2022-06-10 Thread Nikolai Kotsifas
I can confirm that 5.18.13 kernel has no flickers and no GRUB workaround
is needed.

2022-05-30 Thread Nikolai Kotsifas
Peter, I don't think it's a fix, but only a workaround that limits two
important power management functionalities (cpu cstates and gpu display
cstates). I hope and believe they're still working on finding a real fix
for the bug.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1970426] Re: [i915] screen is flickering in Ubuntu 22.04

2022-05-05 Thread Nikolai Kotsifas
In file /etc/default/grub I added to parameter GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT:
i915.enable_dc=0
intel_idle.max_cstate=2

updated grub and now I'm flicker free for a few days.

The last kernel without the flickering for me was the kernel that
shipped with 21.10

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1970426] Re: [i915] screen suddenly starts flickering after update

2022-05-02 Thread Nikolai Kotsifas
I can confirm that neither of the following fixed the bug:

GRUB Param `i915.enable_psr=0` did not fix
`intel_idle.max_cstate=4` did not fix
`intel_idle.max_cstate=0`did not fix
x11 session did not fix

Also, I noticed that when the screen starts flickering it only stops if
I move the cursor, if I type on my keyboard the flickering continues.

USB over thunderbolt turns off every once in a while

Status in Dell Sputnik:
  New
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I'm using a USB hub in the Dell TB16 (240W) connected to a Dell
  Precision 5520 using Thunderbolt 3.

Every so often (can be several times in an hour if I'm really unlucky,
some days it is less of a problem), the USB hub disconnects from the
computer and the devices connected to it lose power and stop
  responding.

disconnecting and reconnecting the USB cables has no effect. I can
restore functionality by instructing the xhci_hcd driver to unbind
from the USB 3.0 Host Controller in the dock and to rebind to it using
  the commands:

  echo -n ":0e:00.0" > /sys/bus/pci/drivers/xhci_hcd/unbind
  echo -n ":0e:00.0" > /sys/bus/pci/drivers/xhci_hcd/bind

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1853277] Re: Lenovo ThinkBook 14-IML Touchpad not showing up in /proc/bus/input/devices

2020-03-12 Thread Nikolai Kostrigin
Following logs show that your Ubuntu definitely thinks your laptop is
equipped with an ELAN touchpad (contrary to Windows opinion):

-

cat /sys/bus/acpi/devices/{ELAN,SYNA,CRQ}*/modalias
acpi:ELAN0632:PNP0C50:

cat /sys/bus/i2c/devices/*/name

Synopsys DesignWare I2C adapter
[...]
ELAN0632:00

cat /sys/bus/acpi/devices/{ELAN,SYNA,CRQ}*/status
0
15 - the only active state device is ELAN0632
0
0

Would you try blacklist drivers one-by-one:
1) blacklist elan_i2c
then check if this helps (somehow synaptics_i2c is triggered, so may be it is
just interfered by elan)
2) quit blacklisting elan_i2c
   blacklist synaptics_i2c
check either...

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1853277] Re: Lenovo ThinkBook 14-IML Touchpad not showing up in /proc/bus/input/devices

2020-03-11 Thread Nikolai Kostrigin
Somehow you've got two modules to be loaded simultaneously:

elan_i2c 40960 0
[...]
synaptics_i2c 20480 0

dmesg mentions ELAN0632:

[9.706424] i2c_hid i2c-ELAN0632:00: i2c-ELAN0632:00 supply vdd not found,
using dummy regulator
[9.706437] i2c_hid i2c-ELAN0632:00: i2c-ELAN0632:00 supply vddl not found,
using dummy regulator

but I didn't find SYNA2B60

It is not relevant to the bug, but your laptop also has one more ELAN device on
USB bus (fingerprint sensor)

[1.492202] usb 1-5: new full-speed USB device number 2 using xhci_hcd
[1.644710] usb 1-5: New USB device found, idVendor=04f3, idProduct=0c4b,
bcdDevice= 1.74
[1.644711] usb 1-5: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=0
[1.644712] usb 1-5: Product: ELAN:Fingerprint
[1.644713] usb 1-5: Manufacturer: ELAN

So would you please share your logs for:
dmidecode
cat /sys/bus/acpi/devices/{ELAN,SYNA,CRQ}*/modalias
cat /sys/bus/acpi/devices/{ELAN,SYNA,CRQ}*/status

cat /sys/bus/i2c/devices/*/name
ls /sys/bus/i2c/devices/*

Could you also check VID/PID pair for your touchpad in Windows to check
whether it is supported by the kernel you are using?

