[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2038745] Re: NV31 XTX cannot boot into Ubuntu 22.04.3 Desktop with upstream(inbox) driver installed

2023-10-10 Thread Rayke
I have just installed linux-firmware_20230323.gitbcdcfbcf-0ubuntu1.8_all
on 23.04 and it has fixed the display freezing at boot problem for me
with a Navi 31 [Radeon RX 7900 XT/7900 XTX].

NV31 XTX/XTW cannot boot into Ubuntu 22.04.3 after upgrading distro to
latest Ubuntu 22.04.3 kernel and firmware

Not repro with NV21 XL or W6800

  [Fix]
  Cherry-pick the latest PMFW
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git/tree/amdgpu/smu_13_0_0.bin

  [Other Info]

The IMU FW included in Linux firmware package needs to be paired with
the latest PMFW smu_13_0_0.bin for Navi31

Jammy firmware updates only include latest IMU firmware.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2038864] Re: 20230323.gitbcdcfbcf-0ubuntu1.7 hangs on boot with amdgpu

2023-10-09 Thread Rayke
I just reported the same issue

Title:
20230323.gitbcdcfbcf-0ubuntu1.7 hangs on boot with amdgpu

Status in linux-firmware package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  [Impact]

20230323.gitbcdcfbcf-0ubuntu1.7 borks amdgpu during boot, it
completely hangs the entire kernel on a RX 7900 XTX. Reverting back to
20230323.gitbcdcfbcf-0ubuntu1.2 made the kernel boot properly again.

  [Fix]

  Revert AMD firmware updates.

  [Test Case]

Boot a machine with an affected AMD GPU.

  [Where Problems Could Occur]

Machines with AMD GPUs might not boot or crash.

This on Ubuntu 23.04 and 6.2.0-34-generic, but since the previous
firmware worked I assume that the kernel version is not important here
and it more is that the 1.7 update contains a firmware for the
rx7900xtx that hangs it. Also booting to recovery and trying to enter
non-graphical recovery mode worked just fine.

This may be a very similar issue to
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-firmware/+bug/2029396

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2038867] [NEW] Linux firmware 1.7 prevents system with AMD 7900XT from booting

2023-10-09 Thread Rayke
Public bug reported:

I just upgraded my System76 Thelio running 23.04 with a Navi 31 [Radeon
RX 7900 XT/7900 XTX] GPU. It seems this update causes my displays to
freeze very early in the boot process. I see some basic messages and
then some screen corruption and that is where the screen remains.

I was able to ssh into it from another machine and downgrade the linux-
firmware package to 1.6 which fixed the display freeze problem.

The problem package is

20230323.gitbcdcfbcf-0ubuntu1.7

Reverting to

20230323.gitbcdcfbcf-0ubuntu1.6

fixes it.

** Affects: linux-firmware (Ubuntu)
