Screen blank or shaking if boot without nomodeset

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
Booting with kernel 3.2.0-29 works normally. After upgrading to
3.2.0-52 the screen started shaking erratically and it was very hard
to make out anything on it. Adding the nomodeset parameter to boot
work as a workaround but also seems to make X.org use the vesa driver
instead of intel - slower desktop.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1215441] Re: Screen blank or shaking if boot without nomodeset

2013-08-22 Thread Joseph Salisbury
Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream stable kernel?
Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the
latest v3.2 stable kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag:
'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot,
please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as
Confirmed.

Thanks in advance.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1215441] Re: Screen blank or shaking if boot without nomodeset

2013-08-22 Thread Carl Englund
The folder 3.2.50-precise did not contain a i386 image, only amd64.
Still, it's older that the kernel I'm having trouble with.

Through synaptic, I downloaded some other kernels to test. Here is the
result, NOT using the nomodeset parameter:

3.2.0-51: shaking/distorted
3.2.0-49: shaking/distorted
3.2.0-48: shaking/distorted
3.2.0-45: shaking/distorted
3.2.0-44: works normally!
3.5.0-39: black screen with cursor but nothing else
3.8.0-29: black at first but when moving cursor a damaged desktop appears
partly, with letters and areas missing

I would assume the problem occurs in some changes applied in 3.2.0-45?

Sadly, I'm handing back this computer to its rightful owner tomorrow, so
I won't be able to continue testing. Hopefully someone else has the same
problem and can make use of these notes.

Title:
Screen blank or shaking if boot without nomodeset

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Booting with kernel 3.2.0-29 works normally. After upgrading to
3.2.0-52 the screen started shaking erratically and it was very hard
to make out anything on it. Adding the nomodeset parameter to boot
work as a workaround but also seems to make X.org use the vesa driver
instead of intel - slower desktop.
