I have done irqpoll in the past, and it didn't help. I will try again with 4.10.10. I'll take another look at the mainline kernels. I will say one of the recent kernel apt-get updates (4.4.0-4[35]) seems not to have this problem as frequently. Noticed this happening since upgrading to 16.04. But, I also started using a usb mouse on this particular computer around the same time. I'll give the upstream kernels a try and report back.
