After boot, I'm shown the GDM login screen (which I shouldn't; I have auto login enabled), and logging in just takes me back to the same user selection screen even though the password is correct. If I switch to a TTY and run `sudo pkill gnome-session-binary`, logging in through GDM starts working again. I should add that the do-release-upgrade was rocky; I did it in a terminal from within gnome, went away for a while, and when I returned, I just saw an Ubuntu 19.10 in a TTY. I was able to do `sudo dpkg --configure -a` and complete the upgrade, but I don't know if something's still messed up due to that. @Daniel Van Vugt. I appreciate your feedback, and I do very much appreciate it, However I think it is worth a try. I think it is more of Nvidia screwing with us rather than we creating problems for ourselves, It is like a chicken and and egg situation, You enable nvidia- drm.modeset=1 and then you have flicker free boot and potential to suffer from other bugs (Most of them are unconfirmed for the want of testing). Did a Fresh Install today, and Selected the option to automatically install proprietary drivers, Something changed and my Installation Failed, I got a message saying that there was already a bug for that, I followed along and updated my situation in that bug report, because why not, It is just a 2 Minute Job. So this time around I changed the kernel parameters before installing Nvidia Drivers using the ubuntu-drivers autoinstall command. I edited by /etc/default/grub and I added nvidia-drm.modeset=1, Did not remove splash or any other parameters. I then ran sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall and waited for that to finish, Once done, I ran sudo update-grub. Then rebooted. This way I now have the flicker free boot/Animation and I can get into the desktop without any issues, GDM autologin works absolutely fine. I rebooted again just to be sure, and things stayed good. I wanted to update here so others can benefit while the bug is addressed. This is a working solution for me. Fresh install with proprietary driver’s installation check box ticked worked fine till I rebooted again and then I could not get into the desktop. All drivers installed fine but one reboot later things were back to being unable to login. I have tried With Xenial 16.04 Linux Kernel 4.3 and The issue is still there. Now Something Interesting. I have a Lenovo z50-70 Laptop with Hybrid Graphics. So II have to use Bumblebee for getting proper use of the Nvidia Card on the Laptop. I have to first use nomodeset kernel parameter to even boot up. Then Once In install bumblebee and things look great. However the moment I use bumblebee for Launching any application, Something changes, Not sure what. and next reboot produces this black screen and the Intern DRM messages. I remove bumblebee nvidia etc nothing helps. I keep getting this black screen. So Things work great if I don't use bumblebee at all, I can reboot system etc... No worries, However the system breaks with the first reboot after using Bumblebee to launch any app for the first time. Even if I ran glxinfo | grep OpenGL with primusrun or Optirun. Things no longer stay the same. The session carries on fine, However the moment I reboot the machine/Restart X. Things are black. I think there is a regression somewhere with Bumblebee breaking the Intel OpenSource Driver. Or maybe Nvidia -Closed Source Driver breaking Intel Driver... Honestly I can't figure it out. I am having to go back to 14.04 now. I was really hoping that this would get fixed soon. I think this might have its presence in the 16.04 Cycle as well. Update :- After using Kernel 3.19 for a while I received a Kernel Update to Kernel 4.2 Now I am running kernel 4.2.0-18-generic Now everything seems to work. I have the same hardware as Benedikt . Lenovo z50-70 Laptop. I am running Ubuntu 15.10. I have had no success with Kernel 4.3. Now with Kernel 4.2.0-18-generic all seems to work. Update :- Downgrading to Kernel 3.19.8-031908-generic solves the problem for me. Not sure what is wrong. Any of the 4.X Series Kernels won't work for me. I am on a Lenovo Z50 Laptop. Now with Kernel 3.19.8-031908-generic my system is working great. No error whatsoever. Affects my laptop as well. All is OK after installation. However the first reboot after the installation results in this problem.
