[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1964844] [NEW] linux-firmware upgrade started failing

2022-03-14 Thread FurretUber
Public bug reported:

It was observed that linux-firmware upgrade started failing now. At the
end of the apt upgrade process, the following message appeared (messages
are in Portuguese):

Erros foram encontrados durante o processamento de:

/tmp/apt-dpkg-install-WX2tyT/55-linux-firmware_20220314.gitcd01f857-0ubuntu1_all.deb
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

In the middle of the upgrade process, there was the following error:

A descompactar linux-firmware (20220314.gitcd01f857-0ubuntu1) sobre
(20220302.gitee0667aa-0ubuntu1) ...

 update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-5.15.0-22-generic

The suspect I have is that linux-firmware started requiring an
executable /tmp. This computer has the following /tmp mount:

tmpfs on /tmp type tmpfs (rw,nosuid,nodev,noexec,relatime,inode64)

Considering dpkg/apt are already privileged processes, I find it strange
it tries to extract and execute from /tmp when it could, theoretically,
do this from another, safer, directory made specifically for dpkg/apt.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1948541] [NEW] Microphone is silent if left and right channels are set to the same volume

2021-10-23 Thread FurretUber
Public bug reported:

If the microphone volume is set the same for both left and right
channels, it's nearly silent, being unusable, as if the left and right
channel cancel each other.

The workaround I had on Focal was to create a remapped source only with
the right channel. However, on jammy, another bug makes this workaround
fail.

While I reported the pipewire bug at
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/pipewire/pipewire/-/issues/1734 I'm also
reporting this bug so, hopefully, the kernel could be fixed and no
workaround would be required in the future.

The following image shows an example of the volume disparity that makes
the microphone work properly:
https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/327981417407447040/901465383201013800/unknown.png

While such setting allow to use the microphone, it's annoying for the
people I'm talking with.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1946288] [NEW] iGVT-g guest freezes if idle for too long

2021-10-06 Thread FurretUber
Public bug reported:

A Windows 10 iGVT-g guest is crashing if left idle for too long. "Too
long" can mean hours or even minutes with no load. The QEMU command line
is:

/usr/bin/qemu-system-x86_64 -name Windows 10 -nodefaults -M pc,usb=true
-machine kernel_irqchip=on -enable-kvm -mem-prealloc -mem-path
/dev/hugepages/qemu -device
qemu-xhci,id=qemu-xhci,addr=4,p2=15,p3=15,streams=on,command_serr_enable=on
-global PIIX4_PM.disable_s3=1 -global PIIX4_PM.disable_s4=1 -drive
file=./images/redm.qcow2,if=virtio -cpu host -smp sockets=1,cores=2,threads=1 -m
 8192M -bios /usr/share/seabios/bios.bin -device
usb-tablet,id=tablet,bus=qemu-xhci.0,port=1 -vga none -monitor vc -serial stdio

virtio-net-pci,netdev=net0,id=n0,addr=0x8 -monitor
telnet:127.0.0.1:5,server,nowait

Normally, I use the machine pc-i440fx-3.1 but I set the latest one (pc,
or pc-i440fx-4.2) for testing, which didn't fix this freeze.

In this state, it's not possible to reclaim the memory and the virtual
GPU, they are stuck until the computer is powered off. After this QEMU
guest freeze, it is impossible to power off the computer cleanly: it's
required to forcefully shutdown, as the system fails to

The telnet server from the guest still connect, but doesn't respond.

I installed the OEM kernel to get the 5.14 version of the kernel.
Testing with drm-tip (commit 7c36ed237585ed2f645439e62dafccac070d5e33,
from August), I was able to left the guest idle for hours with no
problem multiple times, but using Ubuntu's generic (5.4, 5.8, 5.11) or
oem (5.14) kernel this freeze is happening.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1904953] Re: USB2.0 HUB only works after an USB device is connected

2020-11-24 Thread FurretUber
Using the kernel from comment 10, I did not observe an improvement: the
devices connected to the hub aren't detected as often as before,
requiring the same workaround.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1904953] Re: USB2.0 HUB only works after an USB device is connected

2020-11-23 Thread FurretUber
Here are two dmesg with the arguments added. On first dmesg I connected
the USB hub 3 times. The two devices connected to the hub were:

045e:00cb Microsoft Corp. Basic Optical Mouse v2.0
25a7:fa23 Compx 2.4G Receiver

On the first attempt, all devices were detected. On the second and third
attempt, only the USB hub was detected.