You may want to build latest stable or even mainline kernel for test
purposes...

2020-03-11 Thread Nikolai Kostrigin
@pavelcheto (pavelcheto),
does you touchpad operate in basic mode (like a mouse, without
two-finger-scrolling and other extended functions) ?

Would you mind sharing the output of at least:
dmesg
cat /proc/bus/input/devices
lsmod

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1853277] Re: Lenovo ThinkBook 14-IML Touchpad not showing up in /proc/bus/input/devices

2020-03-02 Thread Nikolai Kostrigin
I informed Lenovo support of the discussed issue on Feb,04 2020.
Since then I discovered an update [1] (CJCN25WW), but it still doesn't solve
the issue.

It's changelog said:

"Summary of changes
==
General Information:

CJCN25WW:
1. Update EC to CJEC27WW
2. Lenovo diagnostic of NOVO menu (04.11.000)
3. Intel release 2019 '2nd Security
4. BIOS initialize time (S3 resume)
5. Update thermal function for dGPU DPM"

Today, Mar,02 2020 one more BIOS update (CJCN26WW) [2] appeared on Lenovo's web
site with a change log saying:

"Summary of changes
==
General Information:

CJCN26WW:
1. Update EC to CJEC28WW"

Guess there is still no change to ACPI table, but didn't have a chance
to try it myself yet.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1853277] Re: Lenovo ThinkBook 14-IML Touchpad not showing up in /proc/bus/input/devices

2020-02-05 Thread Nikolai Kostrigin
Although I'm using OS ALT but I performed pretty much similar steps to
patch the ACPI DSDT table.

> In my case the output dsdt.dsl file contained some invalid error
output lines [...]

I also got multiple error messages which I commented for compile to
succeed

/*
*Firmware Error (ACPI): Could not resolve symbol [^GFX0.CLID], AE_NOT_FOUND
(20190509/dswload-496)
*Firmware Error (ACPI): Could not resolve symbol [^^PEG0.PEGP.DD1F],

 [...]
*Firmware Error (ACPI): Could not resolve symbol [^^^UBTC.STS7], AE_NOT_FOUND
(20190509/dswload2-477)
 */

> # Create or update /boot/grub/custom.cfg to contain
> acpi /fixed_dsdt.aml

In my case I used initrdefi grub command to overlay ACPI table:
initrdefi /boot/acpi_override /boot/initrd.img

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1853277] Re: Lenovo ThinkBook 14-IML Touchpad not showing up in /proc/bus/input/devices

2020-02-03 Thread Nikolai Kostrigin
Managed to get the touchpad operate on 15-IML applying the following:

Initially touchpad didn't operate at all under Linux.

0) UEFI firmware update to CJCN24WW revision
(https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/ru/ru/products/laptops-and-netbooks
/thinkbook-series/thinkbook-15-iml/downloads/driver-
list/component?name=BIOS)

Result: touch pad becomes operational, but no extra functions (multi-
touch scrolling, etc) available.

1) Kernel 5.4.15 + patch (https://lkml.org/lkml/2019/12/1/179)

Result: no change, as elan_i2c driver doesn't detect the device and is
not loaded

2) ACPI DSDT table patching (renaming -> ELAN062F),
https://github.com/realnickel/lenovo_thinkbook_iml15_touchpad_acpi_fix/commit/de0ca637f7d8de2164c787801b4af9d4ff586d67

Result: elan_i2c driver detects the hardware, full functional.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1846374] Re: Having a video playing/paused when switched to another user generates gigabytes of error logs

2019-12-03 Thread Nikolai
Oh, I just realized the flow stops when VLC stops when I stop VLC, and
it doesn't appear with other video players, so it's more a VLC problem,
and a workaround is simply to remove VLC and use a non buggy player
instead.

Title:
Having a video playing/paused when switched to another user generates
  gigabytes of error logs

Status in nvidia-graphics-drivers-418 package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  To replicate:

  1. Start a video playing, for example in vlc. 'avcodec decoder: Using
NVIDIA VDPAU Driver Shared Library 418.56 Fri Mar 15 12:31:51 CDT
  2019 for hardware decoding'

  2. Optionally pause it.

  3. Switch to another user.

The original user's ~/.xsession-errors will rapidly fill up with
errors along the lines of "vdpau_chroma filter error".

