domain, dma_addr, size) != size);
  +   WARN_ON(iommu_unmap_fast(domain, dma_addr, size) != size);
  +   if (!cookie->fq_domain)
  +   iommu_tlb_sync(domain);

  In the default case, where fq_domain will be NULl, we are now factoring
iommu_unmap() into:
    iommu_unmap_fast()
    iommu_tlb_sync()

  Looking at the source to iommu_unmap() confirms that this is
  functionally equivalent.

  cma alloc failure in large 5.15 arm instances

Status in linux-aws package in Ubuntu:

Status in linux-aws source package in Jammy:

Status in linux-aws source package in Kinetic:

Bug description:
  When launching large arm64 instances on the focal or jammy ami, cma
  allocation errors appear in the dmesg out:

  [0.063255] cma: cma_alloc: reserved: alloc failed, req-size: 4096
  pages, ret: -12

  As far as I can tell, this does not impact instance launch in a
  meaningful way, but I am unsure of the other implications of this. I
  was able to confirm that these messages are only present in 5.15, as
  they do not show up in the bionic image, and rolling back focal to
  linux-aws 5.4 avoids them as well.

  This was present in at least 2 instance types and only appears to pop
  up in large sizes (2x4 does not produce them, 64x124 (c6gn.16xlarge)
  does)

  This could be as simple as just disabling CMA in the linux-aws pkg, as
  it appears this is already the case in linux-azure(LP: #1949770).

  Attaching dmesg out to the report.

  # Replication
  + Launch a large arm64 instance (c6gn.16xlarge)
  + Observe the messages in kern.log / dmesg

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2006994] Re: Ubuntu 22.10 and Dell Latitude 7390 – screen does not turn back on after waking up from sleep

2023-03-26 Thread Attila
INDEED! The problem is back. I can not explain how, however, after a
little while, after adding the i915.enable_psr=0 kernel boot option to
grub permanently, if the system fades to black or the system goes into
sleep mode, it won't come back up again :(

Non-explainable behaviour! Anyone knows of any fix to this? Would be
greatly appreciated!

Title:
  Ubuntu 22.10 and Dell Latitude 7390 – screen does not turn back on
  after waking up from sleep

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Ubuntu 22.10 and Dell Latitude 7390 – screen does not turn back on
  after waking up from sleep

  Scenario:

  Fresh and clean Ubuntu 22.10 install on Latitude 7390, requiring
  nomodeset kernel boot option to be added in GRUB at boot time when
  booting from USB stick. This can be achieved by following instructions
  from here: https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-uk/000123893/manual-
  nomodeset-kernel-boot-line-option-for-linux-booting

  Then, nomodeset needs to be permanently added to /etc/default/grub
  Followed instructions from
https://askubuntu.com/questions/38780/how-do-i-set-nomodeset-after-ive-already-installed-ubuntu

  If nomodeset is not added, Dell Latitude 7390 will freeze at one point
  or another, either before reaching the Gnome desktop, either little
  after. This is the case with both, installing Ubuntu 22.10 from Live
  USB and running Ubuntu 22.10 after install the install (and having the
  USB stick disconnected).

  The issue after having Ubuntu 22.10 installed on Dell Latitude 7390 and
having nomodeset permanently added to GRUB for each boot is:

  If by chance the system goes into sleep, after waking up, there is a
  totally pitch-black screen; nothing shows up, no screen backlight
  either. However, caps-lock works and I am able to log in to the system
  via ssh and can see the system is up an running well. I can even issue
  a request to send the system to sleep by “sudo systemctl suspend” and
  then wake the the system up several times without loosing ssh access,
  however, the screen will remain pitch-black.

  Other tries to troubleshoot and see if the system can be brought back with a
working display (while nomodeset kernel option is being used):

  1. sudo systemctl suspend -i
  >>> this will result in an unusable system after waking up, again, with a
pitch-black screen; moreover, the caps-lock would not work, the keyboard
backlight won’t work, ssh won’t work; I need a hard reset to get the system
back up.

  2. start the system in single user mode by inserting “single” in GRUB at boot
time;
  >>> the system will be unusable after waking up, same as in try 1.

  3. after a normal boot into the GNOME desktop with kernel nomodeset
  option and investigating the dmesg for any acpi, no error could be
  found.

  Tried to read up on other possible solutions, while stumbled upon the ubuntu
wiki page below:
  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UnderstandingSuspend
  Unfortunately, to not much help so far.

  Other notes:
  N1. All the above were done by having the latest BIOS v1.30.0
  N2. This laptop came with Windows 10 Pro which works fine: goes into suspend
and wakes up fine, with working screen and display.

  N3. Dell Latitude 7390 was released on 15 Feb 2018 ( source:
https://www.laptoparena.net/dell/notebook-dell-latitude-7390-n025l739013emea-black-12984
 ) and the user manual states it has support for Ubuntu. Therefore, other older
and major Ubuntu versions were given a try, along with a new version of Fedora:
  N3.1 – Ubuntu 22.04
  N3.2 – Ubuntu 18.04.6
  N3.3 – Ubuntu 16.04.7
  N3.4 – Fedora-Workstation-Live-x86_64-37-1.7
  Each of the above will freeze at one point or another if nomodeset is not
used, except the Ubuntu 18.04.6 and Ubuntu 16.04.7 which will run well and
install well from the USB Live stick and will also run fine after the install,
until the system goes into sleep, after which, when the system is awake, the
screen is black and will have nothing displayed.

  Any advice will be appreciated. Thank you!
