Title:
  Blank screen on 5.4.0-152.169

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I run Linux Mint on a pretty old HP laptop. Today I updated Ubuntu
from 5.4.0-150 to -152.169 and the screen is _completely blank_ after
reboot. Starting in recovery mode, the screen works but I get an
infinite loop trying to update some (unspecified) video driver. I went
through the whole process twice using different mirrors. I have
reverted to -150 and everything is fine. For obvious reasons I cannot
give you any output from the failing kernel. Were any drivers removed
  from -152?

  FYI on the working kernel:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2024306] Re: Blank screen on 5.4.0-152.169

2023-06-17 Thread Brian E Carpenter
I ran apport-collect on the WORKING kernel, not on the failing one
(-152.169). I hope it helps anyway.

Were any drivers removed
  from -152?

After updating to Kernel 5.4.0-147 the machine boots to a black screen. I can

driver may be the issue. Tried to find a update for the video driver but could
not. Had to go back to 5.4.0-146. Here is my system information:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2024306] [NEW] Blank screen on 5.4.0-152.169

2023-06-17 Thread Brian E Carpenter
Public bug reported:

I run Linux Mint on a pretty old HP laptop. Today I updated Ubuntu from
5.4.0-150 to -152.169 and the screen is _completely blank_ after reboot.
Starting in recovery mode, the screen works but I get an infinite loop
trying to update some (unspecified) video driver. I went through the
whole process twice using different mirrors. I have reverted to -150 and
everything is fine. For obvious reasons I cannot give you any output
from the failing kernel. Were any drivers removed from -152?

FYI on the working kernel:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2024305] [NEW] All GPU functionality stops working whenever an updated Nvidia driver is installed and until the system is rebooted

2023-06-17 Thread Alistair Buxton
Public bug reported:

To reproduce:

1. Install Ubuntu
2. Switch to Nvidia driver
3. Wait

The default for Ubuntu is to install updates automatically in the
background. Eventually an updated Nvidia driver will be installed, and
then all graphics acceleration stops working for any new programs which
are launched. Note that it continues working for anything that was
already running.

This results in the following things happening:

1. Any program that requires OpenGL will crash on startup. For example
glxgears:

```
X Error of failed request:  BadValue (integer parameter out of range for
operation)
  Major opcode of failed request:  152 (GLX)
  Minor opcode of failed request:  3 (X_GLXCreateContext)
  Value in failed request:  0x0
  Serial number of failed request:  36
  Current serial number in output stream:  37
```

2. Any program that uses CUDA will fail in a similar way.

3. Programs that can fall back to software rendering will do so. For
example, Firefox will start using software rendering, causing it to max
out several CPU cores on heavy websites like Discord.

Expected Result:

One of the following:

1. Don't automatically install driver updates in the background.
2. Install them in a way that doesn't prevent them from working until a reboot.
3. Display a message informing the user that the drivers were updated and
requesting a reboot.

User Impact

It can be difficult for the user to notice this has happened for the
following reasons:

1. There is no notification that the driver has been updated.
2. Most software will fall back to software rendering and just run slowly for
no obvious reason.
3. Any software that was already running before the update will continue
working properly.

So then the user gets left with a system that runs really slowly until
they notice there is a problem because a program won't run, or they
happened to notice that Firefox is using 500% CPU. This may be some time
after the driver was updated. It is difficult for the user to work out
that they need to reboot.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2012019] Re: Fix E-star testing failure with RTK 8852BE

2023-06-17 Thread Kiwinote
Hello. I have a laptop with a realtek 8852be wifi card and have been
using the 6.2 kernels as provided in lunar for the past few months. That
has seemed to work fine. As of a day or two ago I installed the
6.2.0-23.23 as an update in lunar and since then I have had issues with
the wifi cutting out unexpectedly (usually after a few hours, so
multiple times a day). Apologies if you would prefer a new bug, but
looking at the changelog it would appear that this bug seems the most
obvious change that could have triggered this regression. Turning wifi
off and back on again using the wifi button in the top right hand corner
of gnome-shell doesn't work (ie visually the button turns off and on
again, but won't list/connect to network). This means that I don't know
what else to do than to reboot my laptop every time this occurs. I have
attached the kernel log when this occurs and a screenshot of the log
viewer - please note that within the space of 10mins tens of thousands
of log entries are written. This would appear to be quite a frustrating
regression for those with a 8852be wifi card, so thanks in advance for
your considerations.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2016398] Re: stacked overlay file system mounts that have chroot() called against them appear to be getting locked (by the kernel most likely?)

