[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1490846] Re: consistent kernel panic with 3.13.0-62-generic and other errors - fails to boot

2015-09-01 Thread Michael Steffens
I am observing exactly the same failure on a HP 8530w. Kernel panic
messages are the same as those on on the screen shots referred to in the
original report.

These failures are intermittent. With 3.13.0-62 they inhibit the boot
about 80% of the time. With 3.13.0-61 they also occurred, but less
frequently. Release 3.13.0-58 was the last one booting reliably for me.

  System: Inspiron 3451
Dell Inspiron 3000 14" with native Ubuntu 14.04

I tried to report it on the dell support forum and included pictures:
  http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/software-os/f/3525/t/19648359

basically a lot is going on and i (and other people) are having
consistent kernel panics with the latest kernel update
(3.13.0-62-generic). I took multiple pictures with my camera. here are
the various errors i have seen:

  BUG: soft lockup - CPU2 stuck for 23s! [swapper/0:1]

fixing recursive fault but reboot is needed!

perf samples too long, lowering kernel.perf_event_max_sample rate to

Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

"ubuntu-bug linux" failed and said: "problem in
linux-image-3.13.0-38-generic"

  1) cat /proc/version_signature > version.log
  2) sudo lspci -vnvn > lspci-vnvn.log

neither of the above commands did anything.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1390764] Re: Display remains fully dimmed after resume from suspend

2015-02-22 Thread Michael Steffens
Exceuted the tracing steps suggested in
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend using the latest mainline
kernel

# uname -r
3.19.0-031900-generic

and everything worked as expected. The suspend state was entered seconds
after running

# sync echo 1 /sys/power/pm_trace pm-suspend

and the notebook resumed within seconds after pushing the power button.
As usual the display returned fully dimmed and all controls to alter
display brightness have no effect any more.

/proc/acpi/wakeup has not changed between suspend and resume. The RTC is
skewed by nearly 21 years

# hwclock --show
Thu 19 Apr 1984 06:00:15 PM CEST -0.485252 seconds

indicating that some tracing information were put there. However, I can
find only find one pair of

[1.981094] Magic number: 3:558:892
[1.981174] bdi default: hash matches

which was already included in dmesg before suspend, and doesn't quite
match the pattern of what to watch out for. I am attaching dmesg output
both gathered before and after suspend/resume.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1390764] Re: Display remains fully dimmed after resume from suspend

2015-02-19 Thread Michael Steffens
Managed to upgrade to latest BIOS release by temporarily mounting a
Windows HD. Result:

# dmidecode -s bios-version dmidecode -s bios-release-date
68PDV Ver. F.20
12/08/2011

The dimming issue when resuming from suspend remains.

Title:
display is fully dimmed after resume from suspend

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Won't Fix

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

When I resume from suspend (while on AC power), the laptop display
brightness is set to it's lowest level, even when I had the brightness
turned all the way up before. Interestingly enough, this only seems to
happen on the first suspend after a reboot. Once I have turned up the
display brightness again using the function keys, the next
suspend/resume cycle will work normally (until the next reboot).
Finally, when I use the function keys to increase the brightness after
a suspend, I see that the brightness level in the notification bar
indicates that the brightness is set to the maximum. Only after
repeated adjustments with the function keys, the indicator 'resets'
and reflects the true display brightness level. I'm using the
proprietary nvidia display driver, but I've never had this problem
before in Jaunty. Also, in case it makes a difference, I've set my
laptop to suspend on lid closure since that's the way I generally
  suspend the laptop.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1390764] [NEW] Display remains fully dimmed after resume from suspend

2014-11-08 Thread Michael Steffens
Public bug reported:

The symptoms reported with
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/451282 persist.
After resuming from sudpend the display returns fully dimmed, and
display brightness can't be adjusted, neither using FN keys, nor using
KDE power management control.

The issue occurs regardless whether the supend state was activated by
low battery, by closing the display, or by explicitly selecting sleep
mode in KDE.

Killing and restarting X does not solve the problem. A reboot does.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1390764] Re: Display remains fully dimmed after resume from suspend

2014-11-08 Thread Michael Steffens
Additional information: Unlike described in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/451282 the problem
does not disappear with subsequents suspen/resume cycles.

So far a reboot is the only way for me to get display brightness back.

Title:
Display remains fully dimmed after resume from suspend

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  The symptoms reported with
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/451282 persist.
After resuming from sudpend the display returns fully dimmed, and
display brightness can't be adjusted, neither using FN keys, nor using
  KDE power management control.

The issue occurs regardless whether the supend state was activated by
low battery, by closing the display, or by explicitly selecting sleep
  mode in KDE.

Killing and restarting X does not solve the problem. A reboot does.

Title:
Display remains fully dimmed after resume from suspend

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  The symptoms reported with
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/451282 persist.
After resuming from suspend the display returns fully dimmed, and
display brightness can't be adjusted, neither using FN keys, nor using
  KDE power management control.

The issue occurs regardless whether the suspend state was activated by
low battery, by closing the display, or by explicitly selecting sleep
  mode in KDE.

Killing and restarting X does not solve the problem. A reboot does.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1390764] Re: Display remains fully dimmed after resume from suspend

2014-11-08 Thread Michael Steffens
Christopher, the BIOS update package you are referring me to contains
only Windows runnable files, and doesn't contain the README file your
BIOSUpdate link is referring to:

Extracting cabinet: Downloads/sp55640.exe
  extracting bios/HPQFlash.exe
  extracting bios/Rom.CAB
  extracting bios/WSSP55640.rtf

WSSP55640.rtf is giving directions only for Windows, too. No mention of
how to create an ISO image to perform the update, or alike. On the other
hand, there is no Windows or DOS of any kind on my PC, and no space left
to create one ...

How sure are you that the outdated BIOS is causing the issue, and if so,
do you have any hint how to get the bios flashed anyway?

Title:
Display remains fully dimmed after resume from suspend

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
After resuming from suspend the display returns fully dimmed, and
display brightness can't be adjusted, neither using FN keys, nor using
KDE power management control. The issue occurs regardless whether the
suspend state was activated by low battery, by closing the display, or
by explicitly selecting sleep mode in KDE. Killing and restarting X
does not solve the problem. A reboot does.
