Bug description:
  [Impact]

  Ethernet is unstable with Realtek RTL8168h/8111h NIC and kernel 6.2
  resulting in frequent transmit queue timeouts. Related to ASPM. See
  'original description' below.

  [Test Case]

  Just regular usage for an extended period of time. No transmit queue
  timeouts with RTL8168h/8111h NICs.

  [Where Problems Could Occur]

  Modification are isolated to the r8169 driver so only machine where
  that driver is loaded are affected. Issues could show up as kernel
  crashes, stack traces, non-fnuctional wired network.

  [Original Description]

  hello,
  it is my first time reporting a pug hope it is the last

  there is thread here
  https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2489146=14151513

  another user experienced similar issue

  my network work fine at startup keep working for hours then disconnect and
cannot reconnect without a restart
  I tested the cable using another pc and it was working repluged with no
difference

  I thought it is caused by nvidia driver so changed it and the problem
  persist

  I use systemd-networkd

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2034477] Re: Keyboard and Touchpad Not Working in New Lenovo V15 Gen4 Laptop

2023-10-20 Thread Endre Olah
Hi Quinten!

If you could explain how to do it and what to do to get it done. I would
not mind to try, but never did such thing before.

In the discussions everybody is talking about it like others are on the
same level, but some of us should start from scratch.

So if you can describe:

1. What tools are needed?
2. What source files needed?
3. What to be changed?
4. How to compile?
5. What should we do with the result of compile?

Thanks

Bug description:
  Hello.

  Ubuntu 22.04.3 with (later upgraded to kernel 6.2.0-32-generic) was
  installed in rewly purchased LENOVO V15 GEN4 AMN (AMD Ryzen 5 7520u)
  laptop and it was noticed that keyboard, touchpad and microphone are
  not working. The keyboard and touchpad work fine in BIOS setup and
  till GRUB (command line). It was found that when external devices such
  as keyboard, mouse and microphone are connected through USB and 3.5
  jack, respectively, these work just fine. To confirm these are not
  hardware problems, Microsoft Windows 11 (Home) was installed in
  another disk partition and observed all these working alright. Hence a
  bug is being reported to draw attention of the concerned team and I
  request them to refer this issue and do the needful at the earliest.

  Pradip Kumar Das

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2033327] Re: Desktop cannot resume after suspend: screen not detected

2023-10-20 Thread James Phillips
Kern.log with similar suspend messages. I was looking at the logs
because my game of Euro Truck simulator 2 appeared to crash: but in
hindsight it was probably just the video driver that crashed. Steam was
still running right up until reboot. The game log was truncated by 4
minutes: despite logging into a terminal and typing 'sync' before
"sysctl reboot -i". The video crash happens at

When the video driver crashes I was unable to use the desktop
environment: but the display manager seems to work.

I am using the AMD Rocm 5.6 video drivers. (The last ones supporting my

Title:
  Desktop cannot resume after suspend: screen not detected

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Hardware:

  - Desktop PC (Intel i5 4th gen)
  - GPU: AMD RX580
  - Ubuntu 22.04 with kernel HWE 6.2

  Steps to reproduce:

  1. Start the device
  2. Suspend
  3. Resume by pressing a key on the keyboard

  Expected results:

  The screen lights up, showing the screen to put my password to resume
  the session.

  Actual result:

  The screen OSD displays a "No Signal" message before turning off.
  Nothing seems to happen when I press keyboard keys or move the mouse.

  Switching to a TTY by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F3 works: I can login and see
  the logs (that's how I filed this bug).

  Switching back to graphics session (Ctrl+Alt+F2) does't work: it shows
  the cursor and nothing else (black screen).

  Switching to login screen (Ctrl+Alt+F1) works: I can see the list of
  users, select on and enter my password... but then I'm back to the
  same black screen with the mouse cursor.

  This is not a regression, as the same problem happened already with
  the previous point release (I believe it was Linux kernel 5.15).

