Although the title refers to Unity specifically, I'm afraid I have to submit a "me too" for Xubuntu 16.04. Coming from 14.04 I definitely have to report that the "light, non-fat" flavour became more heavy footed. We've some legacy systems that now use significantly more CPU and RAM (50% of 1.5G, where it was ~10%), often resulting in slower, or even no function, e.g. mplayer frame dropping, dropping out of sync, dropping subs, or just plainly failing to play video (resolution > screen size) that was perfectly fine on 14.04.
Addressing the elephant in the room: since this has been reported since the 16.04 roll out in April 2016 by multiple people, on various systems and flavours, how to address this and what activity is there on this? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1572801 Title: Ubuntu 16.04 Unity desktop uses much more ram than Ubuntu 15.10 Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Status in linux source package in Xenial: Confirmed Bug description: Ubuntu 16.04 64bit ISO number 20160420.1 unity version 7.4.0+16.04.20160415-0ubuntu1 Ubuntu 16.04 64bit ram usage has increase dramatically over Ubuntu 15.10 Ubuntu 16.04 ram roughly 1 GB Ubuntu15.10 can be tuned to 420, 450 MB Ubuntu 16.04 with unity uses 1GB whereas Kubuntu 16.04 is using 420MB live usb ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 16.04 Package: unity 7.4.0+16.04.20160415-0ubuntu1 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 4.4.0-21.37-generic 4.4.6 Uname: Linux 4.4.0-21-generic x86_64 .tmp.unity_support_test.0: ApportVersion: 2.20.1-0ubuntu2 Architecture: amd64 CasperVersion: 1.376 CompizPlugins: No value set for `/apps/compiz-1/general/screen0/options/active_plugins' CompositorRunning: compiz CompositorUnredirectDriverBlacklist: '(nouveau|Intel).*Mesa 8.0' CompositorUnredirectFSW: true CurrentDesktop: Unity Date: Thu Apr 21 01:44:22 2016 DistUpgraded: Fresh install DistroCodename: xenial DistroVariant: ubuntu GraphicsCard: Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200 v3/4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:0412] (rev 06) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc.
