[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1813873] Re: Userspace break as a result of missing patch backport

2019-02-17 Thread Rehan Khamaruddin
I think I may have run into another issue related to the same bug. While
the login loop problem appears to have been fixed, the fix does not seem
to have cascaded down to other prompts that one may encounter in special
circumstances. In my case, I had an external USB drive connected to my
server and this happened to have been powered off (physically) when
booting. As expected, the system did not complete the boot process and
stopped (momentarily) at the "Enter Ctrl-D etc" prompt to allow repair.
Well, it just kept going. I was unable to get in at all and eventually
just had to physically reset the box and reconnect power to the USB
drive. So the looping that used to happen at the console login persists
when dropping to the emergency shell. I will be grateful if anyone else
can confirm. Just add a spurious entry to fstab and try to reboot.

  Hi,

The most recent set of Ubuntu kernels applied a variety of tty patches
  including:

https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/c96cf923a98d1b094df9f0cf97a83e118817e31b

https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/d3736d82e8169768218ee0ef68718875918091a0
  patch.

This second patch is required to prevent a rather serious regression
where userspace applications reading from stdin can receive EAGAIN
  when they should not.

I will try to link correspondence from the mailing list archives once
they are available, but for now if you have access to the linux-
console mailing list you can find discussion under the thread
"Userspace break? read from STDIN returns EAGAIN if tty is "touched"".

I would appreciate it if this could be examined soon as it is a
  regression on userspace.

  Thanks
  Michael

I am running 18.04 with linux-image-generic-hwe-18.04 installed. I can
confirm that the issue has been resolved with the latest kernel which is
4.18.0-15-generic.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1665911] Re: Linux 4.8 hangs system when playing video

2017-02-22 Thread Rehan Khamaruddin
I have tested with 4.10 (linux-
image-4.10.0-041000-generic_4.10.0-041000.201702191831_amd64) and can
confirm that the lockup can be reproduced in this kernel as well.

Some additional information that may help:

1. This is a multiboot machine and I have Arch and Manjaro installed. I can
reproduce the lockup on both (kernel 4.9x) so this definitely appears to be
something to do with kernel.
2. The problem seems to also be network related as the lockups occur most
frequently with streaming video.

Kernel 4.4x LTS is rock-solid and does not exhibit this behavior.

Let me know what else I can do to help troubleshoot and identify the
issue.

Thanks.

Further update: It appears that the lockup happens only when streaming
video and not when playing local files. There is a possibility that
could be network related. Definitely does not happen with the 4.4x
kernel.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1665911] Re: Linux 4.8 hangs system when playing video

2017-02-18 Thread Rehan Khamaruddin
I downgraded the nvidia driver to nvidia-current-updates (304). The
system locked-up again while playing videos but this time around it came
back for a few seconds. While the mouse and keyboard were not
responsive, I was able to see the video move rapidly and my conky
scripts were updating for the same period. The logs above are from the
session immediately following the hard reset. The only interesting info
in the logs is reproproduced below:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1665911] Re: Linux 4.8 hangs system when playing video

2017-02-18 Thread Rehan Khamaruddin
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected xenial

** Description changed:

I recently updated to the 16.04.2 LTS release and installed the new HWE
stack which installed kernel 4.8. Ever since, my machine completely
freezes when playing video (eg. Youtube). I have to power off or hard
reset using physical buttons to recover. Nothing seems to be written to
  the logs.

Please let me know how to get additional information to help diagnose
  the issue.

  Thanks.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1665911] Re: Linux 4.8 hangs system when playing video

2017-02-18 Thread Rehan Khamaruddin
Changing status to confirmed per instructions received in email. The
system crash does not permit apport bug reporting as apport simply
doesn't detect a crash. The hard freeze of the system is preventing logs
from being written to disk.

** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu)
   Status: Incomplete => Confirmed

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1387922] Re: Problem resuming from suspend after update to 3.13.0-39-generic

2014-12-07 Thread Rehan Khamaruddin
Well, I got nowhere by tracing it backwards. In the meanwhile, the
linux-image-generic-lts-utopic pacakage has appeared and it solves my
problem. I guess this bug report can be closed now.

Re: [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1387922] Re: Problem resuming from suspend after update to 3.13.0-39-generic

2014-11-15 Thread Rehan Khamaruddin
Christopher,

I have found some more quirks along the way. The problem was
reproducible going back all the way to linux-image-3.13.0-32-generic but
it doesn't happen immediately as it does with linux-
image-3.13.0-39-generic. Also, do I need to map this back and test the
mainline also? I haven't been able to put in as much time as I had
anticipated so it is going slow. Please advise.

Thanks.

Rehan Khamaruddin, the next step is to fully reverse commit bisect from
kernel 3.13 to 3.16 in order to identify the last bad commit, followed
immediately by the first good one. Once this commit has been identified,
then it may be reviewed as a candidate for backporting into your
  release.

Could you please do this following

  ?

Please note, finding adjacent kernel versions is not fully commit
  bisecting.

2014-11-15 Thread Rehan Khamaruddin
To explain a bit further, I don't remember encountering this issue
before linux-image-3.13.0-39-generic. Could it be that the issue is with
some other package installed along with the kernel, perhaps, firmware? I
am unable to reproduce the problem with 3.16. Please note that I am not
a developer or even an expert Linux user and could be way off the track
here.

Thanks.

Re: [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1387922] Re: Problem resuming from suspend after update to 3.13.0-39-generic

2014-11-04 Thread Rehan Khamaruddin
I tried the live image (on usb) and it does not exhibit the issue I
encountered with suspend in the production release. Please let me know
if you need anything else tested. Note that the testing was cursory. I
did not let it sit overnight as I did with the dev kernels.

Thanks.

Rehan Khamaruddin, then you may be falling into a broke/fix/broke
 scenario with kernel versions.

In order to further narrow this down, could you please test for this in
 http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ (live environment is fine)
 and advise to the results?

2014-11-03 Thread Rehan Khamaruddin
Using the method outlined in the wiki, I found that the problem seems to be
fixed in 3.16.0-031600-generic. I haven't tested all the way forward till 3.18
or back to 3.13. Is this sufficient?

Rehan Khamaruddin, the next step is to fully commit bisect the kernel in
order to identify the offending commit. Could you please do this
 following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection ?

2014-11-02 Thread Rehan Khamaruddin
I tried booting both rc1 and rc2. Testing is inconclusive because I could not
proceed beyond the login screen. I did test suspend from the login screen but
could not get video on resume. However, the computer did not go to sleep again.
I am not sure if this is reliable. Please advise on how to proceed.

Thanks for your patience.

Hence, did you actually test 3.18-rc1?

I have tried the kernels from this folder (amd64):
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.13.11.10-trusty/

I can reproduce the problem with the new mainline kernel also. Please
let me know if this is the version that you wanted me to test. If it is,
I shall go ahead and tag it as outlined by you before.

Rehan Khamaruddin, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu
better. Could you please test the latest upstream kernel available from the
very top line at the top of the page (not the daily folder) following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional
upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream
kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If
this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
 kernel-fixed-upstream
 kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested exactly
 shown as:
 kernel-fixed-upstream-3.18-rc1

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil
icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
 kernel-bug-exists-upstream
 kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's
Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your
 understanding.

Re: [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1387922] Re: Problem resuming from suspend after update to 3.13.0-39-generic

2014-11-01 Thread Rehan Khamaruddin
There doesn't seem to be a build for trusty. Modules don't compile with
3.18. Shall I test with 3.15? That seems to be the latest for trusty.

Thanks.

Rehan Khamaruddin, latest mainline kernel is 3.18-rc2. Did you test
that? If that does not allow a testable scenario, please test 3.18-rc1.