Confirms that it is probably upstream bug #2362
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/2362

The issue is that the GPU driver tries to dump the contents of VRAM to
system RAM upon suspend. However, this is not able to happen because the
disks (with swap) are suspended first. It appears that the solution is
likely to dump the VRAM contents during the "pre-suspend" hook.
Incidentally the bug appear to date back to at least 2010: but VRAM was
a lot smaller compared to system RAM back then.

I got the same errors: but was able to resume from suspend for some
reason. I *suspect* it is because I am using the Rocm GPU drivers.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2031537] Re: Ethernet not stable 23.04 (RTL8168/8169)

2023-10-20 Thread Marcelo Pio de Castro
Is this going to be backported to normal 22.04 kernel (not HWE)? I
believe this issue affects a lot of DELL notebooks, like the one I am
using on my work PC

Bug description:
  [Impact]

  Ethernet is unstable with Realtek RTL8168h/8111h NIC and kernel 6.2
  resulting in frequent transmit queue timeouts. Related to ASPM. See
  'original description' below.

  [Test Case]

  Just regular usage for an extended period of time. No transmit queue
  timeouts with RTL8168h/8111h NICs.

  [Where Problems Could Occur]

  Modification are isolated to the r8169 driver so only machine where
  that driver is loaded are affected. Issues could show up as kernel
  crashes, stack traces, non-fnuctional wired network.

  [Original Description]

  hello,
  it is my first time reporting a pug hope it is the last

  there is thread here
  https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2489146=14151513

  another user experienced similar issue

  my network work fine at startup keep working for hours then disconnect and
cannot reconnect without a restart
  I tested the cable using another pc and it was working repluged with no
difference

  I thought it is caused by nvidia driver so changed it and the problem
  persist

  I use systemd-networkd

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2039542] Re: Remove duplication of devm_pwmchip_add function definition

2023-10-20 Thread Ubuntu Kernel Bot
This bug is awaiting verification that the linux-kvm/6.2.0-1016.16
kernel in -proposed solves the problem. Please test the kernel and
update this bug with the results. If the problem is solved, change the
tag 'verification-needed-lunar-linux-kvm' to 'verification-done-lunar-
linux-kvm'. If the problem still exists, change the tag 'verification-
needed-lunar-linux-kvm' to 'verification-failed-lunar-linux-kvm'.

If verification is not done by 5 working days from today, this fix will
be dropped from the source code, and this bug will be closed.

See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how
to enable and use -proposed. Thank you!

  SRU Justification:

  [Impact]

  * Upstream commit 88da4e8113110d5f4ebdd2f8cd0899e300cd1954 "pwm: Add a stub
for devm_pwmchip_add()", was applied the second time during the latest upstream
patchset (#LP: 2037005) for cycle 2023.10.02.
  * `git am` did not detect that the changes were applied, leading to the same
function definition being duplicated.
  * This was not caught when the main kernel was built because this code is
under CONFIG_PWM=n. The main kernel and pretty much every kernel apart from
linux-kvm, has CONFIG_PWM=y.
  * The problem was caught when lunar:linux-kvm was cranked and build failed
with the following error:

  ```
  In file included from /build/lunar/drivers/acpi/acpi_lpss.c:23:
  /build/lunar/include/linux/pwm.h:486:19: error: redefinition of
'devm_pwmchip_add'
  /build/lunar/include/linux/pwm.h:481:19: note: previous definition of
'devm_pwmchip_add' with type 'int(struct device *, struct pwm_chip *)'
    481 | static inline int devm_pwmchip_add(struct device *dev, struct
pwm_chip *chip)
    |   ^~~~
  ```

  [Fix]
  * Revert the commit.
  * Because this affects only linux:kvm, it is necessary to apply this fix for
lunar:linux-kvm for cycle 2023.10.02, but the main kernel can wait for the next
cycle.

