Public bug reported: I downloaded the latest build of ubuntu 14.04, trusty-desktop-amd64. (2014-03-15) Ubiquity 2.17.9 Apt 0.9.15.4ubuntu2
Booted it from a USB flash drive and installed the Broadcom STA, going to "Software & Updates" -> "Additional Drivers". It worked great! Then I installed Ubuntu in the hard drive, and the installed version did not have the STA drivers. I can easily see the proprietary driver is not installed: # dmesg | grep b43 [ 10.188127] b43-phy0: Broadcom 4312 WLAN found (core revision 15) [ 10.240601] b43-phy0: Found PHY: Analog 6, Type 5 (LP), Revision 1 [ 10.267103] b43 ssb0:0: Direct firmware load failed with error -2 [ 10.267105] b43 ssb0:0: Falling back to user helper [ 10.778135] b43 ssb0:0: Direct firmware load failed with error -2 [ 10.778141] b43 ssb0:0: Falling back to user helper [ 10.842392] b43 ssb0:0: Direct firmware load failed with error -2 [ 10.842397] b43 ssb0:0: Falling back to user helper [ 10.844949] b43 ssb0:0: Direct firmware load failed with error -2 [ 10.844955] b43 ssb0:0: Falling back to user helper [ 10.846782] b43-phy0 ERROR: Firmware file "b43/ucode15.fw" not found [ 10.846840] b43-phy0 ERROR: Firmware file "b43-open/ucode15.fw" not found [ 10.846876] b43-phy0 ERROR: You must go to http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/b43#devicefirmware and download the correct firmware for this driver version. Please carefully read all instructions on this website. And there should be a wl.ko file in the dkms folder. /lib/modules/3.13.0-17-generic/updates/dkms/wl.ko but there isn't even dkms. ok, then I thought, let's just install the driver again, but I can't, I need a Ubuntu DVD. APT cannot see a USB flash drive as a CD/DVD, it can't easily be added as a repository. (maybe I should open an issue to APT too?) So I tried the whole procedure 1 more time, and the same thing happened, I'm able to reproduce the error. I have the skills to install the driver without internet, I only need the dkms and bcmwl-kernel-source deb files, but a lot of users can struggle with it. Maybe this is not a bug, just a feature request, but it would be really helpful. Let me know if you need more information.
