[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2058480] Re: [Ubuntu 22.04.4/linux-image-6.5.0-1014-aws] Kernel outputs "UBSAN: array-index-out-of-bounds in /build/linux-aws-6.5-4tw9h1/linux-aws-6.5-6.5.0/drivers/net/xen-netf

2024-03-30 Thread Chris Mounce
This may have already been fixed upstream in December 2023: this commit
to xen-project/xen looks extremely relevant, because it purports to fix
an UBSAN issue with the exact same error text as this issue ("UBSAN:
index 1 is out of range for type 'xen_netif_rx_sring_entry [1]'"):

https://github.com/xen-
project/xen/commit/93d913c6e66e01597681d0a456c1523279218524

I am way out of my depth here, but as I understand it, these xen files
get vendored into the Linux codebase:

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git/commit/?id=125c0a646a257fd58de223f2c3e1fe8a99085644

...and from there, they get copied into the git repos for both Ubuntu's
`linux` and `linux-aws` packages. Here's one of the affected files in
the Jammy LTS repos, and it definitely hasn't been patched because it
was last updated in 2021:

- linux:
https://git.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-kernel/ubuntu/+source/linux/+git/jammy/log/include/xen/interface/io/ring.h
- linux-aws:
https://git.launchpad.net/~canonical-kernel/ubuntu/+source/linux-aws/+git/jammy/log/include/xen/interface/io/ring.h

`dmesg` output just after boot, capturing some of the UBSANs (first one
happens 2 seconds in). I see a few different Call Traces in there.

I am also affected by this. I have an Ubuntu webserver (t2.micro,
22.04.4 LTS (jammy)) that suddenly started having these show up in the
kernel journalctl logs, multiple times at boot time.

Just to be sure I had the latest everything, I ran `apt update`, `apt
upgrade`, and rebooted; the UBSAN error still shows up in the logs.
`uname -r` says I'm running 6.5.0-1016-aws.

The webserver still functions as far as I can tell, but it's definitely
a regression. I created this EC2 instance with 22.04 a couple of months
ago, and it suddenly started happening.

My XPS 13 wakes up from suspend by itself. This is very annoying and
potentially dangerous since it happens while the computer is its sleeve/bag.
Can't tell from the pm-suspend and dmesg what causes the behavior so please
let me know what logs you need to investigate it and I will provide them.

Further note: It seems like the spontaneous wake up is happening
around 40 minutes after suspend every time it occurs. However, the
spontaneous wake up does not occur every time.

backport DIMLIB (lib/dim/) to pre-5.2 kernels

Status in linux source package in Bionic:

Status in linux source package in Disco:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
The mellanox and broadcom drivers contained a "dynamic interrupt
moderation" feature (as early as v5.0) which was broken out into a
common kernel library 'DIMLIB' in lib/dim/ circa mainline v5.2.

Backported drivers may now need DIMLIB to be available in pre-5.2
kernels (specifically, the latest upstream version of
  net/ethernet/amazon/ena does: see bug 1853180).

  For Disco:
Apply all the mainline commits from v5.2 which extract DIMLIB from
mellanox/broadcom and wire those drivers to use DIMLIB (plus a few later DIMLIB
fixes). I.e. make Disco work the same as > 5.2 kernels; no significant
functional change to those drivers.

  For Bionic and Xenial:
Import the lib/dim/ directory from mainline (plus a couple porting
prerequisites), but do *not* make mellanox/broadcom use it. I.e. no functional
change at all.

  ---

  The mainline commits for Disco:
  (newest first)

  f8be17b81d44 lib/dim: Fix -Wunused-const-variable warnings
f06d0ca45827 linux/dim: Fix overflow in dim calculation
f4915455dcf0 linux/dim: Implement RDMA adaptive moderation (DIM)

  398c2b05bbee linux/dim: Add completions count to dim_sample
  4f75da3666c0 linux/dim: Move implementation to .c files
  8960b38932be linux/dim: Rename externally used net_dim members
  e5b6ab02d7aa linux/dim: Rename net_dim_sample() to net_dim_update_sample()
c002bd529d71 linux/dim: Rename externally exposed macros
449986ea9241 linux/dim: Remove "net" prefix from internal DIM members
  0e58983de0d8 linux/dim: Move logic to dim.h

Bug description:
A Xen blkfront(xen-blkfront:) patch has been submitted upstream, regarding
the resizing of a blkfront device from dom0. This patch would emit a
KOBJ_CHANGE uevent, to notify a guest of the change. This allows for custom
udev rules, such
as automatically resizing a filesystem, when an event occurs.

We are requesting that this patch be cherry-picked/backported to the
  supported Ubuntu kernels.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1552592] Re: KVM/QEMU live migration fails with Ubuntu wily kernel 4.2.0-30.35

KVM/QEMU live migration fails with Ubuntu wily kernel 4.2.0-30.35

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid
Status in linux-lts-wily package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress
Status in linux-lts-wily source package in Trusty:

Status in linux source package in Wily:

Bug description:
  commit 3f11933efc9ef55ecb2ac7e6d626e8d05a99a4b1 - "KVM: x86: expose
MSR_TSC_AUX to userspace" from ubuntu-wily master git tree breaks
KVM/QEMU live migration of host with a graphical user interface.

