[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1331860] Re: [Gigabyte GA-MA770-UD3] wireless lags

2014-07-30 Thread dev-rke
Hi,

i just tested with current stable 3.13.0-32-generic again.
Everything works fine, no lags occur.
So i think you can close this ticket.

Thank you all for your support.

Title:
  [Gigabyte GA-MA770-UD3] wireless lags

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Hi,

i already discussed the following issue already in the german forum

http://forum.ubuntuusers.de/topic/netzwerk-lags-nach-kernel-update-3-13-14-04-lt/
and in your Official Ubuntu IRC Support Channel, without a solution.

  System:
  new Ubuntu: 14.04 LTS
  new Kernel: 3.13.0-29-generic
  old Ubuntu: 13.10
  old Kernel: 3.11.0-19-generic

wireless device: TP-LINK WND4800, Atheros chipset
  wireless driver: ath9k
  wireless operating mode: 2.4ghz @ 802.11bgn and 5ghz @ 802.11a+n
  wireless router: fritz!box 3390

Before upgrading to Ubuntu 14.04 LTS everything worked fine.
After upgrading to Ubuntu 14.04 LTS the wireless connection produced
sequently lags, when sending a ping to my wireless router.
The lag sequence duration is around 5 seconds, the duration to the next lag
sequence is around 100 seconds.
Each ping get a reply (no requests get lost), but the delay of the reply
raises up to 2000 miliseconds.
Normally the ping is around 1 or 2 miliseconds.
I can reproduce this behavior manually by running 'sudo iwlist wlan1 scan'
and keep watching the ping in another terminal window.
I also used 'iwevent' to watch on events fired by the wireless interface
while the lag is happening:
'01:31:13.289166 wlan1Scan request completed' is the only message i get.

When booting the 3.11 kernel everything works fine again, no lags occur.
If i try to reproduce the behavior with a manual scan as described before, no
lags occur, everything keeps working fine.

I already tried several configurations using special driver options like
nohwcrypt and debug, but dmesg and syslog do not log any failures or
warnings.
If i downgrade the wireless router to 2.4ghz @ 802.11b+g (54mbit) the new
kernel (3.13) has also no failed pings and no massive lags, but this is not a
stable solution for me due to many other wireless networks in my environment.

So i assume there has been something changed between the kernel 3.11 and 3.13
or the belonging ath9k driver.
I thought about the wireless scanning interval of the network manager, but i
think changing this would also be just a workaround than a clean solution.

Any ideas or recommendations how to solve this or how to collect more
relevant information about this issue?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1331860] Re: [Gigabyte GA-MA770-UD3] wireless lags

2014-06-26 Thread dev-rke
Hi Christopher,

i installed several kernel versions as described in your links, e.g.
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/3.13.0-20.42/+build/5857865/+files/linux-image-3.13.0-20-generic_3.13.0-20.42_i386.deb
but after installation of all of these packages i cannot connect to my wireless
device.
Did i miss out something? Do i have to install another or an additional package?
I am not familiar with kernel installation, configuration nor development so i
might need some further advice.
I also read the given wiki articles again and googled a bit without any helpful
results.
Maybe it is very simple to get it running, i am a bit tired now and will try to
get it running again tomorrow.

Thank you for your support.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1331860] Re: [Gigabyte GA-MA770-UD3] wireless lags

2014-06-20 Thread dev-rke
Hi Christopher,

first i recommend to remove the Gigabyte mainboard from the title, because it
does not cause the issue.
My network interface card is a TP-LINK WND4800, which is connected via a PCI
Express slot, so it is an external device.

Second i do not fully understand your recommended approach.
I installed the mainline 3.16 rc before and had no problems with my network.
But i had problems with my graphics card or graphics driver.
It seems that the failure is produced by the current customized Ubuntu kernel
3.13,
because using the older 3.11 kernel everything worked fine and with the newer
mainline upstream kernel 3.16 everything works fine again.
I would like to understand why i should install mainline kernels that are not
compiled with additional drivers etc. which makes problems with my graphics.
It would make more sense to me to install precompiled kernel builds that are
already customized for Ubuntu,
containing all drivers etc. and to find the last working Ubuntu kernel. If i
find the first failing kernel then i can do a reverse bisect.
Do you have a list of older kernels or older release candidates for me that i
could install?
Do you agree with my approach?
Or did i misunderstand something?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1331860] Re: [Gigabyte GA-MA770-UD3] wireless lags

2014-06-20 Thread dev-rke
However, i just tested 3.12.0, 3.12.15 and 3.13.0 to proove my idea.
All of them worked fine, no error occured while manually scanning, because they
are mainline kernels.
Just for the record: in the working Kernel 3.11 (the last stable official
Ubuntu kernel) and all other working mainline kernels i have a minimal
increased ping delay (up to 50ms) while scanning, but this does not affect any
low latency applications.

Where can i find a list of older kernels or older release candidates
that i could install instead of the mainline kernels?

Any ideas or recommendations how to solve this or how to collect more
relevant information about this issue?

Title:
  wireless lags

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Title:
  wireless lags

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Any ideas or recommendations how to solve this or how to collect more
relevant information about this issue?

lags occur, everything keeps working fine.

Title:
  wireless lags

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1331860] Re: wireless lags

2014-06-19 Thread dev-rke
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

  Hi,

i already discussed the following issue already in the german forum

http://forum.ubuntuusers.de/topic/netzwerk-lags-nach-kernel-update-3-13-14-04-lt/
and in your Official Ubuntu IRC Support Channel, without a solution.

  System:
  new Ubuntu: 14.04 LTS
  new Kernel: 3.13.0-29-generic
  old Ubuntu: 13.10
  old Kernel: 3.11.0-19-generic

wireless device: TP-LINK WND4800, Atheros chipset
  wireless driver: ath9k
  wireless operating mode: 2.4ghz @ 802.11bgn and 5ghz @ 802.11a+n
  wireless router: fritz!box 3390

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1331860] Re: wireless lags

2014-06-19 Thread dev-rke
Hi Joseph,

i installed the recommended mainline kernel:
linux-image-3.16.0-031600rc1-generic_3.16.0-031600rc1.201406160035_i386.deb

After a restart, lightdm failed to start, i assume due to my proprietary nvidia
graphics driver.
But i used the chance to try pinging from console (CTRL+ALT+F1) while executing
a network scan in parallel (CTRL+ALT+F2),
wireless in 5ghz mode works fine with the mainline kernel, no lags can be
reproduced.

Thank you for your great support!
I switched to Ubuntu two years ago and i am still very satisfied.

wireless device: TP-LINK WND4800, Atheros chipset
  wireless driver: ath9k
  wireless operating mode: 2.4ghz @ 802.11bgn and 5ghz @ 802.11a+n
  wireless router: fritz!box 3390
