[Kernel-packages] [Bug 381059] Re: use zram-config by default

2013-12-05 Thread Lionel Sausin - Numérigraphe
The Ubuntu kernels also have zswap since Saucy.
It may be a simpler option, needing only a change to the kernel command-line (
add "zswap.enabled=1" ).

There is already zram-config in Ubuntu, a package to enable compressed
  RAM swap: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/zram-config

Starting with kernel 3.8 zram (a rewrite of older compcache) is out of
staging. Please enable it by default.

  === Original description ===

Including compcache by default can have a number of benefits for the
average, and not so average, Ubuntu user.

For the average user, compcache will decrease disk swapping, which
will increase perceived performance and decrease hits, which for
laptop users will improve battery life. Since many users use laptops
and netbooks these days, this is a big audience and would make many
people happy. Desktop users will also benefit, as their disks will be
less active and their electric bills may go down a tiny bit.

For the not-so-average user, such as those that run virtualization,
they can run more VMs. With Ubuntu striving to be bigger in the server
space, this could be a big deal. For me, I (unfortunately) run Windows
in KVM, and it appears that enabling compcache improves my VM's
  performance.

Embedded devices and netbooks (such as those that run Ubuntu Netbook
Remix) will benefit, as they have little RAM, and since compcache sort
of increases RAM, it will make these devices more capable.

Since compcache is already in the Ubuntu kernel (see bug 200765), the
only thing left is to either add an initramfs script or a udev script
(IMHO, the udev approach is cleaner) as described here:
  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Compcache

  compcache: http://code.google.com/p/compcache/

  Thanks!

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1173423] Re: Kernel fails to update EFI vars, rendering system unbootable [P8P67 PRO REV 3.1, BIOS 1904 08/15/2011]

2013-09-16 Thread Numérigraphe
Hi, I seem to have hit this same bug with linux-image-generic-lts-raring
3.8.0-30.44~precise1 in Precise.
Was this fix applied in the 3.8 kernel in the Raring stack in 12.04.3LTS ?

After an upgrade, my system failed to boot. Fortunately I was able to
run the EFI shell and manually launch grub. From there I discovered
that the EFI boot catalog contained no entry for GRUB. It appears
there has been a regression in kernels later than 3.8.0-7 that causes
it to fail to update the EFI variables. After running grub-install,
it reports no errors, yet fails to show the efi boot catalog as it
does when it works. Manually running efivars shows the ubuntu entry
has been removed. Checking dmesg shows:

  [   25.981816] efivars: set_variable() failed: status=8009

This happens on kernels 3.8.0-{15,19,23} but works correctly in -{6,7}.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 351536] Re: files on read-only win98 shares can't be opened on Hardy using cifs

Bug description:
It looks like Hardy can't open files on Windows 98 shares when they
  are shared for read only.

  Steps to reproduce :
  - Create a read-only share a folder on Win98 host.
  - on Hardy, as root :
- mount -t cifs //WINHOST/SHARENAME /mnt/ -o
dir_mode=0700,file_mode=0700,guest,servern=WINHOST
- cat /mnt/some_test.txt
=> you get an error message - I got either "permission denied" from my
production server, or "host is down" from my workstation.

  Workaround :
Make the share read-writeable in Windows 98.

This was observed on both the server and desktop kernels.
This seems fixed in Intrepid, but as a LTS release Hardy would benefit from a
fix.

Possible fix : a forum entry for a similar problem on another distro
points to this change in the newer upstream kernels, which might be a
  cure:

A dkms package was produced in 2011 (see

  == Original Report ==

  Hello,

So far I've been having a problem with my Elantech multitouch trackpad in
Linux. Basically all i get is right click, left click, and tap to click, along
with basic movement. The problem seems to be rooted in improper detection of
the trackpad, likely b/c its a new revision or whatnot. Of note is that working
elantech trackpads of the past in forums i scouted through show up as "ETPS/2
Elantech Touchpad". Mine just shows up in xinput as "PS/2 Elantech Touchpad". I
think this might be a simple fix in the end, just improper detection, I hope.
For reference, I've tried kernel 3.5 on Ubuntu 12.10 and kernel 3.8.0-17 on
Ubuntu 13.04 thus far, with all combinations of psmouse.

2013-07-20 Thread Numérigraphe
Hi,
Using the kernel in http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~jsalisbury/lp1166442/raring/ in
Raring, the multitouch now works fine in my Samsung NP900-X3E-A02FR (recent
Series 9 13" Full-HD). Tested with 2-fingers-scrolling and 3-fingers-clicking.