  == Reproduction ==

  Install kernel with 3f11933efc9ef55ecb2ac7e6d626e8d05a99a4b1 included
(Ubuntu-4.2.0-30.35)
  Start VM with GUI
Start migration (no post copy, same migration as you'd in qemu 2.4)
When migration has finished and you switch the VNC over to the migration
target the VM running but frozen showing the last frame buffer, its also not
ping-able (so you ssh session is dead if you used that)

This is independent of (x86_64) Hardware and Guest OS used and also
the QEMU cpu type (I used mainly kvm64).

  == Backport Solution ==

After a reverse bisect on the working 4.4 xenial kernel (where it's
working with the patch from above) I found the missing part.

While those two KVM patches listed above were backported/added another on was
not, namely:
  81b1b9ca6d5ca5f3ce91c0095402def657cf5db3 (from upstream linus)
KVM: VMX: Fix host initiated access to guest MSR_TSC_AUX

https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=81b1b9ca6d5ca5f3ce91c0095402def657cf5db3

As there was a API change I made the rather trivial backport to the
4.2 kernel and tested it successfully.

The backported patch is attached to this report.

  This is a POTENTIAL REGRESSION.

This issue only occurs on one of the AWS testing instance "c3.large"

Reproduce rate: 100% (All jenkins deployment job failed with this
  instance)

  Steps:
    1. Deploy this instance with AWS kernel (4.4.0-1052)
    2. Enable -proposed, upgrade it and reboot.

  Result:
    * System can boot with 4.4.0-1052, but it won't be accessible after
rebooting for 4.4.0-1053, from "aws ec2 get-console-output" command indicates
it hang with kernel panic issue on boot. It looks like the intel-microcode is
causing this issue.

  Output from the command: https://pastebin.ubuntu.com/p/3JvWNk5CTs/
(it's a bit difficult to get full output, the instance will keep
  rebooting itself)

Bug description:
As reported by Alex Thorlton :

This mainline commit (part of the fix for CVE-2019-3016) was
accidentally omitted from Bionic when the rest of that fix was applied

Bug description:
  Hello,

I noticed that kernel which was used in ubuntu 22.04 (hwe-5.13) does
not contain fixes for IO statistics for md devices. IO statistics for
md devices were added to kernel 5.10

but then bug for double fault was reported and this patch was reverted
  by Guoqing Jiang

Guoqing Jiang added series of patches which fixes problem and adds IO stats
for md devices on top on the revert patch:
  - first commit from series: 10764815ff4728d2c57da677cd5d3dd6f446cf5f
(https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=10764815ff4728d2c57da677cd5d3dd6f446cf5f)
  - last one: de3ea66e9d23a34eef5e17f960d6473f78a1c54b
(https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=de3ea66e9d23a34eef5e17f960d6473f78a1c54b)

I checked that kernel used in ubuntu 22.04 contains only patch with revert -
iostat does not report for md devices
(https://kernel.ubuntu.com/git/ubuntu/ubuntu-focal.git/log/?h=hwe-5.13=author=Guoqing+Jiang)
Please consider adding series of patches described above.

  Regards,
  Kinga Tanska

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2057792] Re: Some Games are crashing linked to a vm_max_map_count too low

2024-03-30 Thread vadim
I suggest including 2147483642 not in LTS, but in Ubuntu 24.10 as an
experiment. Because I noticed an unpleasant detail. For example, there
is a game "Don't Starve," I know there is a native version, but this is
just as an experiment with Proton. If you launch the Proton version, you
will receive a message when vm.max_map_count = 1048576:
"steam_app_218740" is not responding. You may choose to wait a short
while for it to continue or force the app to quit entirely. But when
vm.max_map_count = 2147483642, there are no problems, everything loads
instantly.

  Hello there,

I submit this request to improve the gaming experience in ubuntu for all
users.
Today, Hogwarts Legacy, Star Citizen and few more games are crashing or just
not starting because the vm_max_map_count is locked at 65530. If we change this
value to a value > 20, all games are working well and there is no bug
linked to maps.

Some others distribution like Fedora or Pop OS, have already made the
  change few month before.

It's time to Ubuntu to makes the change also.

Thanks in advance for applying this request.

How to make this change :

  One file to modify :
  /etc/sysctl.conf
  Add this line :
  vm.max_map_count=2147483642
  Save
  Reboot and enjoy

  Best Regards
  Vinceff

Can confirm here, did the test and only work with complete PSU power
cycle. Turn of, waited few seconds and then power on again.

Have a Intel AX200 chip and Linux archlinux 6.8.2-arch2-1 #1 SMP

Yes, same here, after normal reboot or shutdown (assuming it happens,
because it also hangs on shutdown/reboot now), it **only** works after
PSU power cycle

Sadly, its short lived. Mine stopped working again after the first

I can also confirm the issue. I tried using latest kernel 6.8.2.arch2-1
on arch linux, and also LTS version 6.6.23-1 and on both I see same
behavior.

$ lsusb | grep -i bluetooth

The behavior is exactly the same as other described.

Wow, indeed, after upgrade powered off my desktop, flipped the PSU
