[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1104289] Re: Doesn't warn that update will require restart (XB-Restart-Required)
Yes, I reported both of them. The problem needs fixing separately in each package where it occurs. But if you fix one of them, it should be easy to fix the other. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1104289 Title: Doesn't warn that update will require restart (XB-Restart-Required) Status in One Hundred Papercuts: Triaged Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: When updating a package requires restarting the computer, it is good for Software Updater to show this *before* installation begins. That way, if you need to ration updates for any reason, you can batch together those updates that require a restart, minimizing downtime and installation time. To allow this, the new Software Updater UI puts a restart icon next to an individual update -- with an explanation below the list of updates -- if that update's debian/control file contains the XB-Restart- Required key. Kernel packages should set this key, but currently do not. Fixing this is a one-line change. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1401425] Re: Uninstalling unused kernel requires a reboot
A report of something that broke in a particular kernel release, which doesn't mention Ubuntu Software Center, is highly unlikely to be a problem in USC. 3.16.0.24 and 3.16.0.25 aren't listed at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux. But looking at https://launchpad.net/~canonical-kernel- team/+archive/ubuntu/ppa/+build/6639809/+files/linux- image-3.16.0-28-generic_3.16.0-28.38_amd64.deb for example, DEBIAN/postinst contains the magic words /usr/share/update-notifier /notify-reboot-required, but DEBIAN/prerm and DEBIAN/postrm do not. So I don't see how uninstalling the package could prompt for a restart. Could you copy and paste the terminal output from when you do the removal? ** Package changed: software-center (Ubuntu) = linux (Ubuntu) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1401425 Title: Uninstalling unused kernel requires a reboot Status in linux package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: When Linux kernel is updated, a package with the new kernel version is installed, and the system offers to reboot the machine (an icon appears in the system tray). After reboot the new kernel is loaded, but the old one is still installed. When I remove the old kernel packages (e.g. linux-image-3.16.0-25-generic, linux-image- extra-3.16.0-25-generic, linux-headers-3.16.0-25, linux- headers-3.16.0-25-generic) the system offers to reboot again, even though that kernel is not used. In essence this means that kernel upgrade requires two reboots. Removing unused kernel packages should not require a reboot, and some time ago it actually worked that way. I can't remember exactly which kernel release broke that (probably, 3.16.0-24 or so). [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1207258] Re: [MacBook4, 1] Kernel panic: __ticket_spin_lock - not syncing: Fatal exception in interrupt
Joseph Salisbury and Christopher M. Penalver, please refer to the first sentence of the bug report. If I had steps to reproduce the problem, I would have provided them. Since I made clear that I do not, why are you suggesting that I test a different kernel? What would I do with the kernel, exactly? I reported this bug in case the stack and call trace were sufficient to identify it. If they are not, and there is nothing specific I can do to help you find it, please just close the report.
