[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2079246] Re: System hanging at startup after seeing the line "Listening on Load/save RF Kill Switch Status" in console

2024-09-10 Thread Alan AZZERA
I removed the package linux-image-generic-hwe-22.04, the computer runs
perfectly with standard 5.15 kernel.

I removed the Nvidia 8400GS additional card, then reinstalled the linux-
image-generic-hwe-22.04 package. The computer runs perfectly with kernel
6.8.0-40-generic.

I believe one can conclude to an incompatibility between nouveau and
this kernel, probably with old cards only. I hope someone will be able
to fix the problem, as it's very unpleasant and disappointing...

Title:
System hanging at startup after seeing the line "Listening on
Load/save RF Kill Switch Status" in console

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
Hi, the system just hangs. When choosing not to use quiet & splash
options on boot, I can see the last line before complete freeze, which
starts with "Listening on Load/save RF Kill Switch Status". After
that, a hard reboot is needed.

I can boot on previous kernel without problem (linux-
  image-6.5.0-45-generic).

After booting with previous kernel, all I can see in dmesg, near the end, is :
[ 20.115597] nouveau :01:00.0: Direct firmware load for
nouveau/nv98_fuc084 failed with error -2
[ 20.115640] nouveau :01:00.0: Direct firmware load for

  [ 20.115646] nouveau :01:00.0: msvld: init failed, -19

I'm not skilled enough to say whether it's relevant or not.

My computer is an old HP 6200 MT with Intel Core i7-2600 and a Nvidia
Geforce 8400GS additional graphic card. If I can help furthermore by
providing any additional information, I will do it.

[ 20.115640] nouveau :01:00.0: Direct firmware load for
nouveau/nv98_fuc084d failed with error -2
[ 20.115643] nouveau :01:00.0: msvld: unable to load firmware data
  [ 20.115646] nouveau :01:00.0: msvld: init failed, -19

I'm not skilled enough to say whether it's relevant or not.

My computer is an old HP 6200 MT with Intel Core i7-2600 and a Nvidia
Geforce 8400GS additional graphic card. If I can help furthermore by
providing any additional information, I will do it.

I found two topis on the web where similar issues are reported :

I found two topis on the web where similar issues are reported :

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2079246] Re: System hanging at startup after seeing the line "Listening on Load/save RF Kill Switch Status" in console

2024-09-06 Thread Alan AZZERA
I can't boot with 6.8 kernel, whether the "quiet splash" options are
activated or not.

As I wrote, everything is fine with previous 6.5 kernel. I get the
"Direct firmware load for nouveau/nv98_fuc084 failed with error -2" line
in dmesg after a normal boot process with this kernel. I installed the
nouveau-firmware package, without any effect. I thus purged it.

Would it be useful to run "apport-collect 2079246" with the 6.5 kernel ?
I don't think so, but as I said, I'm not skilled enough to be sure of
that...

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1876632] Re: [nvidia] Corrupted shell textures when switching users or resuming from suspend

2021-08-10 Thread Alan AZZERA
Same problem occurs for me with nvidia-driver-470. The graphical effect
/ issue is a bit different, yet. See attached pic... My Ubuntu 20.04 is
as up-to-date as possible.

The last suggested solution is working for me (restarting gnome-shell),
but this is still annoying... I've just read this :
https://www.reddit.com/r/gnome/comments/k5ea3g/text_and_icon_glitching_out_after_resuming_from/
so it seems we won't have any solution before quite a long time... Fed
up with nvidia !

I can't as I'm already at the latest version. Is there a way to prevent
these messages to fill the logs ?

Title:
[Lenovo laptop] Fail to completely boot with kernel 4.15.0-32-generic

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
Hi, my girlfriend was told yesterday it was time to upgrade from 16.04
  to 18.04. Her computer is a Lenovo Ideapad 700-17ISK 80RV (Core i7
6700HQ with 16 GB RAM, a NVIDIA GeForce 940M embedded graphic card and
  a Samsung SSD 830).