  [Test plan]
  * Since linux-kvm was the only kernel that had this issue, I applied the
patch to kvm after I rebased the latest changes from the parent and did a build
test.
  * I also did a build test for linux:main just to make sure

  [Where problems could occur]
  * This change is pretty non-invasive, so nowhere

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2038349] Re: [j:linux-intel-iotg][j:linux-intel-iot-realtime] Cannot set frame preemption

2023-10-20 Thread Ubuntu Kernel Bot
This bug is awaiting verification that the linux-intel-
iotg/5.15.0-1044.50 kernel in -proposed solves the problem. Please test
the kernel and update this bug with the results. If the problem is
solved, change the tag 'verification-needed-jammy-linux-intel-iotg' to
'verification-done-jammy-linux-intel-iotg'. If the problem still exists,
change the tag 'verification-needed-jammy-linux-intel-iotg' to
'verification-failed-jammy-linux-intel-iotg'.

If verification is not done by 5 working days from today, this fix will
be dropped from the source code, and this bug will be closed.

See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how
to enable and use -proposed. Thank you!

  After going through the code, it looks like this is caused by the variable
fpcmd->add_frag_size is set to 0 and in the function igc_ethtool_set_preempt()
there is the following check:

  if (fpcmd->add_frag_size < 68 || fpcmd->add_frag_size > 260)
   return -EINVAL;

  And this is causing the the --set-frame-preemption to fail.

  ubuntu@adl-p:~$ sudo ethtool-rt.ethtool --set-frame-preemption enp169s0 fp on
; echo $?
  netlink error: frame preemption settings update failed
  netlink error: Invalid argument
  81
  ubuntu@adl-p:~$

  I see in igc.h that there is a #define for
  IGC_I225_MIN_FRAG_SIZE_DEFAULT which is:

  #define IGC_I225_MIN_FRAG_SIZE_DEFAULT 68

  This is set in igc_tsn_disable_offload()

  static int igc_tsn_disable_offload(struct igc_adapter *adapter)
  {
  ...
   adapter->cycle_time = 0;
   adapter->add_frag_size = IGC_I225_MIN_FRAG_SIZE_DEFAULT;
  ...
  }

  but igc_tsn_disable_offload is not called, so the value is never set.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2036742] Re: amdgpu crash on Mantic

2023-10-20 Thread Mario Limonciello
To explain some of the differences in the logs:

* UVD is the IP block that fails to init (so no "UVD and UVD ENC initialized
successfully").
* Once an IP block fails, next one isn't even tried (so no "VCE initialized
successfully")
* kfd doesn't initialize because amdgpu_amdkfd_device_init() won't be called
until end of hw_init (all blocks must succeed)

Between 5.13.19 and 5.14-rc2 there aren't any UVD changes that would
cause this.

$ git log --oneline v5.13.19..v5.14-rc2 amdgpu/amdgpu_uvd.c amdgpu/uvd_v6_0.c
09b020bb05a5 Merge tag 'drm-misc-next-2021-06-09' of
git://anongit.freedesktop.org/drm/drm-misc into drm-next
d3fae3b3daac dma-buf: drop the _rcu postfix on function names v3
5745d647d556 Merge tag 'amd-drm-next-5.14-2021-06-02' of
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/agd5f/linux into drm-next
66c46621c812 amdgpu: remove unreachable code
ae4c0d7674a7 drm/amdgpu: make sure we unpin the UVD BO
f89f8c6bafd0 drm/amdgpu: Guard against write accesses after device removal
355b60296143 Merge drm/drm-next into drm-misc-next

This tells me it's probably something outside of the direct code causing
it. Without seeing further steps into the bisect the biggest suspect in
my mind is 0064b0ce85bb.

Can you please try amdgpu.aspm=0?

The issue is described on

Upstream kernel patches are still under discussion. Reopening the issue
does not help unless there are upstream patches that we can merge into
our kernel.

