[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1548558] [NEW] Unable to install dracut and initramfs-tools together

2016-02-22 Thread Antony Messerli
Public bug reported:

In 15.10, dracut and initramfs-tools cannot coexist which makes it hard
to regenerate the initramfs.

root@builder:/# apt-get install dracut initramfs-tools
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
initramfs-tools is already the newest version.
initramfs-tools set to manually installed.
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
dracut : Conflicts: initramfs-tools but 0.120ubuntu6 is to be installed
 initramfs-tools : Conflicts: linux-initramfs-tool
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

>From https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1109029:

"Just in case someone is interested: I've built an ppa that allows installing
draucut next to initramfs:
https://launchpad.net/~morty/+archive/ubuntu/dracut-release

And yes, they do conflict as they both want to build the init.rd. And
initramfs-tools wins, because i comes after d. I fixed that using dpkg-
divert."

** Affects: dracut (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

** Package changed: linux (Ubuntu) => dracut (Ubuntu)

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1109029] Re: Depend on linux-initramfs-tool

2015-12-23 Thread Antony Messerli
I tried out Morty's PPA and it works great. It gets rid of the conflict
between dracut and initramfs-tools in Wily.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1482304] Re: Upgrade i40e and i40evf driver to latest

2015-08-25 Thread Antony Messerli
Is version 1.2.2 of i40e something that could be backported to Trusty?

I had also opened
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1476393 to add the
driver to the installer but I think the built in driver (0.3.36-k) is so
old it could cause issues when installing on that card.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1482304] Re: Upgrade i40e and i40evf driver to latest

2015-08-18 Thread Antony Messerli
So I ended up upgrading the NVM to the latest version (f4.33.31377 a1.2
n4.42 e191b):

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/24769/NVM-Update-Utility-for-
Intel-Ethernet-Converged-Network-Adapter-XL710-X710-Series

The 0.3.36-k now refuses to work at all throwing these messages into
dmesg (no random kernel panic with the latest NVM, just doesn't work at
all):

[1.602924] i40e: Intel(R) Ethernet Connection XL710 Network Driver -

I then installed linux-generic-lts-vivid and that works without issue:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1482304] [NEW] Upgrade i40e and i40evf driver to latest

2015-08-06 Thread Antony Messerli
Public bug reported:

It appears that the latest i40e driver in Trusty is 0.3.36-k. We've
been experiencing some kernel panics with this driver and have found
that it looks like bringing the driver up to the latest 1.2.48 has
alleviated some of the kernel panics on boot.

Is this something we could look at getting upgraded to a more modern
revision of the driver?

Thanks

I wasn't able to get the Wily ISO booting, as it was trying and failing
on a login loop during boot.

Bug description:
The installer initrd is missing the i40e modules for ethernet cards
like the Intel X710. I was able to grab the latest from Intel's site,
compile the driver, respin the initrd, and get the installer to work:

  https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/24411/Network-Adapter-
  Driver-for-PCI-E-40-Gigabit-Network-Connections-under-Linux-

Can we include the i40e module into nic-modules so that the debian-
installer netboot kernels will work on this card?

  Thanks,

This occurs within the installer. I can provide logs post install with
hacked drivers in if necessary.
