Title:
Dell E6420 suspends on 13.04 but will not resume properly

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
What I expected to happen is after pressing the Sleep button on the
keyboard to suspend, waiting two minutes and then pressing the power
button to resume, I expected the laptop to return to the state I was
  in before I suspended.

What happened instead is when I attempt to resume my E6420 after
suspending it, I can see the mouse pointer, but it appears that the
resume never completes. The screen stays blank although it appears to
be attempting to refresh the screen occasionally. The only way to
continue work appears to be to force it to shut down by holding down
the power button and then booting from scratch.

Rebooting using the reboot command works flawlessly.

I went through the DebuggingKernelSuspend procedure and output from
/proc/acpi/wakeup:

2013-09-12 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Jack C. Holt, the next step is to bisect between Precise and Raring, in
order to identify the offending commit. Could you please do this
following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection ?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1224005] Re: Dell E6420 suspends on 13.04 but will not resume properly

2013-09-12 Thread Jack C. Holt
This problem did not occur prior to 13.04. I have been using Ubuntu
reliably and with the ability to suspend on my Dell E6420 since at least
Ubuntu version 12.04.

2013-09-11 Thread Jack C. Holt
Tested on the latest v3.11 kernel. Output of uname -a is "Linux
DoctorWho 3.11.0-031100-generic #201309021735 SMP Mon Sep 2 21:36:21 UTC
2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux". The bug still exists.

Title:
Dell E6420 suspends on 13.04 but will not resume properly

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  What I expected to happen:
After pressing the Sleep button on the keyboard to suspend, waiting two
minutes and then pressing the power button to resume, I expected the laptop to
return to the state I was in before I suspended.

  What happened instead:
When I attempt to resume my E6420 after suspending it, I can see the mouse
pointer, but it appears that the resume never completes. The screen stays
blank although it appears to be attempting to refresh the screen occasionally.
The only way to continue work appears to be to force it to shut down by holding
down the power button and then booting from scratch.

Rebooting using the reboot command works flawlessly.

I am running the latest bios (A19) and just updated all software using
  the Software Updater.

The output from lsb_release -rd is:

  Description: Ubuntu 13.04
  Release: 13.04

I went through the DebuggingKernelSuspend procedure:

  Output from /proc/acpi/wakeup:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1224005] Re: Dell E6420 suspends on 13.04 but will not resume properly

2013-09-11 Thread Joseph Salisbury
Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer
to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest
v3.11 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag:
'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot,
please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as
"Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.
