[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2006458] Re: Frequent wakeups on HP Pro x360 435 13.3 inch G9 using Qualcomm FastConnect 6900

2023-02-13 Thread Carsten Hatger
Hi Mario,

This is exactly what I was thinking of when reviewing the timing of
wakeup events occurring on my system. My first assumption was like
this:
1. system fw check battery actual charging level, target charging
level and charging rate
2. system fw compute compute estimated arrival at target charging level
3. sleep until arrival at charging level
4. wake up
5. goto 1

Such an approach will eventually converge to "oszillate" around target
charging level which can be proved by the systems wake up logs.

Anyway, I still don't get why upgrading the wifi-cards firmware to a
more recent version fixes the problem.

Would you mind to elaborate on this a bit more?

Thanks,
Carsten

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1801743] Re: Suspend fails in Kubuntu 18.04 but works fine in Kubuntu 17.10

2018-11-07 Thread Carsten Gräser
The mainline kernel indeed seems to fix the issue: Not a single failed
suspend/resume cycle since using 4.19.1.

Suspend fails in Kubuntu 18.04 but works fine in Kubuntu 17.10

Bug description:
After upgrading to kubuntu 18.04 resuming from suspend fails in most

but the screen stays black and the system does not respond at all.
Switching to another virtual terminal is not possible and closing the
lid again does not show any effect. The hardware is a Dell Latitude

  persists with this kernel.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1801743] Re: Suspend fails in Kubuntu 18.04 but works fine in Kubuntu 17.10

2018-11-05 Thread Carsten Gräser
Yes the issue did not happen prior to the update to 18.04. But I don't
know if there was a prior kernel in 18.04 where the issue did not occur,
because it's not happening 100% of the time. Still a successful resume
is rare.

I'll give the mainline kernel a try.

Title:
Suspend fails in Kubuntu 18.04 but works fine in Kubuntu 17.10

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
After upgrading to kubuntu 18.04 resuming from suspend fails in most
cases on my laptop. When trying to resume the power LED is turned on,
but the screen stays black and the system does not respond at all.
Switching to another virtual terminal is not possible and closing the
lid again does not show any effect. The hardware is a Dell Latitude
e7440 with core i7 4600U and intel graphics only. The only way to
change the status is a hard shut-down by long pressing the power
button. The last message in kern.log is:

  PM: suspend entry (deep)

The described problem is similar to bug #1774950. However, the latter
is considered to be fixed with kernel 4.15.0-38 while my problem
  persists with this kernel.

Output of 'sudo lspci -vnvn' is attached, the result of 'cat
  /proc/version_signature' is:

Suspend fails in Kubuntu 18.04 but works fine in Kubuntu 17.10

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
After upgrading to kubuntu 18.04 resuming from suspend fails in most
cases on my laptop. When trying to resume the power LED is turned on,

Switching to another virtual terminal is not possible and closing the

Systems with acpi-lpss can't do S3/S4 on Bionic.

  [Test]
Users confirmed these patches work for them.

  [Fix]
Commit a192aa923b66a (ACPI / LPSS: Consolidate runtime PM and system
sleep handling) applies quirks for both runtime and system suspend.
This causes problems for some systems, so avoid using quirks on S3 and
  S4.

  [Regression Potential]
Low. These patches are in upstream stable, and it brings back driver's
  old behavior.

  ===Original Bug Report===
I have installed Kubuntu 18.04 on 3 different machines (my friend's and my
own) with no suspend problems but my HP Pavilion 11 x360 does not suspend.

It suspends fine with Ubuntu 17.10, Kubuntu 17.10, Devuan Jesse,
Devuan ASCII and Windows 10 but fails with Ubuntu 18.04 and Kubuntu
  18.04.

I have also tried suspend using a live USB of 18.04 on this machine
and it fails in the same way, so does not appear to be caused by any
additional programs that I had installed.

By installing an older kernel (4.14) on Kubuntu 18.04 the suspend
  function works as expected.

Running Kubuntu 18.04 with kernels 4.15, 4.16, 4.17 results in the
suspend failure that freezes the machine and requires a hard reset.

