HP Elitebook 6930p, Intel graphics, with fully updated Ubuntu Wily and kernel 3.19.0-17 also freezes early in the boot. It appears to happen just as the low resolution display changes to higher resolution. Booting in recovery mode results in low resolution display. Boots 3.16.0-6 amd64 fine, runs compiz 3D fine. Today's amd64 iso download, 20 August, boots to desktop cursor. No unity. Did ubuntu-bug from command line on the booted iso, saved report. Booted 3.10.0-6 and ran ubuntu-bug apport on the saved file. Planet Ubuntu asked for results on 3.16.0-9 so this is my result. Just to add my findings to this, the i915 fault also appears on a Ubuntu-Mate install but apparently recovers from it to log-in and run correctly. With laptop using same Intel graphics as above I get the same effect (wallpaper only after log in). This system has been regularly updated since start of 14.10.
