[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1503655] Re: Kernel bug in eventpoll_release_file+0x46/0xa0 with 3.13.0-66.107
@Tommy_CZ, Not sure what version number exactly you are looking at. Usually versions that only have "." in them might be the linux meta package. The bug was fixed by refreshing the linux-image binary package but without incrementing the ABI number. That way the linux meta package will not get updated but the binary should be replaced. As the automatic update previously stated the binary package would need to be 3.19.0-31.36 (note "-" before the abi number). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1503655 Title: Kernel bug in eventpoll_release_file+0x46/0xa0 with 3.13.0-66.107 Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Triaged Status in linux-lts-utopic package in Ubuntu: Invalid Status in linux source package in Trusty: Fix Released Status in linux-lts-utopic source package in Trusty: Fix Released Status in linux source package in Vivid: Fix Released Status in linux-lts-utopic source package in Vivid: Invalid Status in linux source package in Wily: Triaged Status in linux-lts-utopic source package in Wily: Invalid Bug description: With the latest kernel in trusty-proposed I seem to get panics on my X230 laptop: BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at fff8 IP: [] eventpoll_release_file+0x46/0xa0 PGD 1c11067 PUD 1c13067 PMD 0 Oops: [#1] SMP Modules linked in: snd_hrtimer ip6table_filter ip6_tables ebtable_nat ebt CPU: 1 PID: 1939 Comm: pulseaudio Not tainted 3.13.0-66-generic #107-Ubun Hardware name: LENOVO 2324CTO/2324CTO, BIOS G2ET94WW (2.54 ) 04/30/2013 task: 8800c2068000 ti: 8800c4826000 task.ti: 8800c4826000 RIP: 0010:[] [] eventpoll_release_fi RSP: 0018:8800c4827e78 EFLAGS: 00010286 RAX: RBX: ffb7 RCX: 000f RDX: 0100 RSI: RDI: 81c72e80 RBP: 8800c4827ea0 R08: R09: 0004 R10: 880210471e61 R11: 0206 R12: ffa8 R13: 880210471e61 R14: 8800c4bc6c00 R15: 8800c4acc8f0 FS: 7f3dbedd6740() GS:88021e24() knlGS:0 CS: 0010 DS: ES: CR0: 80050033 CR2: fff8 CR3: ce1da000 CR4: 001407e0 Stack: 8800c4acc840 0008 880210471e61 8800c4bc6c00 8800c4afdc00 8800c4827ee8 811c00aa 8800c2068000 81ebb680 8800c2068620 Call Trace: [] __fput+0x24a/0x260 [] fput+0xe/0x10 [] task_work_run+0xa7/0xe0 [] do_notify_resume+0x97/0xb0 [] int_signal+0x12/0x17 Code: 00 41 56 41 55 41 54 53 e8 68 37 52 00 49 8b 07 48 8b 08 49 39 c7 4 RIP [] eventpoll_release_file+0x46/0xa0 RSP CR2: fff8 ---[ end trace f2ee3b43ddaf4bd4 ]--- To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1503655/+subscriptions -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~kernel-packages Post to : kernel-packages@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~kernel-packages More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1503655] Re: Kernel bug in eventpoll_release_file+0x46/0xa0 with 3.13.0-66.107
This bug bit me also. Quite a rarity, I'd say. 3.19.0-31.35 low latency kernel from vivid-proposed. Agreed that caveat emptor because of enabling proposed repo. But I think this hang on log in may be a first? I was perplexed at first until I realised it must have been a bad kernel. Pressed ESC frantically on boot and selected previous kernel. I have a hunch that some users may enable proposed repo without knowing how to deal with the possible consequences. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1503655 Title: Kernel bug in eventpoll_release_file+0x46/0xa0 with 3.13.0-66.107 Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in linux-lts-utopic package in Ubuntu: Invalid Status in linux source package in Trusty: Fix Committed Status in linux-lts-utopic source package in Trusty: Fix Committed Status in linux source package in Vivid: Fix Committed Status in linux-lts-utopic source package in Vivid: Invalid Status in linux source package in Wily: Confirmed Status in linux-lts-utopic source package in Wily: Invalid Bug description: With the latest kernel in trusty-proposed I seem to get panics on my X230 laptop: BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at fff8 IP: [] eventpoll_release_file+0x46/0xa0 PGD 1c11067 PUD 1c13067 PMD 0 Oops: [#1] SMP Modules linked in: snd_hrtimer ip6table_filter ip6_tables