Title:
  plasmashell leaks memory uncontrollably

Status in plasma-workspace package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
I'm not sure if this is a problem with the plasmashell executable
itself, or the the nvidia libraries, or perhaps plasmashell not
interacting with the nvidia libraries correctly, but for the past
several months I've noticed that the memory usage of plasmashell
creeps slowly and consistently upward the longer it is running.

This is at the level for me that within a day or two after
(re)starting it, it is taking up all of my 12 gigs of ram and my my
swap space engages and my system starts thrashing to the point that it
takes minutes to get to a console to killall plasmashell. If I'm not
sure if I'll even get to that point, I do SysRq+F (Sometimes it locks
up completely -- presumably due to a kernel panic -- if I don't catch
the extensive thrashing before too long, but that's a secondary
  issue.)

This problem began several months ago (I was sort of expecting someone
would quickly patch it, so I lived with it for a bit) so unfortunately
  I can't point to a specific version number. I did run apport-valgrind
on plasmashell (output to be attached), which is what implicates the
  nvidia drivers.

Happy to provide any additional information requested or to try other
  versions of these applications.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1684240] Re: Lagging square around mouse pointer

2024-04-01 Thread Scarlett Gately Moore
According to this bug: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=382812 the
issue is not plasma-workspace, nor sddm, nor nvidia, but xorg and
according to it the bug has been fixed in xorg. Closing now, if the bug
still persists please reopen with details on a supported release.

Title:
  Lagging square around mouse pointer

Status in plasma-workspace package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
(This can also be an nvidia related problem)

Mouse pointer behaves as if it has an invisible square attached to it.
This square covers some area next to the pointer, but it is not always
clear exactly where (a link to a screenshot is shown below, please
note the white square with some text from the previous webpage
  displayed in that window).

This makes selecting text difficult, as one never knows where exactly
the selection ends. Also, scrolling in some windows becomes
problematic, as the pointer shadows a part of the scrollbar. When a
text is being typed, one needs to make sure that the pointer is parked
sufficiently far from the text (so, to make a long story short, this
  is very annoying).

This behavior does not depend on the choice of the cursor theme.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2045093] Re: After waking from sleep moving to a different virtual desktop shows a black screen on X11

2024-03-27 Thread Scarlett Gately Moore

Title:
After waking from sleep moving to a different virtual desktop shows a
  black screen on X11

Status in nvidia-graphics-drivers-535 package in Ubuntu:
  New
Status in plasma-desktop package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
After enabling Virtual Desktops when I wake up from sleep and switch
desktops I get a black screen.

  Steps:

  1. Log in with Plasma on X11
  2. In System Settings select Workspace Behaviour > Virtual Desktops
  3. Create a layout of 2x2 (two rows with two desktops each)
  4. Put the system to sleep
  5. Wake the system up and enter your credentials
  6. Switch to a different desktop to the one you are wither with a key
combination or clicking on it on the taskbar.

  Outcome:

A black screen will be shown instead of the desktop. If you try to go
back to the original desktop you will still have a black screen.

  Expectation:
For the system to switch virtual desktops without any issues.

  Workaround:

  1. Change virtual terminals using Control-Alt-F4, for example.
  2. Change back to the GUI virtual terminal with Control-Alt-F1
  3. The graphical interface is restored and you can switch between virtual
desktops without problems.

Alternatively I imagine that removing virtual desktops would work, but that
reduces functionality.

  Things I tried:

  1. I purged all the nvidia drivers and installed the last version 535.
It worked briefly but it quickly reverted to the same issue.

  2. I have tried login using Plasma on Wayland and I can't reproduce
the problem. Unfortunately I have some applications that aren't
supported yet that require using X11.

Freeze on system-resume caused by kwin and amdgpu driver

Bug description:
This is a well investigated bug by me.

Problem: a black screen freeze occurs by suspend-resume process
Ubuntu version: Kubuntu 19.10 default plasma, or the backported 5.17
Kernel version: default 5.3.10 or the mainline 5.4.0rc3
xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu: 19.* or the newest from git, the 18.0.1-1 works
well

This freeze can be reproduced only if opengl 2.0 or 3.1 compositor is
enabled in Plasma settings. Xrender is OK however I don't like screen
  tearing.

On Ubuntu 19.10 Gnome desktop (X based) this doesn't occur even if the
Gnome's compositor is enabled. (I don't know what is the default one
there but I haven't disabled it)

I think this is a Kwin / amdgpu driver related bug because of the
differentiation. These can be fixed even in Kwin/opengl compositor not
just in the amdgpu driver or in kernel.

One possible solution: disable opengl compositor by suspend and re-
enable it after login. Use fe.: Xrender before login / before the
  system restored from suspend.

For Ubuntu's maintainers: Couldn't be this problem solved by a
downstream solution? Maybe a proper script could be enough by resume
and by suspend. There are a lot of bugs like this reported in
freedesktop bugreport and the developers haven't got enough time for
  fix them fast enough.
