[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1933880] Re: systemd-logind crash when suspend with nvidia-suspend.service masked, bringing session down with it

2022-06-04 Thread Shuhao
Can confirm that removing the .service files in
/etc/systemd/system/systemd-suspend.service.requires works.

The reason this occurred to me is because i switched GPU from nvidia to
AMD, and some programs thought I have nvenc (because the library is
installed) when i don't, which necessitates the removal of the nvidia-
driver packages.

This seem like an issue with one of the nvidia package's postrm debian
package scripts as opposed to systemd, tho.

Title:
systemd-logind crash when suspend with nvidia-suspend.service masked,
  bringing session down with it

Status in nvidia-graphics-drivers-465 package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in systemd package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Run `sudo apt install nvidia-driver-465`. Then, without a need for a
restart, run `sudo apt autoremove nvidia-driver-465`.
  2. Leaving the terminal open, suspend the machine.

Expected behavior: the machine suspend successfully and can be woken up
successfully.
Actual behavior: the machine doesn't suspend. It either:
  - hang with no respond other than SysRq+REISUB (or maybe network, but I
didn't test), or
  - return you back to the login screen. Upon logging in, you'll notice that
the terminal you opened is gone.

Upon further inspection (on a session that doesn't hang), it's been
found that X server died with:

  Fatal server error:
  [66.422] (EE) systemd-logind disappeared (stopped/restarted?)

And checking journal for systemd-logind log, it said:

Error during inhibitor-delayed operation (already returned success to
  client): Unit nvidia-suspend.service is masked.

before the new process takes it place.

The system is Ubuntu 20.04, X.org session.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1824559] Re: Lenovo Yoga mouse is slow & laggy in bluetooth mode (low polling frequency)

2019-09-09 Thread Shuhao
I just reproduced this issue with a bluetooth mouse 3600 on 18.04.3 LTS
on a thinkpad x230.

Lenovo Yoga mouse is slow & laggy in bluetooth mode (low polling

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Hello,
I have an issue with a lenovo yoga mouse.
This mouse has 2 working mode either bluetooth or with a provided usb dongle.
USB dongle works fine, but bluetooth don't.
  Cursor is slow and laggy.
"evhz" (https://gitlab.com/iankelling/evhz) reports 22Hz in bluetooth mouse
while USB mode and other mouse reports 125Hz.
  Polling speed is too slow.

I tried different howto suggesting to change usbhid mousepoll value => does
not help.
The mouse seems handled by btusb module, not usbhid (modprobe -r usbhid
killed my other mouse, but not the lenovo, while modprobe -r btusb killed the
lenovo).

  I tried 2 laptops (XPS9370 with 18.04, kernel 4.18 and kernek 5.07 and
an older dell Precision M6400 16.04 kernel 4.15).

Bluetooth pairing works well, either with gnome bluetooth interface or
  with "bluetoothctl"

Both laptops reports ~20-22Hz polling speed with evhz (and same laggy
  behavior)

I also tried 2 bluetooth interface on the XPS13 9370 : the integrated
bluetooth and a Sabrent USB Bluetooth 4.0 (to connect with the
Sabrent, I have switched off integrated bluetooth with rfkill).

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1521245] Re: Kinect Device keeps on disconnecting and reconnecting every two seconds

2016-01-14 Thread Shuhao
I just disabled usb autosuspend and this problem went away. It's quite
late so I can't get more detailed information for now.

To disable:

sudo -s
echo -1 > /sys/module/usbcore/parameters/autosuspend

This is not resolved, as this behaviour seems wrong, still.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1521245] Re: Kinect Device keeps on disconnecting and reconnecting every two seconds

2016-01-13 Thread Shuhao
So I have issues on 2/3 of my tested devices, running different kernel +
different version of ubuntu. I don't want to confirm this because Im
beginning to suspect that this is not a kernel issue at all, but some
sort of configuration issue (probably default configuration of certain
services), given the regularity (every n seconds exactly). I was
wondering if there is a list of services i can check out or something.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1521245] Re: Kinect Device keeps on disconnecting and reconnecting every two seconds

2016-01-12 Thread Shuhao
I'm going to leave this as incomplete as I cannot find a kernel version
where this doesn't show up. There's only one computer that I have that
doesn't experience this issue and it is on 15.04.

At this point I'm suspecting some system service fiddling with the usb
system? Consider how regular the intervals are. Is there a list of the
services somewhere that I can look at and then check individually?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1521245] Re: Kinect Device keeps on disconnecting and reconnecting every two seconds

2015-12-04 Thread Shuhao
I just installed 15.04's kernel but it's still doing the same thing.
What other components can cause this? Systemd?