  Correct behaviour is -

Screen goes blank, fan goes off, power LED flashes to show machine is
in suspend. Pressing power button triggers 'resume' function.

  What happens -

Screen goes blank, fan stays on, power LED stays on. Machine stays in
this state and does not respond to any keyboard interaction, mouse
  movement or power button presses.

Ctrl + Alt + f1 (or f2, f3, f4 etc) does not get any response.

The only way to use the machine is to shut down by holding down the
  power button.

Checking the logs suggests that the machine believes it is in suspend
mode sleep [deep] when it isn't.

Having to hard reset to get any response means that the kernel logs
say no more than sleep [deep]

pm-suspend also results in the same problems with kernels 4.15 and
4.16, but works fine with 4.14.

It is curious that a machine that suspends fine on an earlier 4.14
kernel no longer works with 4.15 and above, whilst 3 other machines
(including one with pretty similar hardware) do not exhibit this
  problem.

There are only a handful of questions about it on the forums but at
least 3 other people have the same problem:

  https://askubuntu.com/questions/1029405/ubuntu-18-04-crashes-on-
  resuming-from-suspend

  https://askubuntu.com/questions/1041369/after-upgrading-
  from-17-10-ubuntu-18-04-wont-sleep-suspend

I am attempting to round up anyone else with the same issue and point
  them to this bug report.

My laptop is HP Pavilion x360 11-n013na
  Matalaks is Acer Aspire ES1-511
  collisionTwo has XPS 9560

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1801743] [NEW] Suspend fails in Kubuntu 18.04 but works fine in Kubuntu 17.10

2018-11-05 Thread Carsten Gräser
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to kubuntu 18.04 resuming from suspend fails in most
cases on my laptop. When trying to resume the power LED is turned on,
but the screen stays black and the system does not respond at all.
Switching to another virtual terminal is not possible and closing the
lid again does not show any effect. The hardware is a Dell Latitude
e7440 with core i7 4600U and intel graphics only. The only way to change
the status is a hard shut-down by long pressing the power button. The
last message in kern.log is:

PM: suspend entry (deep)

The described problem is similar to bug #1774950. However, the latter is
considered to be fixed with kernel 4.15.0-38 while my problem persists
with this kernel.

Output of 'sudo lspci -vnvn' is attached, the result of 'cat
/proc/version_signature' is:

Ubuntu 4.15.0-38.41-generic 4.15.18

2018-11-01 Thread Carsten Gräser
My Dell Latitude e7440 (core i7 4600U, intel graphics) shows a similar
behaviour after updating to 18.04:

Wake-up after suspend often fails with power LED on. Hard shut down
seems to be the only way to recover. Sometimes, additionally to this,
suspend seems to incomplete in the sense that the laptop gets hot and
the fan is running. The last entry in kern.log during the failing
suspend is:

  PM: suspend entry (deep)

While the issue shows up often, I did not figure out how to
deterministically triggers it.

I'm using the current kernel 4.15.0-38. Should this one contain the
above discussed fix?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1740923] Re: package linux-image-4.13.0-21-generic (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 1

2018-01-04 Thread Carsten Lange
Problem occurs on Pentium M with PAE bug.
Solved by adding forcepae to grub and grub-update. After that sudo apt-get
install -f worked.
Before this update forcepae was not needed.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1734147] Re: Ubuntu 17.10 corrupting BIOS - many LENOVO laptops models

2017-12-22 Thread Carsten Depping
There is a new bios update for the ThinkPad Yoga S1 available under
https://support.lenovo.com/de/de/downloads/ds038335. Could this have any
relation to our bios problems?

  SRU Justification

Impact: Many users are reporting issues with bios corruption with
17.10. This seems to stem from enabling the intel-spi-* drivers in the
kernel, which don't appear to be ready for use on end-user machines.

  Fix: Disable this driver.

Test Case: Fix has been verified by our HWE team on affected hardware.

Regression Potential: Minimal, it's unlikely anyone is actually doing
  anything which requires this driver.

