[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1990178] Re: Seemingly random (ACPI-related?) blocked tasks in the kernel causing a variety of symptoms
** Attachment added: "dmesg from a boot which works fine" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1990178/+attachment/5617177/+files/dmesg-5.15.0-47-generic-working.txt -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1990178 Title: Seemingly random (ACPI-related?) blocked tasks in the kernel causing a variety of symptoms Status in linux package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: I'm running Ubuntu MATE 22.04.1 LTS on a ASUS Vivobook S14 (model number M3402QA) laptop. When I boot Ubuntu on my laptop, there is a high probability (I guess somewhere between 80-90%) that the system "won't work properly." And by that I mean the following symptoms: - The boot process is slow. It takes quite a while (tens of seconds) until the GUI starts and the login screen is visible, and after logging in, it takes a similar amount of time until the desktop appears and can be used. - Several features are not available. I cannot connect to a WiFi network because NetworkManager is not running (properly). I cannot check the state of charge of my laptop battery (presumably because UPower is hanging). I cannot control the brightness of the screen or of the keyboard backlight using the shortcuts on the built-in keyboard. Closing or opening the lid is not detected, and will not suspend the computer. - After four minutes, several messages appear in dmesg reporting blocked tasks in the kernel. The backtraces for most affected tasks refers to functions with "acpi" in their name, which is why I suspect this problem is related to ACPI. - I cannot reboot or power off the machine without using SysRq combinations (presumably because the blocked tasks cannot be killed properly). Interestingly, this does not happen all of the time. If I keep restarting the machine (via SysRq), it might eventually boot up quickly and all the things mentioned above will work fine. I wasn't able to figure out the cause of these problems. I'm attaching the output of `dmesg` from both a boot which exhibits the aforementioned problems, and from a boot which works fine. Note that the data collected by apport is from a properly working boot (otherwise I would not be able to connect to the network to submit the report). If you need more information, just let me know.