ebtable_nat ebt CPU: 1 PID: 1939 Comm: pulseaudio Not tainted 3.13.0-66-generic #107-Ubun Hardware name: LENOVO 2324CTO/2324CTO, BIOS G2ET94WW (2.54 ) 04/30/2013 task: 8800c2068000 ti: 8800c4826000 task.ti: 8800c4826000 RIP: 0010:[] [] eventpoll_release_fi RSP: 0018:8800c4827e78 EFLAGS: 00010286 RAX: RBX: ffb7 RCX: 000f RDX: 0100 RSI: RDI: 81c72e80 RBP: 8800c4827ea0 R08: R09: 0004 R10: 880210471e61 R11: 0206 R12: ffa8 R13: 880210471e61 R14: 8800c4bc6c00 R15: 8800c4acc8f0 FS: 7f3dbedd6740() GS:88021e24() knlGS:0 CS: 0010 DS: ES: CR0: 80050033 CR2: fff8 CR3: ce1da000 CR4: 001407e0 Stack: 8800c4acc840 0008 880210471e61 8800c4bc6c00 8800c4afdc00 8800c4827ee8 811c00aa 8800c2068000 81ebb680 8800c2068620 Call Trace: [] __fput+0x24a/0x260 [] fput+0xe/0x10 [] task_work_run+0xa7/0xe0 [] do_notify_resume+0x97/0xb0 [] int_signal+0x12/0x17 Code: 00 41 56 41 55 41 54 53 e8 68 37 52 00 49 8b 07 48 8b 08 49 39 c7 4 RIP [] eventpoll_release_file+0x46/0xa0 RSP CR2: fff8 ---[ end trace f2ee3b43ddaf4bd4 ]--- To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1503655/+subscriptions -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~kernel-packages Post to : kernel-packages@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~kernel-packages More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

The latter is indeed true. But (1) all users don't know that, and (2) people do not always do as they are recommended. So yes, it's true in a sense that those affected have themselves to blame. But IMO that's not a reason to belittle the significance of the incident. Quite a few users out there are stuck because they used Update Manager to keep their systems up to date. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1503655 Title: Kernel bug in eventpoll_release_file+0x46/0xa0 with 3.13.0-66.107 Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in linux-lts-utopic package in Ubuntu: Invalid Status in linux source package in Trusty: Fix Committed Status in linux-lts-utopic source package in Trusty: Fix Committed Status in linux source package in Vivid: Fix Committed Status in linux-lts-utopic source package in Vivid: Invalid Status in linux source package in Wily: Confirmed Status in linux-lts-utopic source package in Wily: Invalid Bug description: With the latest kernel in trusty-proposed I seem to get panics on my X230 laptop: BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at fff8 IP: [] eventpoll_release_file+0x46/0xa0 PGD 1c11067 PUD 1c13067 PMD 0 Oops: [#1] SMP Modules linked in: snd_hrtimer ip6table_filter ip6_tables ebtable_nat ebt CPU: 1 PID: 1939 Comm: pulseaudio Not tainted 3.13.0-66-generic #107-Ubun Hardware name: LENOVO 2324CTO/2324CTO, BIOS G2ET94WW (2.54 ) 04/30/2013 task: 8800c2068000 ti: 8800c4826000 task.ti: 8800c4826000 RIP: 0010:[] [] eventpoll_release_fi RSP: 0018:8800c4827e78 EFLAGS: 00010286 RAX: RBX: ffb7 RCX: 000f RDX: 0100 RSI: RDI: 81c72e80 RBP: 8800c4827ea0 R08: R09: 0004 R10: 880210471e61 R11: 0206 R12: ffa8 R13: 880210471e61 R14: 8800c4bc6c00 R15: 8800c4acc8f0 FS: 7f3dbedd6740() GS:88021e24() knlGS:0 CS: 0010 DS: ES: CR0: 80050033 CR2: fff8 CR3: ce1da000 CR4: 001407e0 Stack: 8800c4acc840 0008 880210471e61 8800c4bc6c00 8800c4afdc00 8800c4827ee8 811c00aa 8800c2068000 81ebb680 8800c2068620 Call Trace: [] __fput+0x24a/0x260 [] fput+0xe/0x10 [] task_work_run+0xa7/0xe0 [] do_notify_resume+0x97/0xb0 [] int_signal+0x12/0x17 Code: 00 41 56 41 55 41 54 53 e8 68 37 52 00 49 8b 07 48 8b 08 49 39 c7 4 RIP [] eventpoll_release_file+0x46/0xa0 RSP CR2: fff8 ---[ end trace f2ee3b43ddaf4bd4 ]--- To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1503655/+subscriptions -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~kernel-packages Post to : kernel-packages@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~kernel-packages More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1503655] Re: Kernel bug in eventpoll_release_file+0x46/0xa0 with 3.13.0-66.107
