[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1711951] Re: CPU fan goes full throttle triggered by waking up from suspend on Lenovo X1 Carbon (4th Gen., 2016)

2017-09-05 Thread Michael Stucki
@jsalisbury Will do and report back...

Still would like to try this out on my own, but I fail to find out how
to build the hwe kernel on my own. See my questions above. As it looks
to me, the official documentation is outdated or incomplete. Can you (or
anyone else) please help?

Thinkpad X1 Carbon 5th generation ultrabook with i7 Kabylake CPU running
Ubuntu 17.04 has its fan go full steam if the laptop is woken up from
sleep/suspend. Without any sleep/suspend the laptop's fan is basically "off" or
silent, even for hours.

The bug has been fixed upstream, see

and I hope this fix will make its way into a near-future kernel update
  to ubuntu :)

  Many thanks!

  Additional remarks:

  - Like mentioned in https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=191181, the
bug happens in other Lenovo models as well. It's not limited to the X1 Carbon
5th Gen.
  - The bug was fixed in kernel 4.13 but not in 4.10. This means that users who
run the HWE kernel on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS will have this problem too!

I can reproduce it on my local system which has "linux-image-generic-
  hwe-16.04" installed (4.10.0.32.34).

Reading through the comments, it's not exactly clear to me which of
the commits has fixed this problem, but I guess that the following two
  changes have made the difference:

  https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/9835823/
  https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/9835825/

I am reporting this as a new issue because the fixes from 4.13 need to
be backported to 4.10 for users of the Ubuntu 16.04 HWE kernel.

  Many thanks!

The problem just happened again on this kernel (4.10.0.33.35), so the
issue still needs to be solved.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1711951] Re: CPU fan goes full throttle triggered by waking up from suspend on Lenovo X1 Carbon (4th Gen., 2016)

2017-09-04 Thread Michael Stucki
Status: Right now I'm on linux-image-generic-hwe-16.04 version
4.10.0.33.35 and it looks like the situation has improved a lot. The
last few days I was able to suspend and resume and the fan remained
silent. I only remember one time when the fan was loud and only a reboot
helped.

Therefore I'd like to keep this issue open for a few more days, just to
see if it happens again...

Besides this, I would still be happy if anyone can answer my questions
from above...

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1711951] Re: CPU fan goes full throttle triggered by waking up from suspend on Lenovo X1 Carbon (4th Gen., 2016)

2017-08-25 Thread Michael Stucki
Thanks Joseph! Unfortunately the error persists after suspend (like
before).

If I want to test this myself, how can I build a kernel from
git://kernel.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ubuntu-xenial.git, branch "hwe"? I tried
to follow https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/GitKernelBuild and
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/BuildYourOwnKernel but didn't succeed.
Where do I take the "debian/" folder from? Should I use the folder which
is included in the Git repo? But then, what's debian.hwe/ used for?

I know it's offtopic but it would help me to identify the needed patches
for this problem on my own... Thanks for any pointers.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1711951] Re: CPU fan goes full throttle triggered by waking up from suspend on Lenovo X1 Carbon (4th Gen., 2016)

2017-08-21 Thread Michael Stucki
I installed this kernel and booted it. Fan was running normal unless I
suspended & resumed. After it, the same problem happens again. So no,
the issue is not fixed in the mainline kernel.

I also checked the Git repository at git://git.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-
kernel-test/ubuntu/+source/linux/+git/mainline-crack. The tag v4.10.17
does not include the two commits mentioned above.

Since this is almost entirely a duplicate of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1709616, I am not
adding any more logs. I guess it won't help since only a backport of an
existing fix is needed.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1711951] [NEW] CPU fan goes full throttle triggered by waking up from suspend on Lenovo X1 Carbon (4th Gen., 2016)

2017-08-20 Thread Michael Stucki
Public bug reported:

This is a copy of a very similar bug report which is currently marked as
triaged and where my comment is ignored maybe because of that.

Please see my additional remarks at the end of this report.

---
Thinkpad X1 Carbon 5th generation ultrabook with i7 Kabylake CPU running Ubuntu
17.04 has its fan go full steam if the laptop is woken up from sleep/suspend.
Without any sleep/suspend the laptop's fan is basically "off" or silent, even
for hours.

The bug has been fixed upstream, see

6625914 ACPI / EC: Drop EC noirq hooks to fix a regression
9c40f95 Revert "ACPI / EC: Enable event freeze mode..." to fix a regression

and/or https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=196129
(with duplicate https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=191181)

and I hope this fix will make its way into a near-future kernel update
to ubuntu :)

Many thanks!

Additional remarks:

- Like mentioned in https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=191181, the bug
happens in other Lenovo models as well. It's not limited to the X1 Carbon 5th
Gen.

Reading through the comments, it's not exactly clear to me which of the
commits has fixed this problem, but I guess that the following two
changes have made the difference:

https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/9835823/
https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/9835825/

I am reporting this as a new issue because the fixes from 4.13 need to
be backported to 4.10 for users of the Ubuntu 16.04 HWE kernel.

Many thanks!

  - Like mentioned in https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=191181, the

5th Gen.
  - The bug was fixed in kernel 4.13 but not in 4.10. This means that users who
run the HWE kernel on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS will have this problem too!

