[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2055153] Re: [Lenovo Legion Pro 7 16IRX8H] Boots slowly or not at all when NVIDIA driver is installed

2024-03-04 Thread Alvin Jinsung Choi
@Fabian Gasser
After setting kernel parameter 'acpi_backlight=vendor' in /etc/default/grub
file, the problem did not appear again until now. I will let you know if it
happens again

@Daniel Van Vugt
May I ask what 'acpi_backlight=vendor' do?

Bug description:
I have booting related issue everytime I install NVIDIA-driver on
Ubuntu 22.04 So the main problem is everytime I boot, Ubuntu would
  either

  (1) boot fine (25% of the time)
  (2) boot takes long time(about 2 min) (50% of the time)
  (3) boot fails (25% of the time)

This symptom disappears when I uninstall NVIDIA driver so I'm pretty
sure it is related to NVIDIA driver but I don't know how to fix it.

For case (2) (boot takes long time), black screen with

  '/dev/nvme0n1p6: clean, *** files, *** blocks'

  hang for a long time.

For case (3) (boot fails), blackscreen with

  'iwlwifi : invalid buffer destination'
'ACPI BIOS Error (bug): could not resolve symbol [\_TZ.ETMD], AE NOT_FOUND'
'ACPI Error: Aborting method \_SB.IETM._OSC due to previos error
(AE_NOT_FOUND)'
'Bluetooth: hci0: Malformed MSFT vendor event: 0x02'
'INFO: task plymouthd: *** blocked for more than *** seconds'
  '"echo 0 > /prc/sys/kernel/hung_task_timeout_secs" disables this message'
'INFO: task gpu-manager: *** blocked for more than *** seconds'
  '"echo 0 > /prc/sys/kernel/hung_task_timeout_secs" disables this message'

This screen appears and doesn't boot or blackscreen with cursor
appears and doesn't boot. It happens quite randomly and it really is
frustrating and want to resolve this issue. I've tried various things
but it didn't work out. Here are some things I tried

  - deleting and reinstalling NVIDIA driver with 'purge, autoremove, apt
install'
  - Installing different driver version(525, 535, 545)
  - trying boot-repair program
  - disabling nouveau by modifying /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
  - 'nomodeset' by modifying /etc/default/grub (made it worse.. all boot
fails)
  - tried various kernel version with various Ubuntu version (my laptop is very
new device so 20.04 had issues with touchpad, wifi, etc, therefore I mainly
tried 22.04)

However none of them seemed to resolve the problem I am facing. It
showed different symptoms time-to-time but mostly all of them were
boot-related. I am using a dualboot with windows

I am kind of lost and kindly ask for help. Here are some of the
  specification that would be helpful

Bug description:
I have booting related issue everytime I install NVIDIA-driver on
Ubuntu 22.04 So the main problem is everytime I boot, Ubuntu would
  either

  (1) boot fine (25% of the time)
  (2) boot takes long time(about 2 min) (50% of the time)
  (3) boot fails (25% of the time)

This symptom disappears when I uninstall NVIDIA driver so I'm pretty
sure it is related to NVIDIA driver but I don't know how to fix it.

For case (2) (boot takes long time), black screen with

  '/dev/nvme0n1p6: clean, *** files, *** blocks'

  hang for a long time.

For case (3) (boot fails), blackscreen with

  'iwlwifi : invalid buffer destination'
'ACPI BIOS Error (bug): could not resolve symbol [\_TZ.ETMD], AE NOT_FOUND'
'ACPI Error: Aborting method \_SB.IETM._OSC due to previos error
(AE_NOT_FOUND)'
'Bluetooth: hci0: Malformed MSFT vendor event: 0x02'
'INFO: task plymouthd: *** blocked for more than *** seconds'
  '"echo 0 > /prc/sys/kernel/hung_task_timeout_secs" disables this message'
'INFO: task gpu-manager: *** blocked for more than *** seconds'
  '"echo 0 > /prc/sys/kernel/hung_task_timeout_secs" disables this message'