  Hi all,

Basically on Lenovo Y50-70 after installing Ubuntu 17.10, many users
  reported a corrupted BIOS.

It's not possible to save new settings in BIOS anymore and after
rebooting, the system starts with the old settings.

Moreover (and most important) USB booting is not possible anymore
since USB is not recognized. It's very serious, since our machines do
  not have a CDROM.

Lenovo forums at the moment are full of topics regading this issue.

  Thank you!!

This update just arrived on my ThinkPad Yoga S1, but sadly it didn't
change anything. Still bios changes disappear after booting Xubuntu

  Hello folks,

After upgrading to Ubuntu Trusty (14.04), I cannot more resume from a

If I boot previous kernel 3.11.0-23, everything works well.

  Also I've tried these kernels:

  vanilla 3.13.0-rc1 (Bugged)
  vanilla 3.12.22 (Working)

I also noted if I suspend from lightdm menu (on 3.13.0-rc1), I can
resume after, but If I do this after logged with my user (not root), I
am unable to resume from suspend.

I cannot perform Sysrq magic keys, I can only press the power button.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1315435] Re: Dell Inspiron 1525 - suspend/resume failure

2014-05-28 Thread Carsten Wehmeier
The bug is still present in the updated kernel 3.13.0-27-generic.
Mainline kernel 3.12.20-031220-generic works without problems. But it's
a bit uncomfortable and unsecure to update the mainline kernel manually,
so I hope the bug will be fixed soon.

  Dell Inspiron 1525 - suspend/resume failure

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
When laptop is in standby and lid is opened, the screen remains black

This bug was not present in previous installed Ubuntu 13.10.

Resuming from standby works in most cases with a standby hook which
kills pulseaudio and unloads the module snd_hda_intel before standby

cases the computer doesn't go to standby when I close the lid with

When I boot Ubuntu 14.04 with Saucy kernel 3.11.0-19-generic or
mainline kernel 3.12.18-031218-generic for trusty, resume from standby
  works fine.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1315435] Re: Dell Inspiron 1525 - suspend/resume failure

2014-05-03 Thread Carsten Wehmeier
I tried mainline kernel 3.15.0-031500rc2-generic and
3.15.0-031500rc3-generic and I get a black screen after plymouth boot
screen, the computer doesn't respond. So I was not able to test resuming
from standby.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1305371] Re: [Dell Inspiron 1525] suspend/resume failure

2014-05-01 Thread Carsten Wehmeier
I have the same problem with my Dell inspiron 1525 and Ubuntu 14.04.
with kernel 3.13.0-24 generic x86. The kernel oops seems to be caused by
the kernel module snd_hda_intel. Resuming from standby works in most
cases with a standby hook which kills pulseaudio and unloads the module
snd_hda_intel before standby and reloads snd_hda_intel after resume. See
attached file. In some cases the computer doesn't go to standby when I
close the lid. When I reopen it, the display remains black and the
computer doesn't respond. So this workarround is not reliable.

I updated from Ubuntu 13.10, the Saucy kernel 3.11.0-19-generic remained
installed. When I boot Ubuntu 14.04 with this kernel, standby and resume
work fine (of course without the standby hook mentioned above).

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1305371] Re: [Dell Inspiron 1525] suspend/resume failure

2014-05-01 Thread Carsten Wehmeier
I just tried mainline kernel 3.12.18-031218-generic for trusty - standby
and resume work fine with this kernel version. So the bug seems to be
new in 3.13.

Many laptops from different manufacturers show similar problems. They
all use the snd_hda_intel kernel module but different codecs.

If I set my ISP username and password in router-cum-modem (ADSL)

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1292509] Re: Missing statistics for `tx_bytes`, `tx_packets`, `rx_bytes` and `rx_packets` since Ubuntu 13.10

2014-03-16 Thread Carsten
Hi, i have the exact same problem with archlinux, but i cant tell if it worked
before - just noticed it today while trying to setup a network widget for
awesome wm.
Are there any fixes yet, or do i have to wait for a kernel update?
