[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1520343] Re: Qualcomm Atheros wireless card [168c:003e] (rev 32) not supported

2017-11-25 Thread Warren Turkal
FWIW, I did the following:

$ git clone git://kernel.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/linux-firmware.git
...
$ cd linux-firmware
$ git checkout bionic
...
$ sudo cp ath10k/QCA6147/hw3.0/* /lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6147/hw3.0/

The new firmware seems to drop my connections much more infrequently.
Perhaps upgrading the firmware in the linux-firmware package is the
right solution here.

  STATUS 2016-03-17:

  ==
WARNING: You need at least kernel 4.5.0 for the following new fix to work,
else refer to the old method described in post #22
  ==

The support for this card has now been merged to
  https://github.com/kvalo/ath10k-firmware. The repository now contains
the required board.bin, board-2.bin and firmware-4.bin files for the
card to initialize and connect to a bgn-access point (5GHz (ac-
protocol) is still untested, feel free to modify this if you can
confirm it works). Here are the new commands to get you online:

  sudo mkdir -p /lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6174/hw3.0/

  sudo rm /lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6174/hw3.0/* 2> /dev/null

  sudo wget -O /lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6174/hw3.0/board.bin
  https://github.com/kvalo/ath10k-
  firmware/blob/master/QCA6174/hw3.0/board.bin?raw=true

  sudo wget -O /lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6174/hw3.0/board-2.bin
  https://github.com/kvalo/ath10k-
  firmware/blob/master/QCA6174/hw3.0/board-2.bin?raw=true

  sudo wget -O /lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6174/hw3.0/firmware-4.bin
  https://github.com/kvalo/ath10k-

firmware/blob/master/QCA6174/hw3.0/firmware-4.bin_WLAN.RM.2.0-00180-QCARMSWPZ-1?raw=true

Reboot or reload the ath10k_pci module and you should be able to
  connect!

  STATUS 2015-12-22:

Currently there is a fix for this problem in post #22 (originally post
#19, but reposted due to command typos!) which seems to have fixed the
issue for many. This bug is unique to revision 32 of the card
[168c:003e], fixes for older revisions don't seem to work.

There are a couple of issues regarding the fix for some people (not
  all):

  1. Wireless works, but network throughput stops some time after
  connecting to access point

  2. Bluetooth communications take a noticeable performance hit when
  transferring something over WiFi

  Original description:

I have recently installed Ubuntu 15.10 (64-bit) alongside Windows 10 on an
Acer Aspire VN7-792G-76ZH and discovered, that the Qualcomm wireless card
doesn't work in it or 16.04.
The card has the device id 168c:003e as many other cards, for example the
Qualcomm Atheros Killer
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1383184), but it has a
newer revision number (32) and the suggested fixes work only partially and the
wireless is unusable.

The computer has just been released this summer and is Intel Skylake
  -based.

I've tried the patch from bug 1383184, which has a fix for the card revision
20:
Make the directory /lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6174/hw3.0/ and put in the patch
files:
  board.bin
  firmware-4.bin
  notice_ath10k_firmware-4.txt

ath10k_pci succeeds in loading the firmware, but it seems that the
  firmware is not working correctly:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1475729] Re: Lots of EDID related back traces.

2015-08-04 Thread Warren Turkal
Is it possible to run that kernel with the wl wireless driver? Dell
stupidly ships this laptop with a wireless nic that requires a
proprietary driver.

Thanks for that info Seth. I guess I am suffering from multiple issues.
Is there any work on the BCM4352 in the linux kernel right now? This
proprietary driver is a black box.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1395553] Re: iwlwifi contiually crashes

2014-12-25 Thread Warren Turkal
Okay, so I did some further research. I found that my linux-firmware
package was not upgrading. It was stuck at some ancient version. That is
why I didn't have the updated firmware. The weird thing was that apt-
get dist-upgrade was not showing is as a package that needed upgrading.
However, apt-cache show linux-firmware was showing both the installed
version and the version in the archive.I had a similar problem with the
kernel package after upgrading to 14.10. I found a stray pin config of
the following in my /etc/apt/preferences.d/ dir. I think that I was
asked to installed a proposed kernel at one point and I added the ping
config at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed. However, this
config seems to not prefer updates from the non-proposed package repos.
As soon as I removed the pin, my kernel was upgraded. I don't know about
the linux-firmware since I'd already purged and reinstalled it.

As a result, I think this bug can be closed.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1395553] Re: iwlwifi contiually crashes

2014-12-05 Thread Warren Turkal
Oh yeah, this works a million times better with firmware v9 on the
utopic kernel. The V8 firmware appears to be broken with my setup. Is
there any chance that the v9 firmware for the 7620 at
http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/iwlwifi/ can be added to
linux-firmware?

Also, why isn't apport opening a browser to me report a bug when I click
the dialog box to do so? Should I file a bug with apport for that?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1395553] Re: iwlwifi contiually crashes

2014-12-05 Thread Warren Turkal
It seems to work much better with firmware version 9 on the mainline
3.17.4. I don't see any of the firmware SW error messages. I will reboot
now and try the normal utopic kernel.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1395553] Re: iwlwifi contiually crashes

2014-11-25 Thread Warren Turkal
There is a performance impact in that my WIFI sometimes drops out with
no seeming cause. I usually have to stop networking and restart it in
the network manager menu. I don't know if this is related to the
microcode software.