This screen appears and doesn't boot or blackscreen with cursor
appears and doesn't boot. It happens quite randomly and it really is
frustrating and want to resolve this issue. I've tried various things
but it didn't work out. Here are some things I tried

  - deleting and reinstalling NVIDIA driver with 'purge, autoremove, apt
install'
  - Installing different driver version(525, 535, 545)
  - trying boot-repair program
  - disabling nouveau by modifying /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
  - 'nomodeset' by modifying /etc/default/grub (made it worse.. all boot
fails)
  - tried various kernel version with various Ubuntu version (my laptop is very
new device so 20.04 had issues with touchpad, wifi, etc, therefore I mainly
tried 22.04)

However none of them seemed to resolve the problem I am facing. It
showed different symptoms time-to-time but mostly all of them were
boot-related. I am using a dualboot with windows

Bug description:
I have booting related issue everytime I install NVIDIA-driver on
Ubuntu 22.04 So the main problem is everytime I boot, Ubuntu would
  either

  (1) boot fine (25% of the time)
  (2) boot takes long time(about 2 min) (50% of the time)
  (3) boot fails (25% of the time)

This symptom disappears when I uninstall NVIDIA driver so I'm pretty
sure it is related to NVIDIA driver but I don't know how to fix it.

For case (2) (boot takes long time), black screen with

  '/dev/nvme0n1p6: clean, *** files, *** blocks'

  hang for a long time.

For case (3) (boot fails), blackscreen with

  'iwlwifi : invalid buffer destination'
'ACPI BIOS Error (bug): could not resolve symbol [\_TZ.ETMD], AE NOT_FOUND'
'ACPI Error: Aborting method \_SB.IETM._OSC due to previos error
(AE_NOT_FOUND)'
'Bluetooth: hci0: Malformed MSFT vendor event: 0x02'
'INFO: task plymouthd: *** blocked for more than *** seconds'
  '"echo 0 > /prc/sys/kernel/hung_task_timeout_secs" disables this message'
'INFO: task gpu-manager: *** blocked for more than *** seconds'
  '"echo 0 > /prc/sys/kernel/hung_task_timeout_secs" disables this message'

This screen appears and doesn't boot or blackscreen with cursor
appears and doesn't boot. It happens quite randomly and it really is
frustrating and want to resolve this issue. I've tried various things
but it didn't work out. Here are some things I tried

  - deleting and reinstalling NVIDIA driver with 'purge, autoremove, apt
install'
  - Installing different driver version(525, 535, 545)
  - trying boot-repair program
  - disabling nouveau by modifying /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
  - 'nomodeset' by modifying /etc/default/grub (made it worse.. all boot
fails)
  - tried various kernel version with various Ubuntu version (my laptop is very
new device so 20.04 had issues with touchpad, wifi, etc, therefore I mainly
tried 22.04)

However none of them seemed to resolve the problem I am facing. It
showed different symptoms time-to-time but mostly all of them were
boot-related. I am using a dualboot with windows

I am kind of lost and kindly ask for help. Here are some of the
  specification that would be helpful

I tried to run the command

ubuntu-bug /var/crash/YOURFILE.crash

as you proposed but it is not working.
It shows 'The application Files has closed unexpectedly'

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2055153] Re: [Lenovo Legion Pro 7 16IRX8H] Boots slowly or not at all when NVIDIA driver is installed

2024-02-28 Thread Alvin Jinsung Choi
There seems _usr_bin_nautilus.1000.crash file exist in /var/crash. Are
you saying to open up new bug report(not this page) with the file
attached? Also I checked /etc/gdm3/custom.conf not enabled. Do I still
need to enable the debug section?

Bug description:
I have booting related issue everytime I install NVIDIA-driver on
Ubuntu 22.04 So the main problem is everytime I boot, Ubuntu would
  either

  (1) boot fine (25% of the time)
  (2) boot takes long time(about 2 min) (50% of the time)
  (3) boot fails (25% of the time)

This symptom disappears when I uninstall NVIDIA driver so I'm pretty
sure it is related to NVIDIA driver but I don't know how to fix it.

