[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2051999] Re: Grub2 2.06 has upstream bug that results in Non-booting with ZFS after snapshot of bpool.

2024-02-12 Thread Ryan C. Underwood
If you're using zfs-auto-snapshot, you can tell it to ignore bpool by
setting the com.sun:auto-snapshot property to false on the bpool
dataset:

# zfs set com.sun:auto-snapshot=false bpool

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1715861] Re: r592 & r852 IRQ: DMA errors cause excessive log file entries

Title:
r592 & r852 IRQ: DMA errors cause excessive log file entries

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
-- /var/log/syslog and /var/log/kern.log grow to 100s of MiB in less
  than a day. --

Typical excessive syslog entry is attached (hostname redacted). I am not
making hardware changes at the times these entries are made. Entires are of the
form:
  Sep 7 20:05:55 kernel: [14098.011547] r592: IRQ: card added
  Sep 7 20:05:55 kernel: [14098.011548] r592: IRQ: DMA error

followed by 38 lines of trace information

The laptop reports itself as having the problematic Ricoh devices. Relevant
hwinfo attached. grepped extract follows
Model: "Ricoh R5C832 IEEE 1394 Controller"
Vendor: pci 0x1180 "Ricoh Co Ltd"
Model: "Ricoh xD-Picture Card Controller"
Vendor: pci 0x1180 "Ricoh Co Ltd"
Model: "Ricoh R5C822 SD/SDIO/MMC/MS/MSPro Host Adapter"
Vendor: pci 0x1180 "Ricoh Co Ltd"
Model: "Ricoh R5C592 Memory Stick Bus Host Adapter"
Vendor: pci 0x1180 "Ricoh Co Ltd"

WORKAROUND: Blacklist devices by adding the following lines at the end
  of /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

  # Stop errors filling up log - see
  # https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1530187
  # Blacklist Ricoh card reader
  blacklist r592
  blacklist r852

This stops messages from appearing in /var/log/kern.log and
/var/log/syslog. The Ricoh cardreader built into the laptop still
reads SD cards after such blacklisting.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1685442] Re: Errors: flip_done timed out during boot-up; slow boot

Title:
Errors: flip_done timed out during boot-up; slow boot

Status in Linux:
  Confirmed
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I had been running Ubuntu 16.04 LTS on many laptop computers
(especially Dell D620, D630, E6400) with no problem.

I created a Live USB with Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS and tried it on a Dell
D630. It was very slow to boot up (about 90 seconds) as opposed to
the 30-45 seconds it usually takes. For a few seconds there were error
messages that included the phrase "flip_done timed out".

When the Ubuntu desktop appeared, the mouse cursor hung for a while,
but then came back to life. I didn't do much testing from there. I
did a Live session with the 16.04.2 LTS on a different D630 laptop,
  and the same problem occureed.

I Googled the problem, and found several hits.
  -
On an Arch forum, someone reported the problem on a Dell D630, like mine. It
also occured on other laptops:
  https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=218581

The suggestion was that the bug was related to kernel version 4.8.x
and the 965GM chipset, which is what the D630 has.

So I tried Ubuntu Mate 16.04.2 on a Dell D620 (with a 945GM chipset) and the
problem DID NOT occur.
  ---
For a similar boot-up problem, Ubuntu Forum suggested going back to an
earlier version of Ubuntu.
  https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2348892

I tried Ubuntu Mate 16.04.1 (with the 4.4.0-31-generic kernel), and
  the problem did NOT occur.

So I'm solving the problem for myself by using Ubuntu Mate 16.04.1 LTS rather
than 16.04.2.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1767808] Re: "drm timed out" with driver i915 + Intel Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics with Kernel 4.15

Title:
"drm timed out" with driver i915 + Intel Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated
  Graphics with Kernel 4.15

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
With Ubuntu 18.04 + Kernel 4.15, at boot time there are many periods when the
boot freezes before the timeout of 10 seconds with Intel Mobile GM965/GL960
Integrated Graphics (driver i915).
In total it is 198 seconds that are lost in these timeouts during boot, more
than 3 minutes!

Regression is present since linux kernel 4.8 (with Ubuntu 16.04).

To fix, explicitly disable the port with an i915 module setting with
video=SVIDEO-1:d in the kernel command line parameter in the bootloader.
  1/ sudo gedit /etc/default/grub
  2/ add "video=SVIDEO-1:d" to "GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT" line
  3/ sudo update-grub

After applying this, the system boots up much faster, there are no
  "drm ... timed out" messages.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1183690] Re: dkms only using one core for compiling

Fixed in 2.2.0.3-4 and above from Debian https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-

Unfortunately, looks like only older versions are available in Ubuntu

Status in dkms package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
I've set my CONCURRENCY_LEVEL variable to 8 to use all CPU cores of

But whenever dkms needs to compile something, like e.g. the vboxdrv,
it only uses one single core (can be seen with htop) and thus takes a
  lot longer.

This is on Ubuntu 13.04 with dkms 2.2.0.3-1.1ubuntu2. I also noticed
this on Quantal with older dkms versions.