For second dmesg, the log was cleared with dmesg -C, then the USB hub
was connected, with both the Microsoft mouse (045e:00cb) and the
wireless keyboard and mouse (25a7:fa23) connected to the hub, neither
was detected at first. After the wireless keyboard and mouse (25a7:fa23)
was disconnected, the Microsoft mouse (045e:00cb) was detected and the
hub started working normally.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1904953] Re: USB2.0 HUB only works after an USB device is connected

2020-11-21 Thread FurretUber
Disabling the autosuspend from the USB device fixed the problem.
However, I did not want to disable it for all USB devices, so I added an
udev rule:

ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTRS{idVendor}=="214b",
ATTR{idProduct}=="7000", ATTR{product}=="USB2.0 HUB",
TEST=="power/control", ATTR{power/control}:="on"

On Windows, the USB power saving is enabled but this does not happen.
Maybe Windows has a quirk configured for this device already?

the hub works fine: once connected, it is detected and devices
  connected on it are detected.

On Linux, most of the times nothing happens or only the hub is
detected (not the devices connected to it). After one of the devices
is disconnected and reconnected, or another USB device is connected in
the hub, then the hub and all devices connected to it are detected at
  once.

I believe this is a problem related to the Linux kernel because I
never observed this behaviour on the computer's firmware or on
  Windows.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1899063] [NEW] Deleting files on exFAT USB degrades system

2020-10-08 Thread FurretUber
Public bug reported:

I was deleting a large amount of files from an exFAT USB pendrive and at
45% of the file deletion, the system became degraded: USB disks were no
longer possible to mount or dismount, no new USB devices were detected,
systemd-journal and syslog were using 100% CPU on htop each, shutdown,
reboot and suspend were disabled, commands using sudo no longer worked.

I was unable to obtain anything meaningful while the error was happening
because of how slow the system became. The following line repeated
endlessly:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1824175] Re: iGVT-g guest does not load graphics: kernel WARNING and wedged GPU

Title:
iGVT-g guest does not load graphics: kernel WARNING and wedged GPU

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
On an Ubuntu 19.04 Disco Dingo Beta (both live and installed) Intel
GVT-g guest, it was noticed that the graphical interface does not
  load. The following message appears:

  [ 19.844904] i915 :00:03.0: Failed to initialize GPU, declaring
  it wedged!

And there are two kernel WARNING that appear. The first WARNING seems
harmless and it was already reported:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1799102 and is
related to the host kernel, on this case 4.18.0-17 from HWE.

The second WARNING is new and probably is related to the failure to
  load the graphics.

It is possible to access the guest using the serial console. While the
system claims GDM is working, there is no graphical interface visible.

I have tested with Xubuntu 19.04 Disco Dingo Beta too and the same
problem was noticed: two kernel WARNING, a wedged GPU and failure to
load the graphics, even if the LightDM services was shown as running
  by systemctl status.

Ubuntu 18.04 guests with kernel 4.15 and 4.18 are working. Mageia 7
guests with kernel 5.0.7 are working too, this seems related to the
5.0.0 kernel from Disco. Tested with both 5.0.0-7 and 5.0.0-8.

Example of QEMU command line used:

  qemu-system-x86_64 -global PIIX4_PM.disable_s4=1 -M pc,usb=false
-machine kernel_irqchip=on -global PIIX4_PM.disable_s3=1 -name "Ubuntu

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1880049] Re: Using Lakka with Intel GVT-g freezes the host system

2020-06-01 Thread FurretUber
I tested 5.7.0-050700-generic, and the system didn't crash. I'm able to
use Lakka from QEMU most of the times. Once, a GPU hang happened, but I
was able to restart LightDM to fix it.

The attached file is the card0/error after the GPU hang.
