The issue is with suspend. It suspends perfectly if I just boot up and immediately try it. I did a number of the steps in the link provided for debugging to the best of my ability (i'm pretty new). Last night I had an issue with shutdown: after running a stop job on mysql community server the system froze on 'reboot: Power down'. So, 'echo freeze | sudo tee /sys/power/state' seems to work quite smoothly. Is there any reason NOT to use this from here on out instead of 'systemctl suspend'. Public bug reported: I'm on an Acer Espire with intel microcode running dual boot Xorg 17.10 using Gnome. I'd say it's usually 50/50 that i'm able to suspend and successfully resume. Same goes for shutting down now, where it will freeze on the purple Ubuntu screen. When I suspend, the monitor will go out but the hard drive will still be running and I have to hard power off.
