[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1453593] Re: 3.19.0-17 freeze

2015-05-14 Thread Alan Fry
HP Elitebook 6930p, Intel graphics, with fully updated Ubuntu Wily and
kernel 3.19.0-17 also freezes early in the boot. It appears to happen
just as the low resolution display changes to higher resolution.

Booting in recovery mode results in low resolution display.

Kernel 3.19.0-16 is OK as is mainline 3.19.6

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1359299] Re: utopic 3.16.0-9 iso boots to desktop no unity

2014-09-02 Thread Alan Fry
Regret that kernel 3.16.0-12 does NOT reliably resolve this problem.

See post #30 above. I get exactly the same result with the -12 kernel.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1359299] Re: utopic 3.16.0-9 iso boots to desktop no unity

2014-09-01 Thread Alan Fry
Just to add my findings to this, the i915 fault also appears on a
Ubuntu-Mate install but apparently recovers from it to log-in and run
correctly.

Fully working boot using 3.13.0-34.60 kernel, otherwise fully updated Ubuntu
Utopic
alan@alan-ubuntu:~$ grep -i i915 /var/log/dmesg
[4.188060] i915 :00:02.0: irq 46 for MSI/MSI-X
[5.535026] i915 :00:02.0: fb0: inteldrmfb frame buffer device

[5.558936] [drm] Initialized i915 1.6.0 20080730 for :00:02.0 on minor 0
(Conclusion - No i915 failure with old, non current kernel)

alan@alan-ubuntu:~$
Failed boot on same install using 3.16.0-11.16 kernel
[4.435951] i915 :00:02.0: irq 48 for MSI/MSI-X
[4.587670] [drm:i915_gem_init] *ERROR* Failed to initialize GPU, declaring

[4.794288] [drm] Initialized i915 1.6.0 20080730 for :00:02.0 on minor 0
(Conclusion - i915 failure with current kernel. Boot fails to 'wallpaper only'
after login.)

Working boot on Ubuntu-Mate install, same machine, using 3.16.0-11.16 kernel
alan@Ubuntu-Mate:~$ grep -i i915 /var/log/dmesg
[7.964054] i915 :00:02.0: irq 47 for MSI/MSI-X

[9.394907] [drm] Initialized i915 1.6.0 20080730 for :00:02.0 on minor 0
alan@Ubuntu-Mate:~$
(Conclusion - i915 failure with current kernel but system apparently recovers
to work normally)