The upgrade process ran fluently but the disaster came after : the
laptop is unable to complete boot process. There is no more graphical
login screen. I searched a bit and found various tips, mainly
  recommanding to disable Wayland

but it does not work for me.

I tried the recovery mode, and I can confirm that using directly the
resume option conveniently leads to a graphical login screen. Odd
thing : I have twice the recovery menu (and I need to validate twice
the resume entry to complete the startup process).

  I also tried other kernels (4.15.0-30, -29, -24 and -23 versions),
that fluently leads to the graphical login screen, but completely
lacks basic modules for networking (no r8169 nor iwlmvm modules, thus
  making the computer completely unusable).

There are also other problems, which are perhaps not related to the Linux
kernel / package. For example :
  - the keyboard shortcuts for adjusting brightness are not functional with any
of the kernel I tried, 4.15.0-32-generic included ;
  - there is no simple way to suspend the computer (no option directly
reachable - ergonomic fail - and closing the screen only make the screen black)
and when configuring the power button action to suspend the computer, there is
no way to recover (the screen remains black - no more pm-suspend command
available but systemctl suspend ends the same way). A hard poweroff is needed
(several seconds pressing the poweroff button).

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1788361] Re: [Lenovo laptop] Fail to completely boot with kernel 4.15.0-32-generic

2018-08-22 Thread Alan AZZERA
After all, it seems that my problems entirely came from the nvidia
packages (proprietary driver) that was left broken by the 16.04 to 18.04
update process.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1788361] Re: [Lenovo laptop] Fail to completely boot with kernel 4.15.0-32-generic

2018-08-22 Thread Alan AZZERA
Hey, Ubuntu Team bot, your apport-collect 1788361 command does not work.
After logging in Launchpad from a terminal browser (probably Lynx), I
got this message :

No REFERER Header

Launchpad requires a REFERER header to perform this action. There is
no REFERER header present. This can be caused by configuring your
browser to block REFERER headers.

Unblock REFERER headers for launchpad.net and try again, or see the
FAQ Why does Launchpad require a REFERER header? for more information.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1788361] Re: [Lenovo laptop] Fail to completely boot with kernel 4.15.0-32-generic

2018-08-22 Thread Alan AZZERA
The machine perfectly boots up with gdm3 and Wayland after removing the
broken nvidia packages. I will now try to reinstall these packages...

  - the keyboard shortcuts for adjusting brightness are not functional with any
of the kernel I tried, 4.15.0-32-generic included ;

Okay Ubuntu Team bot, but I'ver realized that the nvidia packages were
silently left broken by your update process (not fair !). When
suppressing these packages, re-deactivating Wayland and moving from gdm3
to lightdm, I finally got a working machine. Will now try to go back to
Wayland and gdm3 to determine where is exactly the bug.

Title:
USB to Ethernet adapter not working on USB 3 port but OK on USB 2 port

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Hello,

my new laptop is a Dell XPS 11, with no ethernet port. So I bought an
USB to Ethernet adapter. It also has two more USB 3 ports. When
connected on my laptop, I'm unable to acquire an IP through my DHCP,
but a new network interface is automatically raised. I tried to set
manually an IP, but I cannot ping any system which normally honors
ping requests. The surprising point is that when I connect the same
adapter on an old laptop (Dell E4300), running the same version of
Ubuntu 14.04 (both systems are fully up-to-date), it perfectly works !
The only difference I can see is that my old laptop has only USB 2
  ports...

Additionally, the USB hub works on both computers, and I connected the
adapter to 2 desktop computers :
  - one with an additional USB 3 card : it works ;
  - one with embedded USB 3 port : same error as with the modern laptop.

So it really seems to be a problem related to the way USB 3 is handled
by Ubuntu 14.04, but perhaps only with some specific chipsets. I
cannot find what chipset is on the mainboard of my laptop (it is an
Intel one, for sure, since the CPU is a Core i5-4210Y), but my desktop
PC as an Intel Z97 chipset.

Here is what I read tailing kern.log when connecting the adapter. Note the
errors near the end :