Here is the latest work on cleaning up the code:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2034477] Re: Keyboard and Touchpad Not Working in New Lenovo V15 Gen4 Laptop

2023-10-20 Thread Quinten Van Ginderen
Hey guys, how would one go ahead and get the patch into a current
kernel? i'm willing to test it out and play with it for a while since i
also have one of those lenovo ideapad lovechilds...

for now a wireless keyboard with integrated touchpad will do, but i'm
really stoked to see this issue resolved. i got this from the mint
forums, setting up pci=nocrs in grub default, but that doesn't fix the
keyboard/trackpad issues instead it breaks the realtek wifi driver.

I've also noticed that indeed the F5/6 keys to change brightness work
and the flight mode key.

Really stoked to see this bug being squashed =D

  All kernels of 6.x looks to be missing some port of the bug fix from
  5.19

  before and including kernel 5.15 there was a bug that after locking
  the screen and logging back audio via HDMI was disappearing. Later the
  bug was fixed and definitely not present in 5.19

  However, this bug is present in 6.x kernels included in Lunar and
  Mantic as well as in 6.5.7-060507.202310102154

  Currently I rolled back to 5.19 to confirm that this issue is fixed in
  this kernel.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2039970] Re: Kernels 6.x have a regression for Audio via HDMI

2023-10-20 Thread Juerg Haefliger
Were you encountering the problem when the data was collected? I.e. did
you lock and unlock and confirm audio is gone before collecting the
data?

Title:
  Kernels 6.x have a regression for Audio via HDMI

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  data collected for
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/2039882

  [Dell Inspiron 16 7610]

  All kernels of 6.x looks to be missing some port of the bug fix from
  5.19

  before and including kernel 5.15 there was a bug that after locking
  the screen and logging back audio via HDMI was disappearing. Later the
  bug was fixed and definitely not present in 5.19

  However, this bug is present in 6.x kernels included in Lunar and
  Mantic as well as in 6.5.7-060507.202310102154

  Currently I rolled back to 5.19 to confirm that this issue is fixed in
  this kernel.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2039819] Re: amdgpu crashing intermittently under high load on Kubuntu 23.10

2023-10-20 Thread Isaac True
Hi Mario,

It doesn't look like 3.03 is publically available yet. Once it is, I'll
update this bug to say if it's been resolved or not.

Thanks

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2039868] Re: amdgpu reset during usage of firefox

2023-10-20 Thread Pirouette Cacahuète
Thanks, I'll try and keep you updated, however I am also facing bug
2039958 (probably a dupe of bug 2034619), so I might still need GNOME
45.1 to be released.

For Framework please upgrade to bios 3.03. There is a very crucial bug
in 3.02 that can lead to stuff like this.

Title:
  Kernels 6.x have a regression for Audio via HDMI

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  data collected for
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/2039882

  [Dell Inspiron 16 7610]

  All kernels of 6.x looks to be missing some port of the bug fix from
  5.19

  before and including kernel 5.15 there was a bug that after locking
  the screen and logging back audio via HDMI was disappearing. Later the
  bug was fixed and definitely not present in 5.19

  However, this bug is present in 6.x kernels included in Lunar and
  Mantic as well as in 6.5.7-060507.202310102154

  Currently I rolled back to 5.19 to confirm that this issue is fixed in
  this kernel.

hi Juerg,
unfortunately, I do not know if there was a bug report on this issue. I just
made empirical tests with different kernels to confirm that in was fixed in
5.19 and then came back in 6.x

current bug has attachments about 5.19 kernel which works.
Here is the bug with Mantic kernel debug logs

2023-10-20 Thread Bruce Lay
Same issue here since 12 Oct 2023 on the same machine. Thanks for this.
Downgrading the Kernel version also worked, though I just followed the
steps here under "7. Change or Set Default Kernel Version"
https://linux.how2shout.com/how-to-change-default-kernel-in-
ubuntu-22-04-20-04-lts/ to select the version upon boot as
6.0.0-1021-oem was still installed.