Not quite sure how I should approach now, can I install kernels below
4.2 on wily? Will that cause major issues?

Back on 4.2.0-18-generic. Experience this once per day. Screen keeps
changing but no more response to any input. May just be hardware giving
out.

Title:
Hard lockup but certain UI elements keeps changing

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I recently upgraded to Wily and I discovered that my system hard
freezes about 2-3 times a day. This is the usual: unresponsive
keyboard (including magic sysrq), unresponsive USB, no response to
pings over the network, music/audio loops, as well as no evidence of
  errors in syslog, kern.log, Xorg.log.

However, there's one very unusual aspect of this lockup: I have an on
screen clock to the second and when the lockup occurs, the clock keeps
ticking by the second! This means that code must be executing
somewhere... This happened all but one occurance of hard freeze, where
the clock also froze. In fact, I was on Facebook at one point and saw
that I was disconnected. The facebook UI then followed up with the
  animation of "Reconnecting... 10... 9... 8...".

I feel like posting here is a very long shot, but maybe someone else
  has something similar.

Next time this happens I'll try to hook this machine to ethernet to
see if there's any response and try to ssh into it. I could also write
a program that writes to syslog every 5 seconds and see if those get
written when the machine is "locked up". Not sure what else I can do
at this point. I can also memtest or play kernel roulette with
mainline, but the machine was previously stable on utopic (with BIOS
  instead of UEFI boot, tho).

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1509111] Re: Hard lockup but certain UI elements keeps changing

2015-11-12 Thread Shuhao
Marking this as invalid for now. I've observed one additional event on
4.3 and now I'm back on 4.2-18 and haven't noticed this for a couple of
days.

Makes me wonder if this might be solar activity.

** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu)
   Status: Incomplete => Invalid

Hard lockup but certain UI elements keeps changing

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

2015-11-02 Thread Shuhao
I've been running 4.3.0-rc6 for a week or so without any lockups so I'm
inclined to think this is a kernel issue (interaction?).

Since 4.3 just was released, I can take a look and see if that works as
well.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1509111] [NEW] Hard lockup but certain UI elements keeps changing

2015-10-22 Thread Shuhao
Public bug reported:

I recently upgraded to Wily and I discovered that my system hard freezes
about 2-3 times a day. This is the usual: unresponsive keyboard
(including magic sysrq), unresponsive USB, no response to pings over the
network, music/audio loops, as well as no evidence of errors in syslog,
kern.log, Xorg.log.

10... 9... 8...".

written when the machine is "locked up". Not sure what else I can do at

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1310800] Re: 056a:0302 Trusty Tahr, kernel 3.13: automatic load of wacom.ko driver cause a hard kernel panic

2014-11-01 Thread Shuhao
So I have a system that this happens to. Tablet model is CTH480S.

The thing is that this setup used to work until today (kernel update 2
days ago? Although running with an old version of the kernel show the
same problem now).

The work around is add wacom into /etc/modules for now, if anyone is
interested. This adds wacom to be loaded at boot time. Not sure what the
consequence of this is, but it's a temporary solution until this problem
is tracked down.

  cause a hard kernel panic

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
I have just upgraded to 14.04 from 13.10.

I have a wacom cth-480 touch+pen tablet, which was not recognized on
13.10 (kernel 3.11). With the stock kernel from 14.04, I have an
immediate kernel panic as soon as I plug in the tablet to the laptop.

The system is a asus 1005PE (32 bit install), Xubuntu, up-to date:
  Linux asus-romano 3.13.0-24-generic #46-Ubuntu SMP Thu Apr 10 19:08:14
  UTC 2014 i686 i686 i686 GNU/Linux

The really strange thing is that if I manually load the driver with
`sudo modprobe wacom` *before* pluggin the tablet in, then the tablet
  is recognized and works ok:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1357090] Re: Black screen on resume in Xubuntu 14.04.1

2014-10-27 Thread Shuhao
It seems like the bug is back with 14.10. Entering password works, after
password is entered, the screen is locked.

My work around of binding an xrandr call to a hotkey still works for
this.

Title:
Black screen on resume in Xubuntu 14.04.1

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
It seems #1303736 is Not fixed.

Black screen on resume when using standby on close lid is confirmed on
Dell Latitude D400 on completely new install of Xubuntu 14.04.1 32
bit. downloaded 14 Aug from repository as a .ISO image.

