I've made the same tests with mainline kernel '5.12.4-051204-generic #202105140931 SMP Fri May 14 09:35:44 UTC 2021 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux' and the results are the same, i.e. sensors command stopping when reaching amd section and this error message showing in dmesg: [ 65.636330] [drm] PCIE GART of 256M enabled (table at 0x00F4). [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1910562] Re: Fans switching on and off every 10 seconds after update to kernel 5.8.0-34
Hi Sergio. First of all, thank you (and anyone else involved) for your time investigating in the issue. > Could you please try to run the command several times, specifying the different chip I did not find how to specify a certain chip with the 'sensors' command after reading the man page. But I'm sure the problem happens when sensors tries to read the temperature from the AMD discrete graphics card, because when the console output of sensors reaches this section during the scan: amdgpu-pci-0100 Adapter: PCI adapter [ --> HERE IT HANGS FOR 2 SECS <-- ] vddgfx:1.05 V edge: +42.0°C (crit = +94.0°C, hyst = -273.1°C) power1:7.11 W (cap = 35.00 W) it hangs for a couple of seconds and two things happens: 1. the fans start spinning 2. I see an drm related warning appearing in the dmesg logs: [ 41.397707] [drm] PCIE GART of 256M enabled (table at 0x00F4). [ 42.609649] [drm:dce110_edp_wait_for_hpd_ready [amdgpu]] *ERROR* dce110_edp_wait_for_hpd_ready: wait timed out! [ 43.358578] amdgpu :01:00.0: [drm] Cannot find any crtc or sizes Could it be that scanning the amdgpu-pci-0100 causes the AMD card to reset and this is related to the fans starting ? > you were able to reproduce this problem not only in Ubuntu, but also in other distributions. Is that correct ? I was able to reproduce on Ubuntu 20.04 with all 5.8 kernels available and with a 5.10.0-14 kernel installed from Hirsute beta repositories. However today I made some tests again using my stable 20.04 and also the just released final Hirsute 21.04 from a live USB. Below the results of running the 'sensors' command in terminal, ordered by Ubuntu version and kernel: 1. 20.04, 5.4.0-59-generic #65-Ubuntu SMP - everything ok - no fans spinning - no dmesg warinings - no sensors hanging during scan: amdgpu-pci-0100 Adapter: PCI adapter vddgfx: N/A edge: N/A (crit = +94.0°C, hyst = -273.1°C) power1: N/A (cap = 35.00 W) 2. 20.04, 5.8.0-50-generic #56~20.04.1-Ubuntu SMP - problem present - fans spinning - sensors hangs during output when reaching amd section: amdgpu-pci-0100 Adapter: PCI adapter [ 2 SECS ] vddgfx:1.05 V edge: +38.0°C (crit = +94.0°C, hyst = -273.1°C) power1:7.12 W (cap = 35.00 W) - dmesg warnings appearing when fans start: [ 41.397707] [drm] PCIE GART of 256M enabled (table at 0x00F4). [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1829255] Re: Sever performance degradation after updating to 5.0.0-15 due to mds mitigation
Just I quick follow up. The impact was so severe in my code because I was using SDL_PollEvent() really often to read the keys status... which was basically blocking my code. That was one of the first things I wrote and forgot about it. So that was really a context switching overhead problem. Thanks again. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1829255 Title: Sever performance degradation after updating to 5.0.0-15 due to mds mitigation Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Won't Fix Bug description: After updating to the latest kernel 5.0.0-15 I'm experiencing a severe performance degradation on my machine with one of my applications (a gbc emulator developed by me). I saw about a 27% performance loss, going from 55fps to 40. Booting an old 5.0.0-13 kernel or disabling mds mitigation at boot with 'mds=off' solves the problem. I know there isn't much to do about (apart from disabling the mitigation) but I'm reporting this because I spent half a day bisecting with git cause I thought the problem was with my latest commits. Security updates are obviously important and a priority, but I think that at least with this kind of mitigations that cause big performance degradation, an message or a simple alert to the user during the update should be shown. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1829255] Re: Sever performance degradation after updating to 5.0.0-15 due to mds mitigation
Tyler, thanks a lot for taking the time to examine the issue and writing such a complete response. I agree with all your points. I'll take this as an opportunity to try to learn more about profiling and user/kernel space switching and optimization, because this made me curious: > Since the recommendation includes flushing the buffers before exiting from the kernel to userspace, > workloads which are syscall heavy are likely to see the largest performance hit. My emulator is basically a simple asm parser with SDL2 as graphic backend and I'm not doing (that I'm aware of..) any ioctl or syscall. So I need to understand what is happening and what I'm doing work. Back to study now :-) and thanks again -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1829255 Title: Sever performance degradation after updating to 5.0.0-15 due to mds mitigation Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Won't Fix Bug description: After updating to the latest kernel 5.0.0-15 I'm experiencing a severe performance degradation on my machine with one of my applications (a gbc emulator developed by me). [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1829255] [NEW] Sever performance degradation after updating to 5.0.0-15 due to mds mitigation
Public bug reported: After updating to the latest kernel 5.0.0-15 I'm experiencing a severe performance degradation on my machine with one of my applications (a gbc emulator developed by me). If the problem is solved, change the tag 'verification-needed-trusty' to 'verification-done-trusty'. If verification is not done by 5 working days from today, this fix will be dropped from the source code, and this bug will be closed. I really do not understand those sentences... what tag should be used if I've verified that the kernel in proposed does *not* solve the problem ? Because not setting 'verification-done-vivid' will result in the bug to be dropped... which obviosly I don't want do happen. If instead someone sets 'verification-needed-vivid' (as already happened) this will imply that the bug is solved, but it is not (at least for me). Instruction unclear. It may be prudent for future upstream to break up large trims into multiple requests on smaller regions. ===Original Bug description == Samsung SSD 840 Series failed to get NCQ Send/Recv Log Emask 0x1.
