[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1322789] Re: [Toshiba Satellite L845-SP4105LA] laptop fans malfunction in Ubuntu 14.04

2014-05-29 Thread Federico Urtizberea
Yesterday everything seemed to work properly, but today again the fans began to
malfunction.
I followed the steps in this post
http://www.webupd8.org/2014/04/prevent-your-laptop-from-overheating.html to
activate the drivers instead of intel_pstate acpi_cpufreq, and now everything
seems to work fine. Restart the sitema a couple of times, and the fans do not
spin out of control.

Title:
[Toshiba Satellite L845-SP4105LA] laptop fans malfunction in Ubuntu
  14.04

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  Hi,
When booting into Ubuntu 14.04, and using my new Toshiba L845, the fans do
not start working, or do not stoip working, depending on the boot.
Pressing Esc when booting, I can read in the boot messages something like:
Not starting fancontrol; run pwmconfig first.
This message also appears in the boot.log.
I tried to execute pwmconfig, but this is my output:

  root@sdf1:/var/log# pwmconfig
  # pwmconfig revision 6166 (2013-05-01)
This program will search your sensors for pulse width modulation (pwm)
controls, and test each one to see if it controls a fan on
your motherboard. Note that many motherboards do not have pwm
circuitry installed, even if your sensor chip supports pwm.

We will attempt to briefly stop each fan using the pwm controls.
The program will attempt to restore each fan to full speed
after testing. However, it is ** very important ** that you
physically verify that the fans have been to full speed
  after the program has completed.

/usr/sbin/pwmconfig: There are no pwm-capable sensor modules installed
  root@sdf1:/var/log#

But when running sensors, I have an output like this one:

  root@sdf1:/var/log# sensors
  coretemp-isa-
  Adapter: ISA adapter
  Physical id 0: +44.0°C (high = +87.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)
  Core 0: +43.0°C (high = +87.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)
  Core 1: +44.0°C (high = +87.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)
  Core 2: +43.0°C (high = +87.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)
  Core 3: +37.0°C (high = +87.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)

  radeon-pci-0100
  Adapter: PCI adapter
  temp1:+38.5°C

  root@sdf1:/var/log#

As you can see, I boot'ed my machine just a few minutes ago, and this
is why it's so cool...in some minutes the battery will suffer because
of the fans, or because of the heat.

  lsmod qives me this output:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1322789] Re: [Toshiba Satellite L845-SP4105LA] laptop fans malfunction in Ubuntu 14.04

2014-05-28 Thread Federico Urtizberea
Hi,
I have the same laptop and had the same problem , the fans were not working. lm
-sensors indicated that the temperature reached 70 ° C.
I had already installed the package acpi, who used to monitor temperature in my
old laptop, and when I install version 14.04 on my L845, I did also to monitor
temperature because I give an intensive use.
But when running the command acpi-t did not get any results, and run acpi-V the
result was as follows:

Luzbelito @ luzbola : ~ $ acpi- V
Adapter 0 : on- line
Cooling 0 : pkg -temp- 0 no state information available
Cooling 1: intel_powerclamp no state information available
Cooling 2: LCD 0 of 100
Cooling 3: Processor 0 of 10
Cooling 4: Processor 0 of 10
Cooling 5 : Processor 0 of 10
Cooling 6: Processor 0 of 10
Cooling 7: Processor 0 of 10
Cooling 8: Processor 0 of 10
Cooling 9: Processor 0 of 10
Cooling 10: Processor 0 of 10

As the temperature did not go down , I install the package thermald . The
configuration file thermald was unchanged , so fans should start at 50 ° C ,
which was not the case and the temperature was still high .
Then I uninstall the package acpi and everything started to work properly .
When the temperature reaches 50 ° C the fans start to run and when that
temperature drops stop.
Perform testing to reinstall the acpi package and the problem appears again, to
uninstall everything starts working again.
Hope this helps.
Best regards,

Federico