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1680904] Re: zesty unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference

2017-08-16 Thread Michael Stucki
@kleber-souza It seems like the issue affects both Zesty and Xenial
(when using the HWE stack). Does that mean that we need an additional
tag "verification-done-xenial" or is it sufficient the way you write it
above? Thanks for clarifying!

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1709616] Re: CPU fan goes full throttle triggered by waking up from suspend on Lenovo X1 Carbon (5th Gen., 2017)

2017-08-15 Thread Michael Stucki
Two things:

- Like mentioned in https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=191181, the bug
happens in other Lenovo models as well. It's not limited to the X1 Carbon 5th
Gen.

Reading through the comments, it's not exactly clear to me which of the
commits has fixed this problem, but I guess that the following two
changes have made the difference:

https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/9835823/
https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/9835825/

So, will this bug be reopened or should I create a separate issue for
the 16.04 HWE kernel?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1680904] Re: zesty unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference

2017-07-27 Thread Michael Stucki
@chihchun Actually I could not install your kernel on 16.04 without
breaking dependencies. It requires binutils >= 2.29 (or 2.28, not sure
if I remember correctly) but Ubuntu 16.04 only includes version 2.26. So
I manually edited the config file in your archive to remove that
restriction. I guess other users will be affected by this, too...

Nevertheless, your kernel (4.10.0-28-generic #32 SMP Sat Jul 22 12:39:20
UTC 2017 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux) seems to fix the problem. At
least I never had any additional crashes since then...

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1690395] Re: CPU fan always on with kernel 4.10.0.20.22 (zesty) on a X1 Carbon 5th gen

2017-07-26 Thread Michael Stucki
I have exactly the same problem with linux-image-4.10.0-27-generic
(4.10.0-27.30~16.04.2) which was installed recently into Ubuntu 16.04
via linux-image-generic-hwe-16.04.

The problem only occurs after suspend and can be reproduced. With the
previous 4.8.0 kernel this did not occur.

My laptop is a Lenovo Carbon X1 4th gen.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1680904] Re: zesty unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference

2017-07-25 Thread Michael Stucki
I'm a user of the linux-image-generic-hwe-16.04 package on Ubuntu 16.04.
Until last weekend, I've never had this issue (using kernel 4.8.x) but
today on 4.10.0-27-generic this happened twice to me!

If there's a fix for this issue then it should be merged into this
release pretty quick...

zesty unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:

Status in linux source package in Zesty:
  In Progress

Bug description:
Upgraded to zesty about a week ago. Ran into this on latest kernel.
(during high load, nothing in particular seems to cause it to happen).

Did not happen with previous (4.10.0.14.16) kernel. Only after update
to 4.10.0.15.17, has happened about 3 times since then (or other
crashes), this is the one I could capture.

kern.log entries below. Let me know if you need anything else from me.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1566302] Re: Ubuntu 16.04: Suspend freezes the system after upgrade to linux image 4.4.0-16

2016-06-05 Thread Michael Stucki
I have a Lenovo Carbon X1 4th Gen which is most of the time connected to
a OneLink+ dock. I encounter the same problem with kernel 4.4.0-22:
Resume sometimes works, but sometimes not.

I have tested a few of the recent kernels available on
https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/ and here are my results:

Not booting with Ubuntu 16.04 on Lenovo Carbon X1 4th Gen:
-
drm-intel-next/2016-06-02-yakkety/linux-image-4.6.0-997-generic_4.6.0-997.201606012202_amd64.deb
-
drm-next/2016-06-03-yakkety/linux-image-4.7.0-996-generic_4.7.0-996.201606022202_amd64.deb

Boots but fails to resume on 1st try:
-
drm-next/2016-05-09-wily/linux-image-4.6.0-996-generic_4.6.0-996.201605082201_amd64.deb

Resumes fine:
-
drm-intel-nightly/2016-06-05-yakkety/linux-image-4.7.0-994-generic_4.7.0-994.201606042201_amd64.deb
-
daily/2016-06-05-yakkety/linux-image-4.7.0-999-generic_4.7.0-999.201606042201_amd64.deb

In both cases I've made a few resumes and also plugged the dock on and
off several times without any issues so far.

Currently I'm running the latest daily kernel and it seems to work good.

Ubuntu 16.04: Suspend freezes the system after upgrade to linux image
  4.4.0-16

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Won't Fix

Bug description:
  I'm using ubuntu 16.04 on a XPS 15 9550.

Suspend/resume worked flawlessly with linux image 4.4.0-15, and after
standard upgrade yesterday (5/04/2016) which installed image 4.4.0-16,
the system freezes when attempting a suspend. I get no response from
the system (nor keyboard, nor screen, nor touchpad), but it gets very
hot, so that it must be running something.

Booting with 4.4.0-15 makes the suspend to work perfectly.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1384597] Re: [drm/i915] stuck on render ring

2015-05-20 Thread Michael Stucki
Someone marked this as a duplicate of #1274779 but I do not agree. This
one is about a kernel fix (which only needs to be backported), whereas
the other issue affects the xorg driver.

The problem described here is still valid for me on Ubuntu 14.04. Can
anyone please backport the fix from above?
