[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1276705] Re: Kernel 3.13 fail to boot with LSI SAS1068E (Dell SAS 6/iR)
I have reproduced today this same problem with a freshly installed and fully up-to-date Ubuntu Trusty 14.04.3 64bit on a Dell Poweredge R300 with the SAS6i/R controller. The system has 2 SAS disks configured as a RAID1 volume in the SAS 6i/R. Switching to kernel linux-generic-lts-wily did not solve the problem. We implemented the rootdelay workaround and that let the system boot without problems. After experimenting with various root delays we settled on 45 seconds, it seems ok after trying various cold and warm reboots. We tried 30 seconds but that was not enough. Hope this helps... -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1276705 Title: Kernel 3.13 fail to boot with LSI SAS1068E (Dell SAS 6/iR) Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Status in linux source package in Trusty: Fix Released Bug description: We have recently upgraded an Dell R300 server to Trusty (was running fine in precise), and after upgrade it fail to boot. It is an issue with the SAS controller during the initilisation. It fail to detect the disk, we have the following error in console log: [ 36.539955] scsi4: error handler thread failed to spawn, error = -12 [ 36.552694] mptsas: ioc0: WARNING - Unable to register controller with SCSI subsystem After this error, initramfs drop to a shell complaining that rootfs is not found. No disk is seen at all (cat /proc/partition only show sr0 - cdrom drive). We have this issue with two different server (both R300, both Dell SAS 6/iR controller and same hardware). We don't have this issue with another Dell server (R310, Dell PERC H200). We also tester with old kernel (generic, 3.2.0-58.88), it is working. Those server need a greater rootdelay (probably #579572), so we have rootdelay=45. If we remove rootdelay=45, then disk are correctly recognized ! (but few second too late, initramfs dropped to a shell. Pressing control-D resume normal boot) So the issue is that with the (mandatory) rootdelay greater that 30 (default value I think), the disk are not detected due to the error shown above. This is a regression since those server worked in precise (and work with precise old kernel). Public bug reported: Philips i386 PC with rt2x00 pci is suffering loss of WiFi connectivity after installing 15.04 Beta. The system did work correctly with older Ubuntu versions (like 12.04) and had this problem show up after upgrading to Trusty (as I already reported in bug #1318837). Using Trusty the problem went away when switching from the stock 3.13.0-XX-generic kernel to builds of newer kernels (like 3.14.1-031401). Now the same problem shows up again after installing Vivid Beta. It seems to be the same problem reported for other Ubuntu releases (see bugs #1318837 and #1383555) and also the same problem of this upstream kernel bug: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=61621 Someone on kernel's bug mentions turning off MSI interrupts and I can confirm it did change the situation: - normally the system looses WiFi connectivity mere seconds after boot (eg. can't ping anything after boot) - if I boot with pci=nomsi the system will remain connected to the WiFi for a much longer period (eg. This is affecting me too, on a system that worked perfectly with some older Ubuntu release (I guess it was 12.04 LTS but not 100% sure about it, sorry). I did not see it mentioned anywhere on this BR but afaik the kernel bug is this - maybe could be helpful to narrow down the search for the fix: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=61621 I tested some kernels on my system with these results: - 3.13.0-30-generic (Trusty's stock kernel) is affected - 3.13.11-03131104 is affected (and so are a few other 3.13.x that I tested) - 3.14.1-031401 works (and so do all 3.14.x at least up to 3.14.9-031409) - 3.15.4-031504 works - 3.16.0-031600rc2 and rc4 both work ** Bug watch added: Linux Kernel Bug Tracker #61621 http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=61621 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1318837 Title: 1814:0201 ieee80211 phy0: rt2x00queue_flush_queue: Warning - Queue 0 failed to flush Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: In Trusty, happens continuously 100% of the time after boot/reboot, finally fails, followed by authentication failure.