I know that I was having some issues in 14.04. However, I don't know if
they are the same problems. They certainly did not seem as bad. FTR, I
did upgrade this machine to 14.10 shortly before the release and the
upgrade failed. I actually had to uninstall linux-image-generic and
reinstall it to get it to pull the latest version. I guess it's possible
that other packages are also messed up. However, I don't know how to
easily check.

I will have to try the mainline build.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1371310] Re: docker.io doesn't work with apparmor 3.0 RC1 kernel

2014-10-13 Thread Warren Turkal
I am getting the following still.
# docker run -i -t ubuntu /bin/bash
set apparmor profile docker-default: no such file or directory2014/10/13
11:05:41 Error response from daemon: Cannot start container
7981801146ab1771470fd72bc97e6582ff573fa159199f6cb86afaa7eaa74ea9: set apparmor
profile docker-default: no such file or directory

Here's uname -a:
# uname -a
Linux braindead 3.16.0-22-generic #29-Ubuntu SMP Thu Oct 9 16:26:18 UTC 2014
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

As seen above, I am running 3.16.0-22.29. Is there something I need to
do manually to fix this?

Bug description:
  Steps to reproduce (from
  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Process/Merges/TestPlans/AppArmor):

  1. sudo apt-get install docker.io # 1.2.0~dfsg1-1

  2. sudo docker pull ubuntu:trusty

What is expected? uptime to return something like:
$ sudo docker run ubuntu:trusty uptime
   20:31:21 up 1 min, 0 users, load average: 0.09, 0.06, 0.03

I set 'sudo sysctl -w kernel.printk_ratelimit=0' but there is nothing
apparmor related in the logs. If I boot an earlier kernel without the
  3.0 RC1 patches, it works.

FYI, 3.16.0-17.23 is in utopic-proposed now and on its way to utopic,
which will affect docker.io in Ubuntu. Workaround until this bug is
fixed is to boot into 3.16.0-16.22 or earlier.

I also tried the 3.17.0-031700-generic #2001410060605 linked above. It
also does not work on that kernel.

  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Process/Merges/TestPlans/AppArmor):

  1. sudo apt-get install docker.io # 1.2.0~dfsg1-1

  2. sudo docker pull ubuntu:trusty

  3. sudo docker run ubuntu:trusty uptime

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1371310] Re: docker.io doesn't work with apparmor 3.0 RC1 kernel

2014-10-13 Thread Warren Turkal
I just found that the apparmor profile for docker was disabled for some
reason. After removing the symlink from /etc/apparmor.d/disable/docker,
it works. I don't remember ever adding docker to the apparmor disable
links.

So, it seems like the kernel problem is solved. Now, where do I file a
bug about crappy behavior of the touchscreen in Xorg (and Unity as a
result)? I don't want to clutter this bug with that info.

The Inspiron 14 (3421) with just a non-i2c synaptics touchpad was tested

continues to function and suspend/resume don't seem to be affected.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1265885] Re: regression: SynPS/2 touchpad detected as DLL060A:00 pointer

2014-05-13 Thread Warren Turkal
So I loaded the module, there are no messages generated in dmesg as a
result.

Also, I ran this in another window while loading the module just to make sure:
# udevadm monitor
monitor will print the received events for:
UDEV - the event which udev sends out after rule processing
KERNEL - the kernel uevent

KERNEL[1230.288508] add /module/hid_multitouch (module)
KERNEL[1230.288646] add /bus/hid/drivers/hid-multitouch (drivers)
UDEV [1230.289076] add /module/hid_multitouch (module)
UDEV [1230.289442] add /bus/hid/drivers/hid-multitouch (drivers)

Looks like the only udev events are related to the module and driver
load. There's nothing about the input device itself.

Also, no new devices show in xinput list.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1265885] Re: regression: SynPS/2 touchpad detected as DLL060A:00 pointer

2014-05-12 Thread Warren Turkal
Here's the logs just after reboot. I also added a uname -a to make
sure that it's clear which kernel version is being used.

FWIW, when I rebooted the laptop, it locked up on the dell bios screen.
I had to cold boot to get it to boot into ubuntu. This probably was more
prevalent before the latest bios update that dell released. I wouldn't
be too shocked if there were some kind of ACPI firmware issue. However,
I am not sure if this is related to the touchpad issue at all.

Great news! With the new kernel, everything seems to work like when I
don't blacklist the driver. The devices are named differently though.

Bug description:
This regression occurs somewhere between 3.11.0-14-generic (latest on

kernel, I actually get settings for setting up my touchpad in the

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1263219] Re: kernel panics with BUG

2014-02-14 Thread Warren Turkal
The latest proposed kernel fails even worse than my original report. The
conditions when it fails (that is when the iwlwifi module is loaded) is
the same. However, now blacklisting iwlwifi and then manually modprobing
it after logging in locks up the system such that I cannot capture the
dmesg. Before, I was able to capture dmesg after attempting to load the
module.

FWIW, I also compiled a 3.14-rc2 kernel. It doesn't have this problem.

FTR, there is a crash with 3.11.0-15.16. It looked different though. It
happened after I saw the message about searching for Btrfs filesystemss.
I don't have any more info at this time. I want to try the 3.11.0-15.22
kernel and maybe the latest trusty kernels. Where do I find them?

Here is the dmesg output.

This info is a little tricky to collect since I can't bring up my

Title:
  kernel panics with BUG

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I have a Dell Sputnik 3 that I just got and upgraded it to
12.10-13.04-13.10. On boot the kernel crashes with a BUG. I can
prevent the crash by blacklisting the iwlwifi module and I can cause
the BUG by manually loading the module. I will attach a dmesg output
from after the loading of the module in a few minutes.