This despite claims to the contrary on the website.
  http://xubuntu.org/news/xubuntu-14-04-1-released/ pointing to
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xubuntu-default-
  settings/+bug/1303736

Using the Suspend key results in correct operation, i.e. the laptop
suspends and resumes correctly on lid open. Suspending by closing the
laptop lid results in the black screen when re-opening. Once in black
screen mode, the only recourse is power off re-boot.

Although power manager is set correctly to Suspend in the power
manager , on closing the lid the system does NOT appear to suspend as
it does when the Log-off Suspend button is clicked or the hardware
Suspend key is pressed i.e. the problem APPEARS to be on lid close.

Power manager and light-locker set NOT to lock on suspend or shutdown
  makes no difference to behaviour.

Xubuntu up to 12.04.4 (plus latest updates) worked absolutely
correctly before new install of 14.04.1

This is a MAJOR inconvenience for an upgrade of an LTS.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1236653]

2013-11-02 Thread Shuhao
For ubuntu users, this might help you:
https://launchpad.net/~oibaf/+archive/graphics-drivers/

It is available for 13.10 and seems like it compiled the oct 31st
version of mesa, which is after when this patch landed on master.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1236653] Re: Graphics performance reduced after playing games for a little bit

2013-10-14 Thread Shuhao
So I think I have an idea of what is happening..

Here's my sensors output:

acpitz-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
temp1:+56.0°C (crit = +98.0°C)

thinkpad-isa-
Adapter: ISA adapter
fan1:1978 RPM

coretemp-isa-
Adapter: ISA adapter
Physical id 0: +57.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 0: +50.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 1: +53.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)

pkg-temp-0-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
temp1:+57.0°C

The high temperature is at 86C. I notice the performance drop at
around 87C. (Still need to try to reproduce it again...)

The CPU clock frequency is not modified at 87C. The characteristics of
the performance drop is consistent with a lowered Clock modulation,
something I've seen in programs that controls the CPU on windows.

Now this did not happen on a previous version of Linux. Previously when
I hit about 95C (which apparently is quite common for these laptops
after about 1-2 years of usage), the CPU frequency will be restricted to
800MHz, which would be the lowest frequency available.

So I'm not exactly sure what the best fix for this would be, or where
the regression happened. While 95C does not seem like a good idea, it
is actually quite easy, at least for me, to hit 87C on these thinkpads,
even after cleaning it out, replacing the thermal paste (multiple times
with no difference in results), and so forth.

I will try to get myself a fan mat and see if that helps things sometime
soon and confirm that this is indeed the issue.

How do I tag?

But I cannot test upstream kernel as it would just freeze my DE upon
boot. Not sure what's going on.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1236653] [NEW] Graphics performance reduced after playing games for a little bit

2013-10-07 Thread Shuhao
Public bug reported:

I recently upgraded to Saucy. I noticed that everytime I play something
like Counter Strike Source, my graphics performance drops down to
something like 15fps while normally it is locked at a max FPS of 40fps..

This slowdown happens and also makes my computer generally pretty slow.
Thermo maximum has not been tripped (I know, and I actually underclock
while playing these games).

I'm not sure why this is happening. It only happens on 13.10. I have
bumblebee installed. I used both cards to play the game and the same
thing happens

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1041790] Re: [snb] GPU lockup IPEHR: 0x0b160001 IPEHR: 0x0b140001, workaround i915.semaphores=0

2013-10-04 Thread Shuhao
Does anyone here notice graphics slow down? After a couple minutes of
game play with CSS, my framerate would drop to about 20fps (status of
other activities on the computer will also slowdown).

This did not happen in 13.04 but is occuring with 13.10.

Bug description:
X locks up periodically for a 2 to ten seconds at a time and this
crash log gets generated. It's significantly more than several times a
  day but not quite continuous.

Temporarily disabiling semaphores seems to eliminate the problem.
  E.g.:

  $ sudo -s
  # echo 0 /sys/modules/i915/parameters/semaphores

  [Workaround]
  1. Edit your /etc/default/grub file.
  2. Change this line:

  GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash

  to

  GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash i915.semaphores=0

  3. Then run

  sudo update-grub

  4. And reboot

If you indeed have this bug, that should stop the lockups from happening.
If it doesn't, then file a new bug report.

Side Effects: Rendering throughput is dropped by 10% with SNA, or as
much as 3x with UXA. OpenGL performance is likely to be reduced by
about 30%. More CPU time is spent waiting for the GPU with rc6
  disabled, so increased power consumption.