2023-06-17 Thread Nerdopolis
Is there anything that needs to be done for this to be triaged? I have a
script that can replicate this problem attached, and I narrowed the
issue down to a downstream commit.

Title:
stacked overlay file system mounts that have chroot() called against
them appear to be getting locked (by the kernel most likely?)

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Hi

  BACKGROUND:
  ---
I have a set of scripts that debootstraps and builds vanilla Debian installs,
where the only modifications are what packages are installed. Then that becomes
the lower directory of an overlayfs mount, a tmpfs becomes the upperdir, and
then that becomes the chroot where config changes are made with more scripts.
This overlayfs is mounted in its own mount namespace as the script is unshare'd

Within these scripts, I make packages with a fork of checkinstall I
made which uses the / as the lowerdir, as overlayfs allows that, a
tmpfs as the upperdir, the install command is run with chroot, and
  then the contents are copied.

  THE ISSUE:
  --
I noticed that it appears that my ramdisks are remaining in memory, I have
isolated it out to the overlayfs mounts with the overlayfs as the lowerdir
where chroot is being called on it. I tried entering the namespace myself and
umounting it, and notice I get the error "Target is busy"

With the "Target Is Busy" issue, I tried to `lsof` and `fuser` and
`lsfd` as much as I could, but every user mode tool shows absolutely
  NO files open at all

I was using Kubuntu 18.04, it was an old install and 32 bit, so I had
no upgrade path to be using more recent versions. Now I am on 23.04,
but I also think this is happening on a 22.10 laptop

  DIAGNOSIS:
  --
I am able to isolate it out, and get this to replicate in the smallest script
that I could that is now attached. the chroot is important. I am able to
unmount the second overlayfs if chroot is never called. Nothing ever has to run
IN the chroot, trying to call a binary that does not exist, and then trying to
unmount it results in "target is busy" with no open files reportable by user
mode tools

  FURTHER TESTING:

Trying to find out the version of Linux this was introduced, I made a script
that builds a very minimal ext4 file for a VM with a small debootstrapped
system, builds a kernel, and runs the kernel with QEMU..
but when I started, after all that, I can't replicate it at all with a
vanilla 6.2.0 kernel. I used the same config out of my /boot to the .config,
only tweaking a few options like SYSTEM_TRUSTED_KEYS. Trying to unmount the
second filesystem actually results in success

I then built a Kubuntu Lunar VM, and was able to replicate it on not just my
system. When I built and install the vanilla kernel with bindeb-pkg, and then I
boot the vanilla kernel, I can't replicate it, the second filesystem unmounts.
When I reboot the VM, and start the default distribution kernel, I am able to
replicate the issue, the second filesystem being unable to unmount, with
"target is busy" with no files open according to standard usermode tools, when
chroot is called on it

I tried to look at patches in
  git://git.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-kernel/ubuntu/+source/linux/+git/lunar
and git log --oneline --grep="sauce" but none of them really look relevant. I
could be VERY wrong in this matter though

  SUMMARY:

Long story short, (I am VERY sorry about the length:)

  I make an overlayfs,
I make a second overlayfs with the first overlayfs as the second one's
lowerdir,
I chroot into the second overlayfs, and then later I can't unmount the second
one as it says "Target is busy", but the user mode tools don't show any files
open at all. If I mount the second overlayfs, and then unmount it without ever
chroot-ing into it I AM able to unmount it

The attached script should replicate the issue

This doesn't seem to happen on the vanilla Linux kernel, with the same as
close as possible config that Ubuntu uses

  Thanks

Title:
accept returns duplicate endpoints under load

Status in Linux:
  New
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
When accepting client connections under load, duplicate endpoints may
be returned. These endpoints will have different (usually sequential)
file descriptors but will refer to the same connection (same server
IP, same server port, same client IP, same client port). Both copies
of the endpoint appear to be functional.