in reply to #13: I am running Trusty on a no-name desktop. This morning kernel 3.13.0-66-generic appeared on the list of updates. I have *not* activated any "proposed" or non-standard repository. As I am a fair-to-middling level user I managed to boot to a previous version of the kernel, and removed the faulty version. Checking a few hours later 3.13.0-66-generic no longer appears as an update. Hopefully it has been recalled until a fix is made available. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1503655 Title: Kernel bug in eventpoll_release_file+0x46/0xa0 with 3.13.0-66.107 Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in linux-lts-utopic package in Ubuntu: Invalid Status in linux source package in Trusty: Fix Committed Status in linux-lts-utopic source package in Trusty: Fix Committed Status in linux source package in Vivid: Fix Committed Status in linux-lts-utopic source package in Vivid: Invalid Status in linux source package in Wily: Confirmed Status in linux-lts-utopic source package in Wily: Invalid Bug description: With the latest kernel in trusty-proposed I seem to get panics on my X230 laptop: BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at fff8 IP: [] eventpoll_release_file+0x46/0xa0 PGD 1c11067 PUD 1c13067 PMD 0 Oops: [#1] SMP Modules linked in: snd_hrtimer ip6table_filter ip6_tables ebtable_nat ebt CPU: 1 PID: 1939 Comm: pulseaudio Not tainted 3.13.0-66-generic #107-Ubun Hardware name: LENOVO 2324CTO/2324CTO, BIOS G2ET94WW (2.54 ) 04/30/2013 task: 8800c2068000 ti: 8800c4826000 task.ti: 8800c4826000 RIP: 0010:[] [] eventpoll_release_fi RSP: 0018:8800c4827e78 EFLAGS: 00010286 RAX: RBX: ffb7 RCX: 000f RDX: 0100 RSI: RDI: 81c72e80 RBP: 8800c4827ea0 R08: R09: 0004 R10: 880210471e61 R11: 0206 R12: ffa8 R13: 880210471e61 R14: 8800c4bc6c00 R15: 8800c4acc8f0 FS: 7f3dbedd6740() GS:88021e24() knlGS:0 CS: 0010 DS: ES: CR0: 80050033 CR2: fff8 CR3: ce1da000 CR4: 001407e0 Stack: 8800c4acc840 0008 880210471e61 8800c4bc6c00 8800c4afdc00 8800c4827ee8 811c00aa 8800c2068000 81ebb680 8800c2068620 Call Trace: [] __fput+0x24a/0x260 [] fput+0xe/0x10 [] task_work_run+0xa7/0xe0 [] do_notify_resume+0x97/0xb0 [] int_signal+0x12/0x17 Code: 00 41 56 41 55 41 54 53 e8 68 37 52 00 49 8b 07 48 8b 08 49 39 c7 4 RIP [] eventpoll_release_file+0x46/0xa0 RSP CR2: fff8 ---[ end trace f2ee3b43ddaf4bd4 ]--- To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1503655/+subscriptions -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~kernel-packages Post to : kernel-packages@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~kernel-packages More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

A thought: A consequence of this buggy kernel upload is that many 'non-expert users' now have seemingly useless systems, and are unable to resolve the problem themselves. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1503655] Re: Kernel bug in eventpoll_release_file+0x46/0xa0 with 3.13.0-66.107
The kernel update that was issued today -- 3.13.0-66 -- killed my computer. Fortunately I was able to go back to the prior one -- 3.13.0-65. When restarting after the install and just after logging in, a system error box came up, but all I could do was a hard shutdown. After two times, I reverted to the prior kernel with no problems. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1503655 Title: Kernel bug in eventpoll_release_file+0x46/0xa0 with 3.13.0-66.107 Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in linux-lts-utopic package in Ubuntu: Invalid Status in linux source package in Trusty: Fix Committed Status in linux-lts-utopic source package in Trusty: Fix Committed Status in linux source package in Vivid: Fix Committed Status in linux-lts-utopic source package in Vivid: Invalid Status in linux source package in Wily: Confirmed Status in linux-lts-utopic source package in Wily: Invalid Bug description: With the latest kernel in trusty-proposed I seem to get panics on my X230 laptop: BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at fff8 IP: [] eventpoll_release_file+0x46/0xa0 PGD 1c11067 PUD 1c13067 PMD 0 Oops: [#1] SMP Modules linked in: snd_hrtimer ip6table_filter ip6_tables ebtable_nat ebt CPU: 1 PID: 1939 Comm: pulseaudio Not tainted 3.13.0-66-generic #107-Ubun Hardware name: LENOVO 2324CTO/2324CTO, BIOS G2ET94WW (2.54 ) 04/30/2013 task: 8800c2068000 ti: 8800c4826000 task.ti: 8800c4826000 RIP: 0010:[] [] eventpoll_release_fi RSP: 0018:8800c4827e78 EFLAGS: 00010286 RAX: RBX: ffb7 RCX: 