[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1679898] Re: [Hyper-V] Ubuntu VM crash during Hyper-V backup or live migration after installing kernel 4.4.0-67 or later

2017-04-11 Thread John Smith
I use System Center Data Protection Manager 2012 R2 for a backup.

I confirm that removing the virtual DVD drive solves the problem with
backup and live migration.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1679898] Re: [Hyper-V] Ubuntu VM crash during Hyper-V backup or live migration after installing kernel 4.4.0-67 or later

2017-04-10 Thread Aleksey
Guess the same problem here.
Hypervisor: Windows Server 2012 R2 and Windows 10
Guest: Gen2 Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS fresh install

With any kernel from 4.4.0-21 to 4.4.0-66 everything works fine. Update
to 4.4.0-67 - 72 and machines crash with out-of-memory if I make
SAVE/RESTORE VM or live migrate it.

Your virtual DVD reference gave me a hint. I removed DVD from the VM and
tried SAVE/RESTORE again with a 4.4.0-72 kernel - and it WORKED!!!

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1679898] Re: [Hyper-V] Ubuntu VM crash during Hyper-V backup or live migration after installing kernel 4.4.0-67 or later

2017-04-08 Thread Steven Delombaerde
Hello

I have this problem too. I am running kernel 4.4.0-72-generic with up to date
packages.
The symptoms are exactly as Deon described in the attached document.

This is very critical as block level backup on Hyper-V seems to be
impossible, also disrupting backup of all other Hyper-V machines like
Windows ...

Please advise.
Steven

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1679898] Re: [Hyper-V] Ubuntu VM crash during Hyper-V backup or live migration after installing kernel 4.4.0-67 or later

2017-04-07 Thread Joseph Salisbury
I built a v2 version of the test kernel.

The test kernel can be downloaded from:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~jsalisbury/lp1679898/

Can you test this kernel and see if it resolves this bug?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1679898] Re: [Hyper-V] Ubuntu VM crash during Hyper-V backup or live migration after installing kernel 4.4.0-67 or later

2017-04-05 Thread Joseph Salisbury
I built a test kernel from the Xenial master-next branch, which includes
the following commit:

f1c635b439a5c01776fe3a25b1e2dc546ea82e6f
Author: Stephen Hemminger
Date: Tue Mar 7 09:15:53 2017 -0800

scsi: storvsc: Workaround for virtual DVD SCSI version

The test kernel can be downloaded from:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~jsalisbury/lp1679898/

Can you test this kernel and see if it resolves this bug?

Hi, after installing kernel 4.4.0-67 or later I cannot backup my Ubuntu VM's
on Hyper-V.
  Microsoft Hyper-v 2012r2 Gen2 VMs

See Attachment for what happens is immediately after backup starts I
  get an error.

Eventually the kernel reports it has run out of memory and the machine
just continuously scrolls errors message related to page allocation.

When reseting the virtual machine no logs can be found of the problem.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1679898] Re: [Hyper-V] Ubuntu VM crash during Hyper-V backup or live migration after installing kernel 4.4.0-67 or later

2017-04-05 Thread Joshua R. Poulson
I think this issue is with this set of storvsc changes in .67:

  * [Hyper-V] Bug fixes for storvsc (tagged queuing, error conditions)
(LP: #1663687)
- scsi: storvsc: Enable tracking of queue depth
- scsi: storvsc: Remove the restriction on max segment size
- scsi: storvsc: Enable multi-queue support
- scsi: storvsc: use tagged SRB requests if supported by the device
- scsi: storvsc: properly handle SRB_ERROR when sense message is present
- scsi: storvsc: properly set residual data length on errors

We know of a regression with the last patch in this list and it is fixed
with this upstream commit:

commit f1c635b439a5c01776fe3a25b1e2dc546ea82e6f
Author: Stephen Hemminger
Date: Tue Mar 7 09:15:53 2017 -0800

scsi: storvsc: Workaround for virtual DVD SCSI version

Hyper-V host emulation of SCSI for virtual DVD device reports SCSI
version 0 (UNKNOWN) but is still capable of supporting REPORTLUN.

Without this patch, a GEN2 Linux guest on Hyper-V will not boot 4.11
successfully with virtual DVD ROM device. What happens is that the SCSI
scan process falls back to doing sequential probing by INQUIRY. But the
storvsc driver has a previous workaround that masks/blocks all errors
reports from INQUIRY (or MODE_SENSE) commands. This workaround causes
the scan to then populate a full set of bogus LUN's on the target and
then sends kernel spinning off into a death spiral doing block reads on
the non-existent LUNs.

By setting the correct blacklist flags, the target with the DVD device
is scanned with REPORTLUN and that works correctly.

Patch needs to go in current 4.11, it is safe but not necessary in older
kernels.