At the same time, errors are put in /var/log/syslog as well:

[7f9d604810a0] vdpau_chroma filter error: video mixer features failure:
An invalid handle value was provided.
[7f9d604810a0] vdpau_chroma filter error: video mixer attributes failure:
An invalid handle value was provided.
[7f9d604810a0] vdpau_chroma filter error: video mixer rendering failure:
An invalid handle value was provided.
  (repeat ad nauseum)

At least one of the two will rapidly fill up its partition and
  problems will arise.

With AMD video hardware and driver, the video continues playing - you
can hear the sound despite being in the other user.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1846374] Re: Having a video playing/paused when switched to another user generates gigabytes of error logs

2019-12-03 Thread Nikolai
Same here. My syslog fills up of
"Thunar.desktop[3491]: [7f0ee436b700] vdpau_chroma filter error: video
mixer features failure: An invalid handle value was provided."
lines at a rate of hundreds of MB per minute, until the system partition is
entirely full.

If I do "sudo truncate -s 0 /var/log/syslog", then I have a few minutes during
which I can send emails again, for example, but other than that, the system
partition is 100% full and many operations are therefore impossible.
This started happening after I bought a slightly less antiquated GPU for my
comp.
The NVidia X server setting app shows no problem, though.

2014-06-08 Thread Nikolai Alexihof
The upstream kernels are only available for x86 /x86_64. The Powermac G5
is equipped with a 64 bit PowerPC CPU.

I cannot test upstream because I cannot find a daily cdimage for PPC64.
This is not an AMD Macintosh but a PowerMac (iMac G5).

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1219368] Re: 14e4:4320 Airport Extreme (Broadcom BCM4306) not working on iMac G5

2014-03-09 Thread Nikolai Alexihof
After installing bw-fwcutter, the system complains that the correct
firmware cannot be installed.

After installing firmware-b43-installer, I get the following:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1219368] Re: 14e4:4320 Airport Extreme (Broadcom BCM4306) not working on iMac G5

2014-03-07 Thread Nikolai Alexihof
I was planning on reinstalling, and I left my iMac on while I went and
got install media, and it decided to boot all the way up.

With the installed kernel, I'm getting:

[ 210.709352] b43-phy0: Loading firmware version 508.1084 (2009-01-14 01:32:01)
[ 210.783377] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready

and the WLAN never enables.

2013-11-19 Thread Nikolai Alexihof
My systen doesn't use GRUB, it uses yaboot, and it doesn't obviously
offer a previous kernel.

I'm pretty sure I tried both of the kernels it did offer when I tried to
boot, and both failed.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1219368] Re: 14e4:4320 Airport Extreme (Broadcom BCM4306) not working on iMac G5

2013-11-12 Thread Nikolai Alexihof
Please note that before I installed your kernel, my system did boot just
fine, and was running the most recent stock kernel as of the opening
date of this bug (2013-09-01). In fact, upgrading to that kernel is
what killed my wireless, which worked fine before I did an apt-get dist-
upgrade.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1219368] Re: 14e4:4320 Airport Extreme (Broadcom BCM4306) not working on iMac G5

2013-09-11 Thread Nikolai Alexihof
When I use my daily CD of Saucy Salamander from 3 days ago, it crashes
the kernel (I get an oops).

See attached log.

Process:

Boot lubuntu live CD.

apt-get install firmware-b43-installer
rmmod b43
modprobe -v b43

Notwithstanding, jwiedmann's comment in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1219368/comments/9
looks clearly applicable to my situation.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1219368] Re: 14e4:4320 Airport Extreme (Broadcom BCM4306) not working on iMac G5

2013-09-10 Thread Nikolai Alexihof
@penalvch: I finally found a daily build for PPC at
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/lubuntu/daily-live/current/ and have
downloaded it but not yet tested it.

@jwiedmann: Do I need to do anything to get an SRU? That wiki link
pointed me to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/KernelUpdates which
implies that action needs to be done, but I don't understand what, if
anything, I need to do in this context.

I'll report back on the daily as soon as I can.

I cannot test upstream because I cannot find a daily cdimage for PPC64.
This is not an AMD Macintosh but a PowerMac (iMac G5).

The upstream kernels are only available for x86 /x86_64. The Powermac G5
is equipped with a 64 bit PowerPC CPU.