  Reproduction requires:
  - compilation of the attached server.c program
  - wrk (https://github.com/wg/wrk) to generate load

  The steps to reproduce are:
  - run 'server' application in one console window
  - run 'for i in {1..50}; do /opt/wrk/wrk -t 2 -c 1000 -d 5s --latency
--timeout 1s http://localhost:/post; done' in a second console window
  - run the same command in a third window to generate concurrent load

You may need to run additional instance of the wrk command in multiple
  windows to trigger the issue.

When the problem occurs the server executable will exit and print some
debugging info. e.g.:
  accerror = 1950892, counter = 10683, port = 59892, clientfd = 233, lastClient
= 232

This indicates that the sockets with file descriptors 233 and 232 are
  duplicates.

The issue has been reproduced on fully patched versions of Ubuntu
20.04 and 18.04. Other versions have not been tested.

This issue was originally observed in Java and was reported against the
Spring Framework:
  https://github.com/spring-projects/spring-framework/issues/26434

Investigation from the Spring team and the Apache Tomcat team identified that
it appeared to be a JDK issue:
  https://bugs.openjdk.java.net/browse/JDK-8263243

Further research from the JDK team determined that the issue was at
the OS level. Hence this report.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2023986] Re: Drivers not working using kernel linux-image-6.2.0-1003-oracle

2023-06-17 Thread Francis Ginther
Thanks to everyone supplying their logs. I'm still looking through these
to try to understand what's going on here.

For most that hit this issue, the solution would be interrupt the boot
loader to boot back into the generic kernel, then remove the oracle and
lowlatency kernels.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2024287] [NEW] Wayland session not working with nvidia-driver-530 (proprietary, tested) on high refresh rate monitors.

2023-06-17 Thread Alexander Brissman
Public bug reported:

The currently "tested" Nvidia driver 530 has a critical bug which causes
Wayland sessions to crash during logon. It affects all desktop
environments but apparently it only happens when the monitor refresh
rate is more than 120hz.

https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/t/cant-boot-into-kde-wayland-
session-with-530-30-02/244559/42

https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/t/rtx4090-530-drivers-not-working-
on-wayland-gnome-screen-turns-off-works-on-xorg/249204

Apparently it is solved in driver version 535.54.03 which is not yet
available in the Ubuntu repos.

Downgrading to nvidia-driver-525 solves the problem.

Title:
Wayland session not working with nvidia-driver-530 (proprietary,
tested) on high refresh rate monitors.

Status in nvidia-graphics-drivers-530 package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
The currently "tested" Nvidia driver 530 has a critical bug which
causes Wayland sessions to crash during logon. It affects all desktop
environments but apparently it only happens when the monitor refresh
  rate is more than 120hz.

  https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/t/cant-boot-into-kde-wayland-
  session-with-530-30-02/244559/42

  https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/t/rtx4090-530-drivers-not-working-
  on-wayland-gnome-screen-turns-off-works-on-xorg/249204

Apparently it is solved in driver version 535.54.03 which is not yet
  available in the Ubuntu repos.

Downgrading to nvidia-driver-525 solves the problem.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2023986] Re: Drivers not working using kernel linux-image-6.2.0-1003-oracle

2023-06-17 Thread faattori
I have now been able to boot into 6.2.0-23-generic kernel with updated
nvidia drivers, just by doing a regular update with the default GUI
software.

It seems that for me they have fixed whatever the issue was in apt, no
longer was it trying to install some oracle or lowlatency kernel
components.

Drivers not working using kernel linux-image-6.2.0-1003-oracle

Status in linux-signed-oracle package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
My Ubuntu 23.04 installed two kernels linux-image-6.2.0-1003-oracle

wifi, bluetooth, touchpad and ethernet stopped working. Rebooting
using 6.2.0-1003-lowlatency or 6.2.0-20-generic solved the driver
