[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1734147] Re: Ubuntu 17.10 corrupting BIOS - many LENOVO laptops models

2017-12-20 Thread Daniel Drake
Can anyone clarify if this issue is caused by simply having the intel
SPI kernel driver enabled & loaded into the kernel, or does this kernel
driver need to be also combined with something in userspace that does
something with the device before the BIOS gets affected?

Bug description:
  SRU Justification

Impact: Many users are reporting issues with bios corruption with
17.10. This seems to stem from enabling the intel-spi-* drivers in the
kernel, which don't appear to be ready for use on end-user machines.

  Fix: Disable this driver.

Test Case: Fix has been verified by our HWE team on affected hardware.

Regression Potential: Minimal, it's unlikely anyone is actually doing
  anything which requires this driver.

  ---

  Hi all,

Basically on Lenovo Y50-70 after installing Ubuntu 17.10, many users
  reported a corrupted BIOS.

It's not possible to save new settings in BIOS anymore and after
rebooting, the system starts with the old settings.

Moreover (and most important) USB booting is not possible anymore
since USB is not recognized. It's very serious, since our machines do
  not have a CDROM.

Lenovo forums at the moment are full of topics regading this issue.

  Thank you!!

   UPDATE (01/12/2017)

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1270676] Re: SD Card Reader broken on UX302LG

2017-04-12 Thread Daniel Drake
Here is a driver from the vendor. Compile tested only.

https://github.com/endlessm/linux/tree/T15537/drivers/scsi/ampe_stor
(if this link stops working in future it's probably because we moved it to the
master branch)

Anyone interested in testing & upstreaming?

Title:
SD Card Reader broken on UX302LG

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
SD card reader (controller Alcor Micro AU6601) is dysfunctional in UX302LG
laptop. USB readers work without problem. Nothing happens when pluggin
SD/mSD/SDHC/mSDHC cards in the reader (might as well use a piece of wood).
Nothing is listed in lsusb -v that could be the reader.
Nohting is listed in lspci -k -vv -nnn.
  Nothing in acpi_listen.
  Nothing in kern.log etc.

According to (select "Windows 8" then "Card Reader") :

http://support.asus.com/download.aspx?SLanguage=en=3=597=UX302LG==GEZaY8oaj8oSlQ3U

  Reader vendor is :
  Alcor Multi-Card Reader Driver
  http://www.pcidatabase.com/vendor_details.php?id=1672

There is only one device that is "Unassigned class" 1aea:6601 but
searching this online only pops up my other bug reports (sigh) and
  vendor is unassigned on pcidatabase.com.

But...Downloading the 14M Win driver for the reader, vendor id 1aea and
device id 6601 is present at multiple instances :
  [DeviceList.NTamd64]
  ; For XP and later
  %AMPCIECR% = DriverInstall_6601, PCI\VEN_1aea_6601

Also there is mention of _Gen instance in the .inf, might point to a
"Generic" alternative ?
  [DeviceList_Gen.NTamd64]
  ; For XP and later
  %AMPCIECR_GEN% = DriverInstall_Gen, PCI\VEN_105b_0ef6

This does point to something totally different online 105b:0ef6 points to
some Realtek HD Audio device...

Hello, after experimenting few days ago with Ubuntu 16.04.1, 16.10 and
17.04, among other problems I found that touchpad and Fn keys (all
except volume control) doesn't work on my brand new ASUS G752VS.

It is very hard even to try Ubuntu 16.10 and 17.04 because of the
missing mouse pointer. This problem must be related to a video driver
because if after installing one is capable to install Nvidia drivers -
problem is solved. This problem doesn't exist both while trying and
  installing Ubuntu 16.04.1!

I'm currently on Windows 10, and this bug report is made from Ubuntu
  16.04.1 LiveCD.

Chris and I don't have experience with the G752 series but looking at
one of the dumps from above:

I: Bus=0003 Vendor=0b05 Product=1837 Version=0110

The patches you linked to add support for this ID 0B05:1837 so I think
the function key issue is now solved, as soon as you are able to
build/run such a kernel.

No ideas about the touchpad issue. I would next check if there are
interrupts registered against that device. Another thing to try is
making sure that the intel pin control driver being used on this
platform is built into the kernel, not a module.

Title:
Elantech touchpad stops working after suspend

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  i have asus a455ld i5 5200u running kubuntu 15.04 with kernel
4.0.8-040008-generic.
touchpad is recognized as elantech version 4. everything was fine until my
notebook go to suspend and resume without touchpad working.
  I tried :
  modprobe -r psmouse
  modprobe psmouse

  it only work before suspend.
execute those commands after resume from suspend is not working.

the last thing i tried is this.

when i use this command before suspend :

  insmod
  /lib/modules/4.0.8-040008-generic/kernel/drivers/input/mouse/psmouse.ko

  these appear in the dmesg:

[ 820.207105] psmouse serio1: elantech: assuming hardware version 4 (with
firmware version 0x381f00)
[ 820.70] psmouse serio1: elantech: Synaptics capabilities query result
0x10, 0x14, 0x0e.
  [ 820.294698] input: ETPS/2 Elantech Touchpad as
/devices/platform/i8042/serio1/input/input146

but when i use the command after suspend, there is nothing any output
  in the dmesg.

i tried all ubuntu varian and opensuse 13.2 live usb, the result is the same.
but in windows 10, touchpad still active after suspend.