For case (2) (boot takes long time), black screen with

  '/dev/nvme0n1p6: clean, *** files, *** blocks'

  hang for a long time.

For case (3) (boot fails), blackscreen with

  'iwlwifi : invalid buffer destination'
'ACPI BIOS Error (bug): could not resolve symbol [\_TZ.ETMD], AE NOT_FOUND'
'ACPI Error: Aborting method \_SB.IETM._OSC due to previos error
(AE_NOT_FOUND)'

'INFO: task plymouthd: *** blocked for more than *** seconds'
  '"echo 0 > /prc/sys/kernel/hung_task_timeout_secs" disables this message'
'INFO: task gpu-manager: *** blocked for more than *** seconds'
  '"echo 0 > /prc/sys/kernel/hung_task_timeout_secs" disables this message'

This screen appears and doesn't boot or blackscreen with cursor
appears and doesn't boot. It happens quite randomly and it really is
frustrating and want to resolve this issue. I've tried various things
but it didn't work out. Here are some things I tried

  - deleting and reinstalling NVIDIA driver with 'purge, autoremove, apt
install'
  - Installing different driver version(525, 535, 545)
  - trying boot-repair program
  - disabling nouveau by modifying /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
  - 'nomodeset' by modifying /etc/default/grub (made it worse.. all boot
fails)
  - tried various kernel version with various Ubuntu version (my laptop is very
new device so 20.04 had issues with touchpad, wifi, etc, therefore I mainly
tried 22.04)

However none of them seemed to resolve the problem I am facing. It
showed different symptoms time-to-time but mostly all of them were
boot-related. I am using a dualboot with windows

I am kind of lost and kindly ask for help. Here are some of the
  specification that would be helpful

Bug description:
  [SRU Justification]

  BugLink: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2024427

  [Impact]

Under stress testing it was reported that the amdgpu Navi31/Navi33 platforms
will sometimes fail to wake from S3.

  [Fix]

  kernel patches:
ac2f5739fdca drm/amdgpu/mes11: enable reg active poll
  a2fe4534bb38 drm/amd/amdgpu: update mes11 api def
  da9a8dc33da2 drm/amdgpu: reserve the old gc_11_0_*_mes.bin
  616843d5a11b drm/amd/amdgpu: introduce gc_*_mes_2.bin v2
09bf14907d86 drm/amdgpu: declare firmware for new MES 11.0.4

  firmware patches:
  * Navi31: ffe1a41e2ddb amdgpu: update GC 11.0.0 firmware for amd.5.5 release
  * Navi33: a5d7b4df1a76 amdgpu: update GC 11.0.2 firmware for amd.5.5 release

  [Test Case]

  $ checkbox-cli run com.canonical.certification::stress-
  suspend-30-cycles-with-reboots-automated

  [Where problems could occur]

Little we know about the firmware fixes. However, while with these commits
have
been pulled via stable kernel fixes, the driver begins to request new firmware
  blobs of a different filename.

  [Other Info]

The kernel driver commits are in v6.4-rc1, backported to v6.3.4, v6.1.31, and
  partially (missing da9a8dc33da2, 616843d5a11b) v6.2.16. Only linux/lunar has
to
  be fixed.

For the firmware parts, they have been included in linux-firmware/mantic,
leaving linux-firmware/lunar and linux-firmware/jammy to be fixed.

The fix is in Linux 5.19.10.

  [Other Info]
The keyboard worked when using a linux kernel 5.19.10 (in debian testing). I
tried to patch the kernel on the ubuntu live CD
ubuntu-22.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso, but the live filesystem could not be mounted
and I only got the busybox environment. The keyboard was working though.

