Description of problem:

At present, the ALPS DualPoint TouchPad is not supported under Linux, being
recognised as a PS/2 mouse only.

Tommy Will / Yunkang Tang from ALPS has written a kernel patch adding support
for it (attached), which he'll submit to the upstream linux-input mailing
  list soon.

The patch has been tested successfully by Gaspard Jankowiak, a Fedora
Community member with this hardware. He used a Fedora 19 kernel built by
Niels de Vos, with the patch added for this purpose.

This BZ is mostly for tracking, so that if/when the patch is accepted
upstream, it can be pulled into the relevant Fedora 19 kernel.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

  Linux kernel 3.11.x

The feedback from Gaspard (copied from email):

The touchpad is now recognized, edge scrolling is working, and
  two-finger scrolling is not.

  dmesg snip:
[2.786816] input: AlpsPS/2 ALPS DualPoint TouchPad as
  /devices/platform/i8042/serio1/input/input5

  Tested with
  Name: kernel
  Version : 3.11.6
  Release : 200.0.bz953211.2.fc19
  Architecture: x86_64

Note - 2 finger scrolling is not supported by the hardware, so this is
as expected. :)

Justin, I'm confused. How is this bug any different from the tracking
bug we have for this already, which is bug 953211 ?

Did I miss some subtlety here?

Yeah, they're for different hardware (although still from ALPS).

The patch for BZ 953211 doesn't help with the touchpad on the Dell XT2,
thus the patch in this BZ (and it's just a 1-liner).

Is that clearer now? :)

Ah, I see. I should have just read the patch. We're just adding a
device ID to the existing support here, right?

Yes, thank you.

2013-12-19 Thread Marty Plummer
Will do asap, but I will say that my current kernel on archlinux
contains the patch, so I assume upstream has it in the mainline kernel.
As my internet connection is less than adequate as of now I'll have to
wait to be able to download the latest iso, but I will test as soon as I
can.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1215589] Re: [Dell Latitude XT2] Touchpad detected as ps/2 mouse in Ubuntu 13.04

2013-12-18 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Marty Plummer, could you please test the development release via
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ and advise if this is
reproducible? It contains the upstream fix previously discussed:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/git?p=ubuntu%2Fubuntu-trusty.gita=searchh=HEADst=authors=Yunkang+Tang

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1215589] Re: Dell Latitude XT2 touchpad detected as ps/2 mouse in Ubuntu 13.04

2013-10-18 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Marty Plummer, don't worry about submitting apport-collect on mainline
kernels, as apport is not designed to this. One may just make a comment
to the test results.

Despite this, the issue you are reporting is an upstream one. Could you
please report this problem through the appropriate channel by following
the instructions _verbatim_ at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/kernel#KernelTeam.2BAC8-KernelTeamBugPolicies.Overview_on_Reporting_Bugs_Upstream
?

Thank you for your understanding.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1215589] Re: Dell Latitude XT2 touchpad detected as ps/2 mouse in Ubuntu 13.04

2013-10-10 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Marty Plummer, you may test the latest mainline kernel, which is now
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.12-rc4-saucy/ , in your
current install. You would not need to test the latest mainline kernel
in Saucy at this time.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1215589] Re: Dell Latitude XT2 touchpad detected as ps/2 mouse in Ubuntu 13.04

2013-10-10 Thread Marty Plummer
Still an issue. I've switched to arch linux and was testing via live
iso, so I can't do that in my current install. Would a vm work the same,
or not? I *could* install ubuntu on a partition temporarily but I'd like
to avoid that if possible, as I no longer use ubuntu. I just want to
follow through with this bug report to the end for the sake of all linux
users, regardless of distro. I can install 3.12 kernel on arch via the
aur, would that be valid?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1215589] Re: Dell Latitude XT2 touchpad detected as ps/2 mouse in Ubuntu 13.04

2013-10-10 Thread Marty Plummer
Nevermind, just realized I'm an idiot. I have two perfectly good usb
sticks I can install ubuntu to and the mainline kernel debs, so I can
still test this properly. Having some domestic issues, but I will get it
tested within a day or two.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1215589] Re: Dell Latitude XT2 touchpad detected as ps/2 mouse in Ubuntu 13.04

2013-10-09 Thread Marty Plummer
Crap, I don't have (nor do I intend to) saucy installed; I've tested
against saucy for you by booting the iso from hdd using grub2, but I
can't do that with the 3.12 kernel because I'd need to reboot, and since
that's a live environment it won't keep the changes.

Could an iso with 3.12 be built? And if so, could you get me some
instructions, mayhaps?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1215589] Re: Dell Latitude XT2 touchpad detected as ps/2 mouse in Ubuntu 13.04

2013-09-29 Thread Marty Plummer
Sorry about that, I lost connection shortly after running apport against
this bug. No, it still functions only as a simple ps/2 mouse, and I
cannot set any standard touchpad options.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1215589] Re: Dell Latitude XT2 touchpad detected as ps/2 mouse in Ubuntu 13.04

2013-09-09 Thread Marty Plummer
Not personally; I installed raring immediately after getting this
laptop. However, this bug has been reported for previous versions here;
in fact I started this bug report because I posted that this bug affects
me on an older versions's bug report; I can't seem to find it now,
though.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1215589] Re: Dell Latitude XT2 touchpad detected as ps/2 mouse in Ubuntu 13.04

2013-08-23 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Marty Plummer, could you please confirm this issue exists with the
latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ . If the issue remains,
could you please run the following command in the development release
from a Terminal (Applications-Accessories-Terminal), as it will
automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this
report:

apport-collect -p linux replace-with-bug-number

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1215589] Re: Dell Latitude XT2 touchpad detected as ps/2 mouse in Ubuntu 13.04

2013-08-22 Thread Joseph Salisbury
Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer
to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest
v3.11 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag:
'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot,
please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as
Confirmed.

Thanks in advance.
