Joseph Salisbury, I installed the test kernel and booted several times. Still hangs after the Initial RamDisk loaded message is shown and the fan speeds up. The screen however does stay alive and doesn't switch off or turn black (messages stay visible). Hope this helps. Re: [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1455852] Re: 15.04 will not boot on MacBook 2, 1
another possible candidate re boot hang: commit 0e126cfab3928e8b01e17e1e707eec2bfdb4f1c2 Author: Len Brown len.br...@intel.com Date: Wed Jan 15 00:37:34 2014 -0500 sched/idle/x86: Restore mwait_idle() to fix boot hangs, to improve power savings and to improve performance commit b253149b843f89cd300cbdbea27ce1f847506f99 upstream. In Linux-3.9 we removed the mwait_idle() loop: 69fb3676df33 (x86 idle: remove mwait_idle() and idle=mwait cmdline param) The reasoning was that modern machines should be sufficiently happy during the boot process using the default_idle() HALT loop, until cpuidle loads and either acpi_idle or intel_idle invoke the newer MWAIT-with-hints idle loop. But two machines reported problems: 1. Certain Core2-era machines support MWAIT-C1 and HALT only. MWAIT-C1 is preferred for optimal power and performance. But if they support just C1, cpuidle never loads and so they use the boot-time default idle loop forever. 2. Some laptops will boot-hang if HALT is used, but will boot successfully if MWAIT is used. This appears to be a hidden assumption in BIOS SMI, that is presumably valid on the proprietary OS where the BIOS was validated. https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=60770 So here we effectively revert the patch above, restoring the mwait_idle() loop. However, we don't bother restoring the idle=mwait cmdline parameter, since it appears to add no value. Maintainer notes: For 3.9, simply revert 69fb3676df for 3.10, patch -F3 applies, fuzz needed due to __cpuinit use in context For 3.11, 3.12, 3.13, this patch applies cleanly Tested-by: Mike Galbraith bitbuc...@online.de Signed-off-by: Len Brown len.br...@intel.com Acked-by: Mike Galbraith bitbuc...@online.de Cc: Borislav Petkov b...@alien8.de Cc: H. Wrong guess re 37ef01ab... , but there is a difference. After reaching the usual ..Created slice... message, instead of stalling on the message , the screen goes black then stalls. Still boots on recovery mode only. Must be another or combination of commits. There are 4 or 5 i915 related ones possibly relevant. Hoping the relevant commit is in the updated Ubuntu kernel. It is certainly in the mainline which works here without issue. Re: [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1455852] Re: 15.04 will not boot on MacBook 2, 1
Remember similar stalling while booting in MacBook 2,1 issues predate the ubuntu 3.19 kernel. They are in 3.16 and previous I think also, just not as consistently or persistently as the in the 3.19. Would be nice for Ubuntu to figure this out and backport all supported kernels. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1455852] Re: 15.04 will not boot on MacBook 2, 1
Commit 37ef01ab is in mainline as of v4.1-rc1. It was also cc'd to stable and is in the upstream stable kernel as of 3.19.7. It will make it's way into Vivid when it gets the 3.19.7 updates, which will probably occur in Ubuntu version: 3.19.0-18. I'll build a Vivid test kernel with a cherry pick of 37ef01ab to confirm it is in fact the fix. I'll post a link to the test kernel shortly. ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Medium = High -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1455852 Title: 15.04 will not boot on MacBook 2,1 Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: see: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2274999p=13286624#post13286624 Lubuntu 15.04 on refit grub dual boot macbook 2,1 linux-image-3.16 will boot, though sometimes hangs but, reboot will work eventually. I installed the packages as you directed, Joseph Salisbury. The grub entry was 3.19.0-17-generic. The boot stalled at the usual place. Having a look at this changelog: https://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v3.x/ChangeLog-3.19.7 Sounds a bit like the GPU hang and parser error in the kern.log snippet I posted originally. ... commit bb55569e6e1314a2df0108374c0f3c454b8f91af Author: Daniel Vetter daniel.vet...@ffwll.ch Date: Wed Apr 1 13:43:46 2015 +0200 drm/i915: Dont enable CS_PARSER_ERROR interrupts at all commit 37ef01ab5d24d1d520dc79f6a98099d451c2a901 upstream. From http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/?C=N;O=D v3.19.6-vivid stalls in the boot process and will not boot. The next one, v3.19.7-vivid, boots. Hope that helps. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1455852] Re: 15.04 will not boot on MacBook 2, 1