Title:
  Wireless not working on Dell XPS 9320 1360P (Intel 6E AX211 Wireless

Status in linux-signed-oem-6.1 package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Posting here since there are barely any reports on this issue except
  this Intel community forum ticket.
  https://community.intel.com/t5/Wireless/Wifi-is-not-working-on-
  ubuntu/m-p/1532192/thread-id/50189

  In recent days (Oct 16 2023) wireless suddenly stopped working and the
  "wireless adapter not found" message is printed in Ubuntu's Wireless
  settings. The above ticket has most of the technical details, but it
  looks like it's an issue with the recent kernel version 6.1.0-1023-oem
  and happens on Dell XPS 9320 with Intel 6E AX211 Wireless Card.

  Note Intel have returned to the issue submitter and ask him to turn
  the issue back to Dell. Beats me why can't these two corporations
  figure the issue on their own and ask the user to act as a proxy.

  The current temporary solution until this issue is investigated and
  resolved is to downgrade the kernel version. The second most recent
  version I had available was 6.0.0-1021-oem and it resolved the issue.
  I followed this guide and it resolved it for me.
  https://www.groovypost.com/howto/how-to-downgrade-the-kernel-in-
  ubuntu/

  Note that running Ubuntu updates can re-update your kernel version
  back.

  Link to "Ask Ubuntu" question since this issue took a considerable
  amount of my time to pinpoint. Hoping to save others the trouble:

Bug description:
  SRU Jusitification for firmware-sof

  [Impact]
  To support audio functions on RPL Dell SKU 0C11, it requires the topology
file from sof-tplg-v2.2.7

  [Fix]
  Pull the sof-rpl-rt711-l0-rt1316-l12.tplg from
https://github.com/thesofproject/sof-bin/releases/tag/v2023.09

  [Test Case]
  Install the fixes on the target platform(RPL Dell SKU 0C11) and verify the
audio function.
  1. Install the firmware-sof on platform(RPL) Dell SKU 0C11
  2. Make sure the audio output/input devices are not dummy in audio settings.

  [Where problems could occur]
  New firmware is only for the RPL platforms which requires the specific
topology file.

  [Misc]
  https://github.com/thesofproject/sof-bin/releases/tag/v2023.09

  [Impact]
  Audio play/capture are not functional on specific Dell machines of Intel RPL
platforms

  [Fix]
  Backport the fix from Intel in https://github.com/thesofproject/linux

  [Test Case]
  1. Power on the machine and open the audio settings
  2. Verify it's not `Dummy` shown on the Audio output/input option

  [Where problems could occur]
  Only affect specific Intel RPL platforms. The risk of regression is low.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2036742] Re: amdgpu crash on Mantic

2023-10-20 Thread Paolo Gentili
I can't install Jammy because I can't see the installer, so I did the
test on Focal.

5.13.19 works, 5.14-rc2 fails (same for 5.14.0). Dmesg attached.

  Booting from USB the latest Mantic Desktop daily image (2023-09-20),
  just after the initial logs, nothing is displayed on screen. The
  system is still alive since _autoinstall_ works as intended. Once
  provisioned, the problem is still present.

  It seems related to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-
  firmware/+bug/2029396 .

  dmesg attached.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2039575] Re: [UBUNTU 22.04] SMC stats: Wrong bucket calculation for payload of exactly 4096 bytes.

2023-10-20 Thread Frank Heimes
So it's upstream with kernel v6.6-rc6.
With that it affects jammy, lunar and mantic.
(Would have been ideal to have it tagged as upstream stable update.)

