[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1667750] Re: xhci_hcd: ERROR Transfer event TRB DMA ptr not part of current TD ep_index 2 comp_code 13

2017-09-05 Thread Lance Parsons
I had similar issues with checksum errors on Precision 5520. Updating to
the recently released BIOS version 1.4 has resolved those issues.
Finally, all is well with Ubuntu, TB16, and Precision 5520. Thanks all.

Bug description:
  [SRU Justification]

  [Impact]
Dell TB16 docking station has issue to use gigabit ethernet. The ethernet
will disconnect unless it's changed to 100Mb/s.

  [Test Case]
Download some big files from the web.
User confirms the patch fixes the issue.

  [Regression Potential]
This patch only effects ASMEDIA's ASM1042A.
The regression potential is low, also limited to the specific device.

  ---

My system contains a Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8153 Gigabit
Ethernet Adapter which is on usb3 bus in my docking station (Dell
TB16) which is attached to my laptop (Dell XPS9550) via Thunderbolt 3.

I get usb related kernel error messages when I initiate a high speed
  transfer (by issuing wget http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current
  /zesty-desktop-amd64.iso) and the download fails.

This does not happened when the Ethernet adapter is connected to a
100Mb/s switch, but only when connected to 1000Mb/s. It also does not
happened with slow traffic (e.g. web page browsing). This is not a new
bug with kernel 4.10, but has been going on since at least 4.7 and
maybe (probably?) since forever. I'm aware of several others with this
configuration (RTL8153 on usb3 behind thunderbolt 3) that have the
same issue. This bug is also not specific to Ubuntu; I also get it on
Arch Linux. I've also tested and seen this bug with several different
  models of thunderbolt 3 docks.

Here are the relevant kernel log messages:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1484919] Re: Kernel oops associated with BIRD/netlink

2015-08-19 Thread Lance Robson
A little more information:
The ready-repro scenario does NOT hit this when using a 3.13 kernel
(3.13.0-57-generic #95-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jun 19 09:28:15 UTC 2015 x86_64 x86_64
x86_64 GNU/Linux) - though Shaun said that in the first post.

If I upgrade my 3.13 VM image to 3.19 (usingapt-get install linux-
generic-lts-vivid) I can hit it again (so the problem isn't that the GCE
provided VM image is custom-patched in some way)

Now to try the 4.2 jsalisbury suggested...

Title:
  Kernel oops associated with BIRD/netlink

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
Scale testing our product, which uses the BIRD BGP daemon, on Google's
GCE cloud, we see frequent (40% of hosts) Kernel Oopses and reboots on
kernel 3.19.0-25-generic #26~14.04.1-Ubuntu with BIRD running. This
is the standard GCE-provided Ubuntu image.

If we replace the image with a stock Ubuntu one (kernel
3.13.0-61-generic #100-Ubuntu), installed from ISO, then we do not see
  the issue.

If we stop BIRD then we no longer see the issue.

I suspect that this is an issue with the way BIRD is using netlink,
triggering a kernel bug. It seems to happen more at scale, when BIRD
is doing more with netlink and we have thousands of routes in place.

  Here's a sample kernel oops:

Title:
  Kernel oops associated with BIRD/netlink

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1484919] Re: Kernel oops associated with BIRD/netlink

2015-08-18 Thread Lance Robson
What diags would be useful for this bug? I've got a reliable repro
scenario, but its not a simple one (setup 110 GCE nodes and send 700
routes into BIRD).

I've tried configuring crashdump on my GCE nodes, but I can't seem to
get crashkernel=384M-2G:64M,2G-:128M into the kernel command line on
GCE.

[In detail, I've tried editing /etc/default/grub and adding the
parameter to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT, then run sudo update-grub and
then rebooted. But /proc/cmdline still shows that my parameter isn't
there.]

Any ideas for getting crashdump working on GCE or alternative ideas for
diags?

journalctl -xe shows:
systemd[1]: Unit bluetooth.service entered failed state.
systemd[1]: bluetooth.service failed.
systemd[1]: bluetooth.service holdoff time over, scheduling restart.
systemd[1]: start request repeated too quickly for bluetooth.service
systemd[1]: Failed to start Bluetooth service.

journalctl -u bluetooth shows:

systemd[1]: Starting Bluetooth service...
systemd[2561]: Failed at step EXEC spawning /usr/sbin/bluetoothd: Permission
denied
systemd[1]: bluetooth.service: main process exited, code=exited, status=203/EXEC
systemd[1]: Failed to start Bluetooth service.
systemd[1]: UnitApr 27 10:18:10 mobile bluetooth.service entered failed state.

Totallyking, do you perhaps have also the windows-utility for bios
v1.61? i dont have any cd-r handy and burning it into a dvd-rw seems a
no-go...

  * however resume was impossible: wakeup failed through mouse clicks, various
keyboard keys and combinations and also the power key, only a hard reset (5s or
so holding down the power key) could bring it back to life

Adding the kernel cmdline option acpi_sleep=nonvs was of no avail,
  too.

I recently upgraded to a new BIOS v2.07 [1], I think the problem
  exists since then.

  Update
  ==
I confirmed that this is definitely a BIOS issue. The last working BIOS is
v1.61 [2], so the change was introduced by v2.07 [1]. Installing the latest
v2.08 [3] does not fix this problem.

So this is the changelog for v2.07 [1]:
  - (Fix) Fixed an issue that system will auto wakeup after shutdown when
battery capacity is under 15% on DC only.
  - (Fix) Fixed an issue related to APS.
  - (New) Added support for new GPU config.

By the way, I could not find a new GPU config option in the BIOS, same
old choice Integrated vs. Optimus, nothing new.

[Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E540] suspend/resume failure

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
suspend to RAM failed before it was completed:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1333634] Re: [Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E540] Resume was not possible

2014-06-30 Thread Lance
I tried yesterday with a 13.10 live CD, but resume did not work on that
release either. will try again with sometning older (12.x?)

strangely enough, i have a colleague with the same laptop that dosen't
seem to have any problem with the suspend funciontality under ubuntu
13.10. could it be something related with the module thinkpad_acpi?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1331077] Re: [Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E540] suspend/resume failure

2014-06-30 Thread Lance

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1333634

laptop that has actually working suspend functionality i'll ask him what

Title:
[Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E540] suspend/resume failure

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
suspend to RAM failed before it was completed:
  * fan was still on and
  * Fn-F1- Fn-F4-status LEDs were still on (signifying muted speakers and
microphone respectively)
  * nevertheless the general ThinkPad LED (the i's dot) (/proc/acpi/ibm/led 0)
behaved like normal: slowly blinking, which normally means I'm suspended to
RAM.
  * however resume was impossible: wakeup failed through mouse clicks, various
keyboard keys and combinations and also the power key, only a hard reset (5s or
so holding down the power key) could bring it back to life

Adding the kernel cmdline option acpi_sleep=nonvs was of no avail,
  too.

I recently upgraded to a new BIOS v2.07 [2], I think the problem
  exists since then.

  Update
  ==
I confirmed that this is definitely a BIOS issue. The last working BIOS is
v1.61 [3], so the change was introduced by v2.07 [2]. Installing the latest
v2.08 [4] does not fix this problem.

So this is the changelog for v2.07 [2]:
  - (Fix) Fixed an issue that system will auto wakeup after shutdown when
battery capacity is under 15% on DC only.
  - (Fix) Fixed an issue related to APS.
  - (New) Added support for new GPU config.

By the way, I could not find a new GPU config option in the BIOS, same
old choice Integrated vs. Optimus, nothing new.