Bryan Cebuliak, the next step is to fully reverse commit bisect from kernel 3.19 to 4.1-rc3 in order to identify the last bad commit, followed immediately by the first good one. Once this commit has been identified, then it may be reviewed as a candidate for backporting into your release. Could you please do this following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection#How_do_I_reverse_bisect_the_upstream_kernel.3F ? Please note, finding adjacent kernel versions is not fully commit bisecting. Thank you for your understanding. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1455852] Re: 15.04 will not boot on MacBook 2, 1
Sorry, I mixed up kernel versions in my first comment above. Before 15.04, I used only the official kernel coming with the Ubuntu releases. So these were: Ubuntu | Kernel 14.04| 3.13 14.10| 3.16 15.04| 3.19 As written above, both kernels 3.13 and 3.16 had occasional hangs reporting the RTC and keyboard bus errors. I removed 3.13 kernel. Christopher M. Penalver, apport won't let me create a report with the mainline kernel (which boots fine). Should I boot with 3.16 to create the report? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1455852 Title: 15.04 will not boot on MacBook 2,1 Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: see: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2274999p=13286624#post13286624 Lubuntu 15.04 on refit grub dual boot macbook 2,1 linux-image-3.16 will boot, though sometimes hangs but, reboot will work eventually. Re: [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1455852] Re: 15.04 will not boot on MacBook 2, 1
No. 3.19.0-16-generic will not boot normally. In recovery mode it boots but with no mouse or keyboard function. My experience with recent kernels is the same as Nils'. The 3.16 kernels may take a few stalled boots hardware power key shutdowns and reboots to work. I think the 14.04 LTS kernels were ok and the original quetzal 12.10 ones were ok. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1455852] Re: 15.04 will not boot on MacBook 2, 1
Bryan Cebuliak, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available from the very top line at the top of the page (the release names are irrelevant for testing, and please do not test the daily folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. If the test did not allow you to test to the issue (ex. you couldn't boot into the OS) please make a comment in your report about this, and continue to test the next most recent kernel version until you can test to the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon, next to the word Tags, located at the bottom of the report description: kernel-fixed-upstream kernel-fixed-upstream-X.Y-rcZ Where XY and Z are numbers corresponding to the kernel version. If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags: kernel-bug-exists-upstream kernel-bug-exists-upstream-X.Y-rcZ Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding. ** Tags added: regression-release -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1455852 Title: 15.04 will not boot on MacBook 2,1 Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: see: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2274999p=13286624#post13286624 Lubuntu 15.04 on refit grub dual boot macbook 2,1 linux-image-3.16 will boot, though sometimes hangs but, reboot will work eventually. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1455852] Re: 15.04 will not boot on MacBook 2, 1
Hey Guys, I also experienced this bug and was unable to boot completely with 3.19 kernel. Thus I gave the current upstream linux kernel (4.1-rc2) a try and it works like a charm on every single boot. Couldn't be better. Some more background: I started with Lubuntu 14.10 (3.13 kernel) on my good old MacBook 2,1 (late 2007). Then followed the official release line to 15.04 (3.16 kernel). Both kernel versions occasionally crashed during boot. After rebooting ~5 times or so they worked :). Behaviour was always the same: On first boot, there was just a black screen. The following reboots showed error messages related to the RTC and keyboard bus (sorry, I don't remember exactly). Even on a successful boot, sometimes these messages were shown (not on every boot !?). With the current upstream kernel, those problems are completely past. If you want to try that and have VirtualBox installed, you need to uninstall that first (the DKMS part at least). Same is valid for other installed kernel modules. Otherwise the kernel will not boot. However, this is also stated in the ubuntu docs.
