This worked correctly at my friends house just fine. However, I flew home and now my computer cannot ping or connect to the internet at all. (Both of these were wireless networks). I switched to my windows partition of my computer, and it connected to the internet no issues. So the problem was isolated to ubuntu. My computer is a Dell Studio XPS which is about 3 years old now. The WiFi adapter is an Intel WiFi Link 5300. This will play into the game later. After a couple of hours searching around and talking to people, a few things were unearthed. First, that a dhcp lease was obtained from the router. Other than that, the computer could not communicate with anything on the network (no ping even). All of the /etc/hosts, /etc/hostname, and /etc/network/interfaces stuff was in order. There was nothing abnormal in any of the logs that were checked. With the help of some googling, someone pointed out that it sounded remarkably like what was happening in this thread. DHCP lease acquired, no transmission after that. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/420678 This was for the Intel Wifi Link 5300. That is my adapter. It must be conflicting between the G and N standards from the Linksys WRT310N router here at home, and it must not have had that conflict at the previous house I was at. I booted into a previous version of the kernel (3.0.0.17) and there was no issue (that's actually how I'm typing this right now). I performed a "sudo apt-get --reinstall install linux-image-3.2.0-24-generic" to make sure the kernel was correct, and the error repeated after a restart. Once again, I booted into the previous version of the kernel, and it worked correctly. If there is any differing conclusion about what happened, feel free to let me know!
