Hello, I've been trying to update BIOS following the guidelines in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DellBIOS and downloading the A05 version from http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriverDetails/Product/inspiron-15z-5523?driverId=DHP19osCode=W832fileId=3203661923languageCode=encategoryId=BI but none worked, it seems that the DOS emulator cannot load the exe file (for instance dosemu gives ERROR: EMU86: error 94). After a fresh install of Saucy (Daily Build version) the touchpad is working by default, without need of enabling it via the Fn key. I'm actually using 3.11.0-8-generic, and have been testing it for some hours and seems fine. The touchpad works with al functions enabled (also two-finger scroll). It only happened once that deactivating the touchpad using the Fn key, I was not able to reenable it again. It worked again by default after reboot. I will let you know if the fix is stable in the next days. After two days of testing Saucy with 3.11.0-8 kernel the behaviour is the following: Sometimes the touchpad works properly by default after a fresh boot. In this case it works coninuatively for hours (possibly it works permanently). Sometimes the touchpad does not work by default after a fresh boot (is completely inactive). In this case the touchpad is disabled, and it doesn't even activate with the relative Fn key. Actually the touchpad now works also with the old kernel 3.5.0-40, on 12.04 (where the broadcom card works properly). I just have to enable the touchpad with the FN key. I don't know exactly what was that fixed it. I suppose that it may be due to the BIOS update, or it may bbe a combination of the steps I've done: first I updated the BIOS to A05. The touchpad seemed to be still not working with kernel 3.5.0-40 (and with 3.8 for 13.04). Then I installed the upstream kernel v3.11. And the touchpad started working with that version of the kernel (both in 12.04 and 13.04, but the broadcom wifi card stopped working). I tried again kernel 3.5.0-40 on 12.04 and the touchpad works (after enabling with FN key, and the wifi card works too) Should I change the status in fixed? Yes, in Precise, after a cold boot, the touchpad works only after enabling it by Fn key. But I must add that it is unstable. After a while, the touchpad stops working, and it is not possible to re-enable it by Fn key. The situation now is this: The touhcpad works only sometimes, by enabling via Fn key. The Fn key related to the touchpad (Fn+F3) itself works only sometimes. This behaviour seems to be the same in all distributions I've tested, and for all kernels (12.04 with 3.5 kernel and with 3.11 (upstream), 13.04 with 3.8 and 3.11) I've tested also the live version of Saucy via http://cdimage.ubuntu.com /daily-live/current/ on usb and the touchpad didn't work (I suspect it has the same behaviour of the other distros). Precise has been the first release I installed on this machine. The touchpad never worked properly. Before updating the recent BIOS upgrade (and also kernel upgrade), the touchpad didn't work at all, even pushing the FN key (it didn't activate at all).
