One of the users has submitted a very memory-consuming job, which successfully crashes the server. Upon closer inspection, the crash happens like this: 1. I run matlab with the given file (as an ordinary, unpriveleged user) 2. RAM usage quickly fills up 3. Once the RAM meter hits 100%, the system freezes: All SSH connections freeze up, and while switching VTs directly on the machine works, no new processes run - so one can't log in, or do anything if he is logged in. (Sometimes typing doesn't work at all) Note that the swap - while 7 gigs of it are available - is never used. (The machine has 7 gigs of RAM as well) I've tried the same on my Gutsy 32-bit box, and there was no system freezeup - matlab simply notified that the system was out of memory. However, it did this once memory was 100% in use - and still, swap didn't get used at all! (Though it is mounted correctly and shows up in "top" and "free"). So first thing's first - I'd like to eliminate the crash issue. I suppose I could switch the server to 32-bit, but I think that would be a performance loss, considering that it does a lot of heavy computation. There is no reason, however, that this should happen on a 64-bit machine anyway. Why does it? [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1526537] Re: blk_update_request: I/O error
I solved my problem! Recently I have published a guide on how to install linux on loopback LVM devices booting from USB (so without have to install grub on the internal disk, leaving it as original). Here is the guide: https://github.com/DareDevil73/linux-on-loopback-usb . Then I fallen in the freeze issue on high memory load and I observed an abnormal swap space usage (all the RAM eaten, and swap usage near to zero). Obviously the LVM swap partition was mounted and working properly, but I don't known why the kernel did not use it as expected. I tried an alternative solution. I have created a swap loopback file (not LVM) and the freeze is gone. Now the swap file is used as it would be, and the OS never freeze! Please look at https://github.com/DareDevil73/linux-on-loopback-usb #known-issues to get deeper information. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1526537 Title: blk_update_request: I/O error Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Expired Bug description: On my laptop I am using the ubuntu in persistent mode with a backing files: casper-rw, home-rw. Here is as much information as I can give now but I'll run anything (including the possibility of allowing a remote connect) to diagnose this problem as I think it is serious and has the potential to ruining machines as I'm frequently having to hard shut down which of course runs the possibility of damaging a hard drive. Problem: Hard freeze very often (I've had as many as 5 in an hour). Hard freeze definition from me: 1. Mouse stops moving 2. Keyboard actions have no response (including alt+cntrl+f1) 3. Hard drive spins for a shor time but then stops 4. Only way to fix is hard shut down What's been done: 1. Checked logs (willing to provide any but I couldn't see any problem) 2. Tried finding out if software is triggering it, seems to be random, could be wrong Again I think that this is a major problem so I'll do whatever it takes to provide information. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 159356] Re: System freeze on high memory usage
I have the same issue on Linux Mint 18.3 64 bit and it is reproducibile by the attached script. ** Attachment added: "mem-eater" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/159356/+attachment/5094516/+files/mem-eater -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/159356 Title: System freeze on high memory usage Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in linux package in Arch Linux: New Bug description: I run a batch matlab job server here at my lab, running Dapper 6.06 (for the LTS).
