I have since managed to work out that my laptop had developed a hardware
fault, so I am 99% sure that those kernel lockups are due to that fault.
The laptop has now been decomissioned, so there is not much point
chasing this down further. This bug report can be closed, thanks.

No console messages that I can see (I am running X and the lockup
prevented me from switching to the console). Nothing in kern.log,
either.
