[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1987040] Re: [i915] Max resolution for FullHD monitor is 1024x768

2022-08-21 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Yes my concern about VGA is the same if it's still VGA at either end.

I don't know if EDID retrieval is meant to work on analog VGA
connections, but in recent years there has been a slow trickle of bug
reports about this.

I think either:

 (a) Windows has a "driver" (.inf file) for the monitor already that
defines the graphics modes for the monitor without the OS having to
auto-detect it; or

 (b) The Linux kernel is not as good at auto-detecting over analog VGA
as Windows is.

** Summary changed:

- [i915] Max resolution for FullHD monitor is 1024x768
+ [i915] Max resolution for FullHD monitor over VGA is 1024x768

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1987040] Re: [i915] Max resolution for FullHD monitor is 1024x768

2022-08-19 Thread Jesus H
Hi Daniel, well first of all I sent this bug because I saw the option and I
just checked.
Thougth it was something automatic and anyone would reply, so instead thanks to
you!

After you mentioned, I just realized my laptop has an miniDP connector.
My monitor doesnt have DisplayPort, so I used an VGA<->miniDP adapter, a friend
had a unit of exactly this item https://www.ebay.es/itm/353392052156
It didnt work. My laptop screen went black and nothing in the monitor (made
sure to select VGA input).
(Im not sure if your concern about VGA still affects here, as the output port
is miniDP, but still is VGA in the other end)

I just made sure that I can connect through VGA well and with FullHD, in a
Windows 10 partition in this same laptop, so just discarded the option the VGA
port itself is bad.
I dont understand why Linux and graphics is so hard!

Thanks a lot for your time, highly appreciated.