2017-11-20 Thread Alvin Cao
Hi.

linux-image-4.11.12-041112-generic_4.11.12-041112.201707210350_amd64.deb
worked while linux-
image-4.12.14-041214-generic_4.12.14-041214.201709200843_amd64.deb
failed. Both kernels are the latest build in their major series. So this
bug was introduced in v4.12.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1730305] Re: 17.10 boot failure on Lenovo ThinkStation S30

2017-11-06 Thread Alvin Cao
Update:

I tried the following:

1. Fresh installed 17.04 with kernel 4.10, everything was OK.
2. Installed
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.13.11/linux-image-4.13.11-041311-generic_4.13.11-041311.201711020532_amd64.deb,
boot failure and the same error log.
3. Installed
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.14-rc8/linux-image-4.14.0-041400rc8-generic_4.14.0-041400rc8.201711052313_amd64.deb,
boot failure and the same error log.

So apparently it's only about the kernel, nothing to do with Ubuntu
version. If there is anything else I can help, let me know.

I don't have any bootable kernel on the machine since it's fresh installation.
Can I install another kernel? If yes, could provide some instructions? Thanks.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 227359] Re: suddenly keyboard event recognition gets really slow after multiple suspend/resumes

2017-03-30 Thread Alvin P. Schmitt
I am a semi-newbie. I get the problem of keys being echoed to the screen
many seconds after I type them. I am running on a 32 bit machine at 2.6
GHz processor and 4 GB ram. This is with Ubuntu 16.04 and with all the
updates as of 3/30/2017. This is a real problem and is not related to
any of the so called solutions I see posted. I set swappiness = 10 .
Has anyone found a real solution to this problem?

Title:
suddenly keyboard event recognition gets really slow after multiple
  suspend/resumes

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: xorg

If I use Xorg for some time (I mean over suspend & resumes, after
several hours), suddenly the keyboard gets unusable.

I.e. I have to press a key for 2 seconds or more to get an keyboard
event under Xorg - and then it is duplicated. But if I press it less
then 2 seconds, then I don't get any event at all.

The problem shows with Kde unter Xorg with Hardy. Under Gutsy I had
the same problem. The problem occurs both with the internal and an
  external usb keyboard.

As workaround I log out (via mouse which works fine) - and restart the
X-Server. The new X-Server works fine then for some time, until the
  problem occurs again.

I have no problems with keys which are 'stuck' or something like that.

Bug description:
Using latest Ubuntu Gnome x64 daily build with all updates installed.
Lenovo Z70-80 laptop with Nvidia 840M, BIOS updated to latest version, secure
boot and other potentially problematic BIOS settings disabled.

Can only see a black screen instead of a log-in screen after boot completes
when proprietary Nvidia drivers are installed.
Regular Ubuntu works absolutely fine on the same machine with the same driver
version. Attempting to use older drivers on Ubuntu Gnome made no difference.

Bug is affecting more than just me. We were talking about workarounds
in ubuntuforums. User fthx claims that switching to lightdm fixes the
  issue

I take that back. It is not fixed, but it does appear much less. Instead
of constantly filling the logs, it took a while after switching to
kernel 4.3.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1335750] Re: [Lenovo ThinkPad X131e] Bluetooth can't load firmware after wakeup

2014-07-03 Thread Alvin
A new kernel (3.16.0-031600rc3-generic) does make a difference. Bluetooth now
works again after wakeup, but still complains about firmware that can't be
loaded.
(On an slightly related note. The bluetooth card is a combo wifi/bluetooth, and
the new kernel does not support the wifi due to the missing nonfree 'wl'
module. DKSM bcmwl-6.30.223.141+bdcom could not be built.)

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1335750] Re: Bluetooth can't load firmware after wakeup

2014-07-02 Thread Alvin
Thank you. Here is the requested output after doing a BIOS upgrade.
  G8ET97WW (2.57 )
  05/21/2014

The BIOS only contained changed security parameters. The problem remains
the same. Bluetooth works (mouse + headset), but on wakeup, the firmware
can't be loaded.
