[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1457936] Re: Network breaks in several minutess after upgrade to 3.13.0-53-generic

2015-05-25 Thread Henry Xing
Hi, Christopher M. Penalver

I just upgraded my r8168 driver to realtek's latest driver(8.040),
which could be downloaded from
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1PNid=13PFid=5Level=5Conn=4DownTypeID=3GetDown=false;.
And after this upgrade, my computer ran for nearly 2 hours and hasn't
met the network broken problem any more.

Regarding the r8168's driver in Ubuntu repository is 8.037, I think
it needs to be updated in Ubuntu's repository.

Therefore, I don't think it's necessary to try the upstream kernel
any more.

Please let me know if you have more concerns about this.

Thanks.

Henry

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1457936] Re: Network breaks in several minutess after upgrade to 3.13.0-53-generic

2015-05-23 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Henry Xing, could you please perform the requested action in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1457936/comments/4
(which included removing the previously mentioned module) and advise to
the results? What this will verify is if the stable upstream branch
kernel provides a working driver (necessary data point).

Henry Xing, where did you get the r8168 module from precisely? Was it
from a Ubuntu repository, built from source, etc.?

Description-en_CA: dkms source for the r8168 network driver
r8168 is the Linux device driver released for RealTek RTL8168B/8111B,
 RTL8168C/8111C, RTL8168CP/8111CP, RTL8168D/8111D, and RTL8168DP/8111DP,
and RTK8168E/8111E Gigabit Ethernet controllers with PCI-Express
 interface.
 .
This driver should only be used for devices not yet supported by the in-
kernel driver r8169. Please see the README.Debian for instructions how to
report bugs against r8169 that made it necessary to use r8168-dkms.
 .
Installation of the r8168-dkms package will disable the in-kernel r8169
module. To re-enable r8169, the r8168-dkms package must be purged.
 .
This package provides the dkms source code for the r8168 kernel modules.
Kernel source or headers are required to compile these modules.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1457936] Re: Network breaks in several minutess after upgrade to 3.13.0-53-generic

2015-05-22 Thread Dilton McGowan II
Henry Xing,

Back in January 2013 when I got this machine I was on Ubuntu 12. When 14
came out, the upgrade didn't work so hot so I wiped the disk and
installed stock Ubuntu 14. So whatever the installer chose is what I'm
running. In the 90s I built my own custom kernels but with so many
machines over the years I finally just started using default Ubuntu.

I ran sudo lspci -v and found that alx seems to be my driver:

04:00.0 Ethernet controller: Qualcomm Atheros AR8161 Gigabit Ethernet (rev 08)
Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device 2ad5
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 46
Memory at f710 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=256K]
I/O ports at d000 [size=128]
Capabilities: [40] Power Management version 3
Capabilities: [58] Express Endpoint, MSI 00
Capabilities: [c0] MSI: Enable+ Count=1/16 Maskable+ 64bit+
Capabilities: [d8] MSI-X: Enable- Count=16 Masked-
Capabilities: [100] Advanced Error Reporting
Capabilities: [180] Device Serial Number ff-f5-7d-8e-4c-72-b9-ff
Kernel driver in use: alx

Thanks,
Dilton

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1457936] Re: Network breaks in several minutess after upgrade to 3.13.0-53-generic

2015-05-22 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Henry Xing, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better.
Could you please test the latest upstream kernel available from the very
top line at the top of the page (the release names are irrelevant for
testing, and please do not test the daily folder) following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional
upstream developers to examine the issue.

If the test did not allow you to test to the issue (ex. you couldn't boot into
the OS) please make a comment in your report about this, and continue to test
the next most recent kernel version until you can test to the issue. Once
you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version
specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please
add the following tags by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil
icon, next to the word Tags, located at the bottom of the report description:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-X.Y-rcZ

Where XY and Z are numbers corresponding to the kernel version.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-X.Y-rcZ

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's
Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results.

Thank you for your understanding.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1457936] Re: Network breaks in several minutess after upgrade to 3.13.0-53-generic

2015-05-22 Thread Henry Xing
Hi, Christopher M. Penalver

To upstream image needs me to uninstall my network card's driver
module(r8168). If I do that, I can not verify if it's fixed or not.