000f RDX: 0100 RSI: RDI: 81c72e80 RBP: 8800c4827ea0 R08: R09: 0004 R10: 880210471e61 R11: 0206 R12: ffa8 R13: 880210471e61 R14: 8800c4bc6c00 R15: 8800c4acc8f0 FS: 7f3dbedd6740() GS:88021e24() knlGS:0 CS: 0010 DS: ES: CR0: 80050033 CR2: fff8 CR3: ce1da000 CR4: 001407e0 Stack: 8800c4acc840 0008 880210471e61 8800c4bc6c00 8800c4afdc00 8800c4827ee8 811c00aa 8800c2068000 81ebb680 8800c2068620 Call Trace: [] __fput+0x24a/0x260 [] fput+0xe/0x10 [] task_work_run+0xa7/0xe0 [] do_notify_resume+0x97/0xb0 [] int_signal+0x12/0x17 Code: 00 41 56 41 55 41 54 53 e8 68 37 52 00 49 8b 07 48 8b 08 49 39 c7 4 RIP [] eventpoll_release_file+0x46/0xa0 RSP CR2: fff8 ---[ end trace f2ee3b43ddaf4bd4 ]--- To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1503655/+subscriptions -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~kernel-packages Post to : kernel-packages@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~kernel-packages More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1503655] Re: Kernel bug in eventpoll_release_file+0x46/0xa0 with 3.13.0-66.107
Gunnar said: A consequence of this buggy kernel upload is that many 'non-expert users' now have seemingly useless systems, and are unable to resolve the problem themselves. Please note that non expert users should not activate proposed repository. I am having the same problem with Vivid (15.04) and kernel 3.19.0.31. Starting on the previous kernel (3.19.0.30) fixed temporarily the problem. Best regards. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1503655] Re: Kernel bug in eventpoll_release_file+0x46/0xa0 with 3.13.0-66.107
I'm having this issue on Wily today - Occurs on Wily kernel 4.2.0-15 but not on 4.2.0-14 for me. Bug #1503738 mentions this bug # as a duplicate, but while it probably is the exact same issue, it's on a very different kernel/distro version for me. Please let me know if the fix is automatically handled across all supported Ubuntu kernels, or if I need to submit info to the other bug.. For some reason, i was unable to login at all (lightdm AND shell) with this kernel. With normal user, Lightdm got stuck in checking the password until i pressed ESC. Guest session was giving error about being unable to start the session Shell login got stuck for a minute checking password and then asked the username again. I had to revert to the previous kernel 3.13.0-65.106 to be able to login again. I also can find the same trace in my logs. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1503655 Title: Kernel bug in eventpoll_release_file+0x46/0xa0 with 3.13.0-66.107 Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: With the latest kernel in trusty-proposed I seem to get panics on my X230 laptop: BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at fff8 IP: [] eventpoll_release_file+0x46/0xa0 PGD 1c11067 PUD 1c13067 PMD 0 Oops: [#1] SMP Modules linked in: snd_hrtimer ip6table_filter ip6_tables ebtable_nat ebt CPU: 1 PID: 1939 Comm: pulseaudio Not tainted 3.13.0-66-generic #107-Ubun Hardware name: LENOVO 2324CTO/2324CTO, BIOS G2ET94WW (2.54 ) 04/30/2013 task: 8800c2068000 ti: 8800c4826000 task.ti: 8800c4826000 RIP: 0010:[] [] eventpoll_release_fi RSP: 0018:8800c4827e78 EFLAGS: 00010286 RAX: RBX: ffb7 RCX: 000f RDX: 0100 RSI: RDI: 81c72e80 RBP: 8800c4827ea0 R08: R09: 0004 R10: 880210471e61 R11: 0206 R12: ffa8 R13: 880210471e61 R14: 8800c4bc6c00 R15: 8800c4acc8f0 FS: 7f3dbedd6740() GS:88021e24() knlGS:0 CS: 0010 DS: ES: CR0: 80050033 CR2: fff8 CR3: ce1da000 CR4: 001407e0 Stack: 8800c4acc840 0008 880210471e61 8800c4bc6c00 8800c4afdc00 8800c4827ee8 811c00aa 8800c2068000 81ebb680 8800c2068620 Call Trace: [] __fput+0x24a/0x260 [] fput+0xe/0x10 [] task_work_run+0xa7/0xe0 [] do_notify_resume+0x97/0xb0 [] int_signal+0x12/0x17 Code: 00 41 56 41 55 41 54 53 e8 68 37 52 00 49 8b 07 48 8b 08 49 39 c7 4 RIP [] eventpoll_release_file+0x46/0xa0 RSP CR2: fff8 ---[ end trace f2ee3b43ddaf4bd4 ]--- To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1503655/+subscriptions -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~kernel-packages Post to : kernel-packages@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~kernel-packages More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