  Bug description by Nils H.:

   Overview:

  The following line in the SMC stats code (net/smc/smc_stats.h) caught my
attention when using a payload of exactly 4096 bytes:

  #define SMC_STAT_PAYLOAD_SUB(_smc_stats, _tech, key, _len, _rc) \
  do { \
typeof(_smc_stats) stats = (_smc_stats); \
typeof(_tech) t = (_tech); \
typeof(_len) l = (_len); \
int _pos = fls64((l) >> 13); \
typeof(_rc) r = (_rc); \
int m = SMC_BUF_MAX - 1; \
this_cpu_inc((*stats).smc[t].key ## _cnt); \
if (r <= 0) \
break; \
_pos = (_pos < m) ? ((l == 1 << (_pos + 12)) ? _pos - 1 : _pos) : m; \
<---
this_cpu_inc((*stats).smc[t].key ## _pd.buf[_pos]); \
this_cpu_add((*stats).smc[t].key ## _bytes, r); \
  } \
  while (0)

  With l = 4096, _pos evaluates to -1.

  Checking with the following uperf profile:
  # cat rr1c-4kx4k---1.xml

  smcd stats output:
  # smcd -d stats reset

  Instead of including the payload in the wrong >512KB buckets, output should
be to have 19 reqs in the 8KB buckets for TX stats and 9 reqs in the 8KB bucket

   Repro:

  0. Install uperf.
  1. Reset SMC-D stats on client and server.
  2. Start uperf at server side: "uperf -vs".
  3. Update profile with remote IP (server IP) and start uperf at client:
"uperf -vai 5 -m rr1c-4kx4k---1.xml" (uperf profile, see above)

Bug description:
  SRU Jusitification for firmware-sof

  [Impact]
  To support audio functions on RPL Dell SKU 0C11, it requires the topology
file from sof-tplg-v2.2.7

  [Fix]
  Pull the sof-rpl-rt711-l0-rt1316-l12.tplg from
https://github.com/thesofproject/sof-bin/releases/tag/v2023.09

  [Test Case]
  Install the fixes on the target platform(RPL Dell SKU 0C11) and verify the
audio function.
  1. Install the firmware-sof on platform(RPL) Dell SKU 0C11
  2. Make sure the audio output/input devices are not dummy in audio settings.

  [Where problems could occur]
  New firmware is only for the RPL platforms which requires the specific
topology file.

  [Misc]
  https://github.com/thesofproject/sof-bin/releases/tag/v2023.09

  [Impact]
  Audio play/capture are not functional on specific Dell machines of Intel RPL
platforms

  [Fix]
  Backport the fix from Intel in https://github.com/thesofproject/linux

  [Test Case]
  1. Power on the machine and open the audio settings
  2. Verify it's not `Dummy` shown on the Audio output/input option

  [Where problems could occur]
  Only affect specific Intel RPL platforms. The risk of regression is low.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2034477] Re: Keyboard and Touchpad Not Working in New Lenovo V15 Gen4 Laptop

2023-10-20 Thread Danielle Satterfield
I can confirm that the referenced patch does resolve the issues on my
V14 G4 AMN. Reading through everything though, I would not call the
patch a fix as it seems to be treating a symptom of a deeper issue that
is still being investigated.

I was having a similar error with dpkg as follows --

In my case my grub configuration was erroring - I had added zswap to the
system, and added the line "
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
zswap.enabled=1"

My mistake, the correct method to add the line is "

After changing the grub file (sudo gedit grub), then running "sudo
update-grub", my update and upgrade errors from dpkg vanished. I haven't
rebooted yet, that is next!

Title:
  Kernels 6.x have a regression for Audio via HDMI

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  [Dell Inspiron 16 7610]

  All kernels of 6.x looks to be missing some port of the bug fix from
  5.19

  before and including kernel 5.15 there was a bug that after locking
  the screen and logging back audio via HDMI was disappearing. Later the
  bug was fixed and definitely not present in 5.19

  However, this bug is present in 6.x kernels included in Lunar and
  Mantic as well as in 6.5.7-060507.202310102154

  Currently I rolled back to 5.19 to confirm that this issue is fixed in
  this kernel.
