I'm experiencing this intermittently on a Lenovo ThinkPad T470; I'm currently running 4.12.0-041200-generic, and it has been patchy throughout the 4.12.0-rcX series. I'm having a similar issue with a Dell XPS 13 9360. I'm running Gentoo and kernel 4.9.0. COLD booting the laptop fixed it. I spoke too soon. Sound was working the first time I switched from 4.9 to 4.4, though volume couldn't be changed in the UI. However, after I rebooted again (4.4 -> 4.4) I never got sound to work again. I went back to 4.4.0 - sound works. Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a prior kernel version where you were not having this particular problem? Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.9 kernel[0].
