In answer to Brad Figg (brad-figg) : running apport-collect 1318129 did not add any new information. In answer to Joseph Salisbury (jsalisbury) : this machine HAS pae even if the pae flag is not set. (old Compaq NC6000) It has been installed with the --forcepae flag and runs Lubuntu 14.04 perfectly. Here is the result of apport-collect 1307233 BTW, I needed to install apport-collect which is not installed by default. I made another try : 1- from the login screen (nobody loggued in) I hit Ctrl-Alt-F1 2- I logged in on the terminal 3- sudo bash 4- shutdown -h now At this point thee focus jumped on X and I can sees the animated ubuntu close screen. So I hit Ctrl-Alt-F1 to return to my console. I can see the end of the shutdown... Both machines seems to have the same capabilities. BUT : 1- NO wifi detected on the ACER. (OK on the Dell) My first installation hang on kernel configuration for the wifi driver. I found on a blog that un-checking the "use proprietary modules" solved the problem and allowed the installation 2- Machine completely unresponsive with Unity (3D accelerator seems absent) but completely functional with Xubuntu desktop) (Surprisingly smooth on the Dell) 3- NEVER power off when "shutdown" or "reboot" is requested. Ubuntu is more and more microsoft-like : What is good for UBUNTU/Window is good for customers, no matter what they say. This is the main problem of hegemonic situations. By the way, LxLe hich is based on Lubuntu, runs perfectly from an Usb key on these old laptops. The error message is: "This kernel requires the following features not present on the CPU: pae. Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropriate for you CPU." THIS IS AN IMPORTANT REGRESSION! People are able to install and successfully use Ubuntu 12.04 on such pretty new hardware, like IBM Thinkpad T42 laptop with Pentium M 1700Mhz processor, but the bug in syslinux (or something related) forbids Ubuntu 12.04 installation.
